4. CAN I GET AN ENCORE?

Kyrie Irving just had one of the greatest game-winning shots you’ll ever see in your life.

Victor Wembanyama just put together a historic game the NBA has never seen over the past 50 seasons.

What do they have in store for us next?

  • Find out tonight, as Wemby and the Spurs host Kyrie and the Mavericks (8 ET, NBA App)

Kyrie’s peers have constantly raved about his skill level, with Sunday’s game-winner as the latest example of him being one of the most skilled players the game has ever seen.

From ballhandling, to finishing around the basket, to unlimited creativity and shot-making ability, Irving’s game is inimitable.

Irving with a live dribble is like a chess master plotting a series of moves that will soon result in a checkmate. Whether he goes past you, around you or under you, Irving will get to his spot and has an array of shots from every possible angle to finish.

Wemby possesses a unique skill set of his own, particularly for a player of his stature. How many 7-foot-4 players have we ever seen hit a behind-the-back crossover dribble into a step-back 3 with the fluidity of a player a foot shorter?

Or drop a perfectly placed no-look bounce pass in traffic?

Or possess the quickness to beat a point guard off the dribble and finish the and-1 in the lane?

Who will add to their highlight reel on Tuesday night?

5. THREE TEAMS, ONE NO. 1 SEED

With 26 days remaining in the regular season, the top of the West is still up for grabs with the top three teams – the Thunder (47-20), Wolves (47-21) and Nuggets (47-21) – separated by just a half-game.

  • While every game down the stretch will be vital for all three teams, there are three that must be circled on the calendar, starting tonight when the Timberwolves host the Nuggets  (9 ET, NBA TV)
  • It’s the first of three head-to-head matchups between the Wolves and Nuggets over the next three weeks that will not only determine the head-to-head tiebreaker, but can provide some separation in a race that has been razor thin for the past month

Tiebreaker status: The primary tiebreaker is always head-to-head record. When that’s not possible, the next is Division leader. However, with OKC, Denver and Minnesota all in the Northwest Division, there may be no clear-cut winner and division win percentage would be the next tiebreaker.

Here’s how things stand entering tonight’s matchup:

Oklahoma City

  • Won 3-1 vs. DEN
  • Tied 2-2 vs. MIN
  • Division: 11-4 (.733, 1 game to play)

Minnesota

  • Tied 2-2 vs. OKC
  • Lead 1-0 vs. DEN (3 to play)
  • Division: 11-2 (.846, 3 to play)

Denver

  • Lost 1-3 vs. OKC
  • Trail 0-1 vs. MIN (3 to play)
  • Division: 6-5 (.545, 5 to play)

Why is this so important? With so many teams fighting to secure a top-six finish for a guaranteed playoff spot, these three teams are all on track to not just qualify, but likely have home-court advantage in the first round.

But this goes beyond the opening round. All three teams have aspirations for a Finals run, and securing the No.1 seed makes a huge impact.

In the last 10 years, the No. 1 seed in the West made the Finals seven times, and won the championship five times.

  • Denver: No. 1 seed in 2022-23 and won the Finals
  • Minnesota: No. 1 seed in 2003-04 and eliminated in the West Finals (deepest playoff run in franchise history)
  • OKC: No. 1 seed in 2012-13 and lost in the West Semifinals; No. 1 in 1995-96 (as the Sonics) and lost in NBA Finals; No. 1 in 1993-94 and lost in the first round

Among the three teams, Denver has the largest disparity in home vs. road success.

  • Denver: 27-6 (2nd in NBA) at home; 20-15 (8th in NBA) on the road
  • Minnesota: 23-8 (5th) at home; 24-13 (2nd) on road
  • OKC: 27-7 (Tied 3rd) at home; 20-13 (5th) on road

Buckle up because this race has a chance to go down as one of the closest in NBA history.

  • The closest the top three teams in the West have ever finished to each other is one game, in 1997-98, 2002-03, and 2007-08
