A three-year starter at Kansas (2008-11), established career averages of 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 109 games. Finished his career 25th on the all-time KU scoring list (1,371 points), 16th all-time in rebounds (676), ninth in double-doubles (19) and 12th on the single-season scoring list (654 points in 2010-11). Selected the Big 12 Player of the Year and the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player following a standout junior season in which he averaged a team-best 17.2 points and 7.6 rebounds while finishing second in the Big 12 Conference in shooting percentage (57.0%, ranked 21st nationally). Was a Wooden Award Finalist and an Oscar Robertson Trophy finalist in 2010-11. Added First-Team All-Big 12 accolades, as well as USBWA, NABC and AP All-America Second Team honors. As a sophomore, was chosen the 2009-10 Yahoo! Sports Most Improved Player and was selected to the Big 12 All-Improved Team by the media. Named All-Big 12 Second Team by the coaches in 2009-10. In 2008-09, was a Big 12 All-Rookie Team selection after starting 22 games as a freshman, and also led the Big 12 freshmen class in rebounding (4.7).
Born Marcus Morris in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mother is Thomasine “Angel” Morris. Has four brothers; Donte, Blake, David and twin, Markieff, of the Los Angeles Lakers. Seven minutes younger than his fraternal twin brother, who was drafted just minutes before him in 2011 NBA Draft. Nickname is “Mook”. Majored in American Studies at KU. Voted “Most Likely to Succeed” in high school. Averaged 24.8 points and eight rebounds in 2007-08 for APEX Academy (Pennsauken, NJ).
Prior to APEX, led the Prep Charter High School Eagles to back-to-back State titles in 2006 and 2007. Grew up a fan of the hometown Philadelphia Eagles and was frequently at odds with brother Markieff, who is a supporter of the Dallas Cowboys. Favorite movies of all-time are “The 6th Man”, “Good Burger” and “Taken”. Favorite vacation destination is the Dominican Republic. Favorite video game is “Madden”. Would have pursued being a video game creator or football player if not in the NBA.
Held a special bond with his late grandmother, Shirley, who passed away due to cancer in 2013. After the Morris’ childhood home was destroyed by a fire, the family moved in with Shirley. Shirley came up with Marcus and Markieff’s nicknames (Mook and Keef). Along with Markieff allowed fans to vote on Twitter to decide which new tattoo the twins would get in the summer of 2014; the fans and brothers decided on a tattoo of a ribbon honoring their late grandmother. The twins have another tattoo of her name on their right wrists that they kiss during the national anthem before each game. He and Markieff have mostly identical tattoos. He and Markieff have the words “Family Over Everything” tattooed on their left biceps and include “FOE” at the end of most tweets.
