John Collins exits Hawks-Celtics with back contusion

Between injuries and suspensions, the Hawks have barely glimpsed Trae Young and John Collins on the floor together this season.

That setback resurfaced on Friday night when Collins landed hard on his back after contesting Jayson Tatum’s dunk attempt. The third-year big man immediately reached in pain to his lower back and ultimately left the court. He was later diagnosed with a back contusion and did not return.

Collins, who served a 25-game suspension earlier this season for violating the league’s anti-drug policy, is averaging 18.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals over nine games. He and Young have played just 122 total minutes together in 2019-20, and the Hawks have outscored their opponents by five in that time.
