Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets partnered with Food Bank for New York City to host a mobile food pantry on the arena’s plaza on Friday, April 24. Amid the current public health crisis, the “new normal” of social distancing, shuttered businesses and lost wages has led to thousands more New Yorkers facing hunger. According to a poll recently published by The New York Times, half of New York City residents are concerned about how they will afford food as this crisis continues, while approximately 40% of soup kitchens and food pantries across the city have closed.

To help ensure those impacted will continue to have access to much-needed meals, Food Bank employees and volunteers distributed food and essentials to hundreds of families. In addition to providing fresh food, produce and household supplies, NBA Math Hoops board games were distributed to families, with support from the Brooklyn Nets. Math Hoops is a board game that aims to engage students in math and social-emotional learning through the game of basketball.

In a time where it has become paramount to stay where you are, Dzanan Musa is a long way from home. But with the NBA season suspended during a global crisis, Brooklyn’s second-year swingman is committed to supporting his hometown of Bihac in Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina.

Musa has purchased and donated crucial medical equipment to his hometown hospital that will support their efforts to care for COVID-19 patients.

“I just saw on the internet that everybody’s worried that they don’t have medical supplies and I called the hospital and asked, ‘Do you need anything from me?”

The need was for monitors that help track a patient’s condition, but they were not available in Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina. Musa tracked down a pair in Serbia and had them delivered on Friday.

“They will help the people in bad conditions, it will keep them alive and give them hope to live,” said Musa. “Those two machines are the first ones in Bosnia to ever come over there. The people there didn’t have those kind of machines, so I’m really happy I helped them get these.”

Musa’s brother Dzennis, who had joined him in the U.S. during Dzanan’s rookie season, is back home in Bihac. He helped facilitate the purchase of the equipment and delivered it to the hospital personally.

The National Basketball Players Association also contributed to the purchase, and Musa thanked the NBPA’s international liaison Ivan Maggi and executive director Michelle Roberts for their help.

In the month since the Nets last played, Musa has been staying in touch with teammates as well as family back home. He’s navigating the downtime with weights and stationary bike workouts in his apartment. When he wants to dribble a basketball, he goes up on his building’s rooftop. “I think the Brooklyn organization is a great organization,” said Musa. “They keep us together through Face Time workouts. I think that’s unique in the NBA, to have those relationships with GMs and Jacque (Vaughn). All the staff is calling us every day. Tiago Splitter is sending me clips every day of players I want to study like Manu Ginobili. It’s pretty nice that you feel like you're family.”

Hourly employees at Barclays Center are the bedrock of the fan experience in the arena. Whether it's a big smile as fans enter the building or keeping the seats clean or making sure the concession stands are stocked with your favorite items, they are on the frontlines to make our fans feel special. They keep the lights on and the house clean, and they are the first ones to arrive and last ones to leave the building.

While all of us are negatively affected by suspension of the NBA season and a state-wide ban on events with 500 people or more, we are especially aware of the difficulties faced by our hourly employees. When games and events are cancelled or postponed, work stops and so do paychecks.

With the aim of helping Barclays Center staff get through this difficult time, we commit to provide relief to hourly employees for the paychecks they would have earned if Brooklyn Nets regular season games and non-Nets events at Barclays Center were to continue as originally scheduled. The plan will cover the period from now until the end of May unless the events are rescheduled before that. We will work closely and expeditiously with our partners, including service contractors, event promoters and unions to implement this plan.

It is our goal to alleviate the hit to household cash flow from work stoppage for people impacted so they can pay for necessary expenses such as rent, utilities, food and daily necessities. We want to let our Barclays Center staff know that nobody is left behind and we are in this together.
