A back-and-forth game until the final seconds led to an overtime period and a 112-106 Grizzlies loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night at FedExForum.
In the extra period, the Grizzlies were outscored by the Blazers 10-4 and fell to 30-22 overall and 2-3 in overtime games. Portland improved to 26-27 on their regular season and 1-2 in games requiring extra time.
The Trail Blazers scored the first three baskets in the overtime period pushing the lead to 108-102. A Zach Randolph put-back layup and a Mike Conley floater put the Grizzlies back within two (108-106) of Portland.
Portland took a couple trips to the charity stripe and with 6.9 seconds remaining in the overtime, the Trail Blazers took the lead 110-106. Despite two Jeff Green blocks, the Grizzlies couldn’t regain the lead in the overtime.
Conley led the Grizzlies with a season-high 27 points and three assists, while Randolph contributed 26 points, four assists and nine rebounds. Before leaving the game due to a right mid-foot injury with 1:01 remaining in the first quarter, Marc Gasol notched 11 points, three rebounds and two assists in 11 minutes of play.
From the bench, Mario Chalmers and Green each tallied 12 points with Green collecting six rebounds and two blocks.
On the other side, Damian Lillardled all scorers with 33 points and four assists. C.J. McCollum tallied 21 points and dished out a game-high six assists, while Gerald Henderson and Allen Crabbe scored 16 points and 17 points, respectively.
The Grizzlies outscored the Blazers in the first quarter, taking a 27-25 lead into the second period. However, Portland scored 26 points to Memphis’ 22 in the second quarter to edge the Grizzlies 51-49 heading into the half.
The overtime thriller, the second straight at FedExForum, saw 17 lead changes and 18 ties before the eventual loss.
The Grizzlies continue the action before the All-Star Break with an away contest against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at the Barclays Center. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and fans can follow the game on FOX Sports Southeast or listen in on 92.9 FM ESPN.
