The grind doesn't stop! Grizzlies defeat Suns 102-91

The Grizzlies continue their historic, season opening winning streak by defeating the Suns, 102-91, Wednesday night in Phoenix.

The Grizzlies, who won all four meetings between the teams last season, forced 10 turnovers in the third quarter and turned an 11-point deficit in the second quater into a 5-point lead going into the fourth. Mike Conley and fellow guard Courtney Lee, both coming off injuries, scored 17 of Memphis' 30 third-quarter points.

Conley, who injured his ankle in the previous game, had 24 points and 11 assists. Lee, who missed the past two games with a concussion, scored 22 points with 4-of-5 shooting on 3-pointers. Marc Gasol scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Key Run of the Night

  • The Grizzlies outscored the Suns 18-5 within the first 5 minutes of the third quarter and led by as many as five points at 64-59.

On First Half v. Second Half
“They’re a good team and holding them to under 20 points in both the third and the fourth quarter, we’re really proud of our guys. We just played with a lot more force. We rebounded better; our effort was a lot better. We got contributions from a lot of different places. When we got stops and got rebounds we were able to get out and get some easy buckets which is difficult for us, which is great for us.”

“We’re fortunate we caught them on a second of a back to back. They’re a very good team. We were physical and we checked out and got out and ran and I’m really happy. We’re playing 7 games in 11 days, it’s a grind and the first half we didn’t play the way we play, we tried to play with them and there wasn’t any whistles and lots of one pass jump shots and there was all kind of nice and easy for both teams. We had to make them expend more energy and we didn’t do that in the first half.”
-- Coach Dave Joerger

On First Half v. Second Half
“I thought the first half we let them get into a good rhythm offensively. They’re a very good offensive team. They can get out and get a lot of points up very quickly. I think the second half we did a much better drive of limiting their paint catches or their drives into the paint and it didn’t put as much pressure on us that way. We got them to turn it over and get our in transition and control the pace a little bit better than the first half.”

“I’m just happy to have a complete game. I’ve been struggling there for a little bit and finally seeing the ball go in at the beginning helped with a lot of things. I think in the second half I just tried to stay aggressive and make plays for my team and do what was working for us.”
-- Mike Conley
