Congratulations to&nbsp;School on Wheels!&nbsp;on winning the Lakers Youth Foundation&nbsp;November 2023&nbsp;YOU Grant Contest!&nbsp;&nbsp;

Since 1993, the mission of School on Wheels has never wavered: to enhance educational opportunities for children experiencing homelessness from kindergarten through twelfth grade throughout Southern California.&nbsp;

This project aims to provide students experiencing homelessness, attending&nbsp;our&nbsp;Skid Row Learning Center, with enriching and educational experiences during the summer months. The project aspires to bridge the gap between their opportunities and those of their peers by offering weekly curricula and engaging field trips to museums, science centers, and other educational institutions.&nbsp;Ultimately, we hope&nbsp;to empower students experiencing homelessness with a holistic and enriching educational experience, fostering a love for&nbsp;learning&nbsp;and providing them with opportunities for personal and academic growth.

Congratulations to&nbsp;Walk With Sally&nbsp;on winning the Lakers Youth Foundation&nbsp;March 2023&nbsp;YOU Grant Contest!&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mission Statement:&nbsp;Walk With Sally is dedicated to lessening the burden of cancer for children and families by providing critical programs and services by way of; mentorship, mental health support, art healing and financial empowerment.

Funding Project:&nbsp;Walk with Sally is hosting a “Here Comes The Sun” Beach Day; a day for hope and healing for children and families burdened by cancer. This fun filled day of community and connection will offer a variety of games and workshops such as Ocean Therapy, Art Therapy and various psychosocial activities overseen by our licensed social worker. Every element of this project is carefully designed to support the overall psychological wellbeing and development of coping skills for children and families in bereavement, trauma and survivorship.&nbsp;

Congratulations to&nbsp;SoLA I Can Foundation&nbsp;on winning the Lakers Youth Foundation&nbsp;January 2023&nbsp;YOU Grant Contest!

Mission Statement:&nbsp;The SoLa I CAN Foundation is built on a simple premise: If you can see it, you can be it. SoLa I CAN works to end intergenerational poverty in South Los Angeles through community development and creating new access to economic and educational opportunity.

Funding Project:&nbsp;The SoLa I CAN Foundation is seeking support for its SoLa Technology and Entrepreneurship Center. The first-of-its-kind in Los Angeles, the center works to train and inspire the next generation of Black and brown technology professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders from South LA - the largest tech access desert in LA County. Support from the Lakers Youth Foundation would go directly to supporting the cost of student enrollment and materials in the center’s four career pathways: 1) Technology; 2) Entrepreneurship; 3) Arts, Media and Entertainment; 4) Esports, Video Game Design and Production. 2022 was the center's first year of operation with 1,100 students served. Congratulations to&nbsp;CASA of Los Angeles&nbsp;on winning the Lakers Youth Foundation&nbsp;November 2022&nbsp;YOU Grant Contest!&nbsp;&nbsp;

CASA of Los Angeles organizes the community to take action and advocate for children and families in LA County’s overburdened child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Our vision is a Los Angeles in which all children and families impacted by the child welfare and juvenile justice systems have equitable access to the resources and support they need to thrive.

CASA of Los Angeles humbly requests a grant to support the general operating costs of all our advocacy programs and services, which work to improve the lives and outcomes of children and families in Los Angeles County’s child welfare and juvenile justice systems. After passing a thorough screening process, completing over 40 hours of pre-service training, and getting appointed by a dependency court judge, CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) spend at least 10-15 hours a month for 18 months working directly with a child and their team to link the child to individualized services and maintain connections to their community of supportive adults, as well as attend all court hearings for the child and write focused reports to the judge on the young person’s strengths and progress. CASA’s efforts are focused on ensuring that young people exit the child welfare and juvenile justice systems as soon as possible, avoid re-entry and recidivism, heal and learn to cope with their trauma, safely return to their communities and have long-term supports in place for their futures. CASAs are guided by staff Advocate Supervisors – masters‐level professionals who ensure the highest level of advocacy intervention and efforts for each child appointed to a CASA.

The Lakers Youth Foundation celebrated the 2021-2022 YOU Grant Contest at the April 1st game with an on-court check presentation. The YOU Grant contest was developed to engage Lakers fans by allowing them to vote for the winner of a Lakers Youth Foundation Grant. This Lakers season Social Justice Learning Institute, Compton Kidz Club and Students Run LA were awarded a $5,000 grant to aid in their ongoing efforts to change the lives of many Los Angeles youth.

Social Justice Learning Institute is dedicated to improving the education, health, and well-being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training and community mobilization.

Compton Kidz Club’s mission is the embodiment of a long-held vision of a school that embodies the redemption of the whole child, the academic development and the performing arts skills of students needing a different education experience. A school free of bullying and negativity, inclusive of a safe and supportive learning environment and on track for college and career pathways. Our vision is to build a culture of learning that is relational and engages students through supportive, quality, innovative instruction, integrated technology, responsible social media, social and environmental justice and the performing arts providing students with viable options for college and career readiness. Our mission is to assist students to discover their own creative and innovative processes to remain engaged in school and life through a STEAM education and the performing arts.

Students Run LA’s mission is to challenge underserved secondary students to experience the benefits of goal setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the Los Angeles Marathon.

Congratulations to Students Run LA on winning the Lakers Youth Foundation March 2022 YOU Grant Contest!

The mission of Students Run LA is to challenge underserved secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the Los Angeles Marathon.

Each year, Students Run LA (SRLA) welcomes 3,200 middle and high school students from 185 public schools and community programs across Greater Los Angeles to train alongside their teachers to complete the Los Angeles Marathon, learning along the way that if they can run a marathon, they can do anything! For more than 30 years, our consistent annual results are striking - 99% of students who start the LA Marathon, finish it.

To get students ready for the BIG DAY, SRLA organizes, transports, and pays for students to enter 6 community races of progressively longer distances, building from a 5K to a 30K race. Funding is needed to provide students with the resources &amp; training materials to be successful: uniforms &amp; shoes, entry to 6 community races, transportation to the races, and water &amp; nutrition at the races.

Compton Kidz Club will use the LYF grant for equipment, food, transportation and operational expenses. We recently had a break in and lost equipment (keyboard, speakers, mixing board, and mics).

Congratulations to Social Justice Learning Institute on winning the Lakers Youth Foundation November 2021 YOU Grant Contest!

The Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) is dedicated to improving the education, health, and well-being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training and community mobilization.

Since 2008, SJLI’s Urban Scholars program has been altering the life trajectories of young boys and men of color by improving academic competencies, self-efficacy, and college readiness. Well-researched, evidence-based and academically sound, our program is a credit-bearing course, embedded into the school’s master schedule. Our scholars develop into critically conscious advocates for justice within their own communities. The program interrupts the school-to-prison pipeline by using a social justice youth development curriculum and integrates mental health and trauma informed practices that teach students how to respond to the negative elements in students’ lives.
