The NBA announced today that Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul has been selected to the 2013-14 All-NBA First Team and forward Blake Griffin was named a member of the All-NBA Second Team. It is the fourth time in Paul’s career he has been selected to the First Team and his sixth All-NBA honor. Paul received 540 overall points, the fourth most among all players and 86 First Team votes. This is the third straight season Griffin has been named to the Second Team.
Paul and Griffin helped lead the Clippers to the most successful regular season in franchise history and captured the club’s second consecutive Pacific Division title, finishing with a 57-25 (.695) record. They are the only players in franchise history to be named to an All-NBA team three times.
For Paul, the honor is a cap on another stellar season that saw him make his seventh straight All-Star appearance and also earn a spot on the NBA All-Defensive First Team for the third straight season. Paul led the NBA in assists (10.7 apg) and steals (2.48 spg), while averaging 19.1 points and 4.3 rebounds. He became the seventh player in NBA history to top the 6,000-assist plateau before the end of his ninth season. He's only the fourth player in NBA history to reach 6,000 assists before his 29th birthday, joining Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas and John Stockton.
Griffin, a four-time NBA All-Star, appeared in 80 games (all starts) and averaged a team-high 24.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists and shot 52.8 percent from the field in 35.8 minutes per game. He became the first player since Shaquille O’Neal in 2002-03 to average at least 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists while shooting 50 percent or better. Since 1995-96 only five players besides Griffin have had such prolific seasons (O’Neal four times, Karl Malone four times, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson and Tim Duncan). He also became just the third player in NBA history to top 6,000 points, 3,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists while also shooting 50 percent or better from the field before the end of his fourth season. Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Charles Barkley are the only other players to do so.
Clippers center DeAndre Jordan, who led the NBA in both field goal percentage (67.6%) and rebounding (13.6), and was only the third player to finish a season atop the league in both categories (Dwight Howard, Wilt Chamberlain), received 21 points.
The All-NBA Teams were chosen by a panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. The media voted for All-NBA First, Second and Third Teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis. Below are the results of the voting for the 2013-14 All-NBA Teams, with First Team votes in parentheses. The balloting was tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Ernst & Young LLP.
