On Thursday, the Warriors Community Foundation’s Makin’ Hoops Program unveiled its 85th refurbished basketball court in the Bay Area. This week, the Warriors and PepsiCo teamed up and revealed a brand-new basketball court at Westside Courts in San Francisco with former Warriors players Adonal Foyle and San Francisco Mayor London Breed tipping off the court dedication ceremony. Families, friends and community members can now use this space to develop their memories, have fun, enjoy one another and most importantly build a stronger community.

The Warriors Community Foundation, in partnership with Good Tidings Foundation and BlackRock, will unveil newly refurbished basketball courts in the gymnasium and on the playground of the Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center (TEL HI) at 660 Lombard Street in San Francisco on Thursday, August 24 at 3:00 p.m. Warriors Community Ambassador Adonal Foyle will be in attendance to officially open the courts to the more than 50 youth from TEL HI. The new courts are made possible by the Makin’ Hoops program, a partnership between the Warriors Community Foundation and Good Tidings Foundation, which has refurbished more than 70 basketball courts around the Bay Area, including the Nate Thurmond Panhandle Basketball Courts in Golden Gate Park and the Jason Richardson Court at Rainbow Recreation Center in Oakland.

“The Warriors Community Foundation prides itself on helping create safe and supportive environments around the Bay Area,” said Vice President of Community Relations and Executive Director of the Warriors Community Foundation Joanne Pasternack. “We’re eager to leave a positive mark on our community, and basketball courts like those at TEL HI are one of the most tangible and visible ways we can make a demonstrated impact in the lives of our neighbors.”

The refurbished court in the TEL HI gymnasium will feature a resurfaced playing court and wall pads, while the playground’s court has received an updated blacktop with new paint, basketball hoops and striping. The renovation project, made possible by BlackRock’s support, will positively affect children, seniors and community members who use the space daily for activities including basketball games, tai chi, dancing, organized sports leagues and more. Thursday’s unveiling ceremony will include a basketball clinic, led by Warriors Basketball Camp coaches and BlackRock volunteers, with roughly 50 youth from TEL HI on the newly renovated courts.

On Monday, October 20, former Golden State Warriors guard and 2014 Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Fame inductee Mitch Richmond teamed up with the Warriors Community Foundation, The California Endowment and Good Tidings Foundation to unveil two newly-refurbished basketball courts at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in Richmond, CA. The shooting guard hosted 50 youth from Richmond College Prep and the Richmond Police Activities League for a Warriors Community Basketball Clinic on the new courts created in honor of the Hall of Famer.

“I wish that I had the opportunity to play on a court this nice growing up,” said Richmond. “I hope that each of you will follow your dreams, enjoy yourself today and make today a special one.”

The 50 boys and girls arrived at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park Monday afternoon to find two beautiful new regulation basketball courts equipped with 14,000 square feet of all-weather acrylic surfacing, four plexiglass hoop systems, spectator seating and a new drinking fountain for the kids to hydrate and get ready for the next run.

“These new basketball courts help complete a vision, created 10 years ago by local residents as part of the Nystrom United Revitalization Effort (NURVE),” stated James Becker, president and CEO of the Richmond Community Foundation. “The courts will serve hundreds of children and families in the neighborhood and will serve as a centerpiece of the neighborhood,” Becker said.

Mitch Richmond, Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, Warriors Legend and Good Tidings Foundation representative Nate Thurmond, The California Endowment Richmond Program Manager Diane Aranda, Healthy Richmond Hub Committee Member Andre Aikins and Richmond Committee Foundation Board Member Roxanne Cruz were introduced by the event’s emcee and ABC 7 Sports Director, Larry Beil, to the crowd to share words of encouragement and excitement for the new playing surfaces.

“Richmond has enjoyed a baseball diamond and a new football field, but what the children in our community have missed are beautiful new public basketball courts for everyone to enjoy,” said Mayor McLaughlin.

After the ceremony, Richmond hosted a ceremonial tip-off with the children before breaking into a Warriors Community Basketball Clinic with Warriors Youth Basketball staff. The youth spent an hour learning and refining their passing, dribbling and shooting skills with the Hall-of-Famer observing and sharing words of encouragement.
This event is part of the Step Up Your Game program, which will hold basketball court refurbishments, additional Warriors Basketball Clinics and Warriors Dance Team dance clinics throughout the 2014-15 season to provide positive lifestyle and fitness programs for Bay Area youth.

“The Step Up Your Game program, part of The California Endowment and the Active Alliance, is so thrilled to be here with you all today to promote healthy habits and physical activity for such an enthusiastic group of children,” said Aranda.
The Warriors and Good Tidings Foundation have refurbished nearly 50 basketball courts throughout the Bay Area to revitalize local neighborhoods and communities by providing youth with a safe and fun place to play.

“We are proud of what our partnership with the Warriors Community Foundation has accomplished and look forward to the projects ahead of us,” said Thurmond.

This event is also part of NBA Cares Week, as the league’s players, coaches and legends participate in activities and events across the country to support the communities in which we live, work and play. Through this league-wide initiative, NBA players and teams have donated over $242 million, completed more than 3 million hours of community service and created more than 915 places where children and families can live, learn and play.

Warriors Great Mitch Richmond Honored at Basketball Court Unveiling Ceremony in Richmond, CA

On Monday, August 4, the Warriors Community Foundation, PG&amp;E and the Good Tidings Foundation joined Oakland city officials and over 90 Oakland youth to honor former Warriors player Sarunas Marciulionis and unveil the newly refurbished basketball courts at Oakland’s San Antonio Park they donated in his honor. Marciulionis, who will be inducted into the 2014 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on August 8, was honored by the court dedication and excited for the boys and girls who have the chance to enjoy the new courts.

“This is a beautiful court and it is proof that people can do great things,” said Marciulionis. “The Golden State Warriors, PG&amp;E and the city can do great things for the young generation to play basketball and commit to sports.”

Marciulionis, the European Player of the Year who led the Soviet Union to the gold medal in 1988, is active with youth groups in his home country of Lithuania and dedicated to improving the quality of life for children in communities throughout the world.

“The courts I grew up playing on were much worse than this one before it was renovated, so courts like this show we must have the initiative to improve our community, respect it and commit to its development with leadership and dedication,” said Marciulionis.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and City Council President Pat Kernighan attended the court unveiling ceremony Monday and shared their excitement for the children who will benefit from the updated surfaces and improved safety conditions in the park.

“There are not a lot of recreational opportunities in this area, and this basketball court was falling apart, so for the Warriors Community Foundation, PG&amp;E and the Good Tidings Foundation to come here and build a beautiful court for these local children to enjoy means the world to them,” said Kernighan.

The new Sarunas Marciulionis Court at San Antonio Park features a refurbished surface, new backboards and rims and permanent signage.

“It is one our key focus areas to support the vitality of the neighborhoods where we live and work, and we couldn’t be more proud to play a part in this project,” said PG&amp;E Chief Sustainability Officer Ezra Garrett.

After a group photo and ceremonial tip-off, the 90 boys and girls with Oakland Recreation and Parks department and the Oakland Police Activities League warmed up and broke into groups to work on their basketball skills with Warriors Youth Basketball staff. The 7-12 year old boys and girls laughed, played and enjoyed their time on the brand new courts.

“A new court like this shows our young people that we as a community care about them,” said Oakland Police Activities League President Margaret Dixon. “For PG&amp;E and the Warriors to take time out and dedicate this court and invest in these children and their future is what makes a true impact.”
This represents nearly 50 court refurbishment that the Warriors and the Good Tidings Foundation have teamed up on since 1999, helping to beautify and improve local neighborhoods and communities.

“Having good quality outdoor spaces for kids to play are absolutely critical for neighborhoods such as San Antonio Park, and so a big thanks go to the Warriors for their generosity and partnering with us in recent years to revitalize several Oakland facilities,” said Oakland Mayor Jean Quan.

Earlier this summer, the Warriors Community Foundation, PG&amp;E and the Good Tidings Foundation refurbished the Columbia Park Clubhouse court in the Mission District and held an unveiling ceremony for youth from Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of San Francisco.

On Thursday, June 5, the Warriors Community Foundation and PG&amp;E joined the Good Tidings Foundation to renovate the Boys &amp; Girls Club basketball court at the Columbia Park Clubhouse in San Francisco’s Mission district. Warriors forward Harrison Barnes and President and Chief Operating Officer Rick Welts visited the Boys &amp; Girls Club to unveil the new court and share encouraging words with the kids.

“This is a great looking court, and the best part is that it’s all yours this summer to play and have fun,” said Barnes.

A member of the Boys and Girls Club of Ames, Iowa, Barnes spent much of his youth playing sports and honing his craft at the Boys and Girls Club basketball court, and was excited to present this sparkling new court to his fellow members.

“You are all extremely fortunate to have a gym like this to come and practice and play every day,” said Barnes. “Maybe if I had a place like this to practice growing up, I would have become a better player than I am now.”

Over the two previous weeks, the Warriors, PG&amp;E and the Good Tidings Foundation, along with an assist from Benjamin Moore &amp; Co., visited Columbia Park Clubhouse to refurbish the floor surface, clean, repaint and install new scoreboards, Warriors-branded wall padding, backboards and rims.

“It’s hard to believe that this is the same court that I saw two weeks ago, and I know the kids can hardly believe that they can play in a state of the art facility like this one all summer,” said Boys &amp; Girls Club of San Francisco President Rob Connolly.

After the ceremonial tip off, Warriors Youth Basketball staff sent Boys &amp; Girls Club members into basketball drills and stations, with Barnes playing a game of one on one with each lucky youth.

“These young men and women are extremely fortunate to have a local program such as the Boys &amp; Girls Club and a community around them that prioritizes their positive experiences, development and personal well-being,” said Welts. “If they one day develop into the kind of person that Harrison Barnes is, they should consider themselves successful.”

Before leaving the event, each Boys &amp; Girls Club of San Francisco member received a Warriors gift bag, a satisfying conclusion to an exciting start for their summer program.

“I’m excited for these guys to use this new gym as much as they can and to continue on the path they’ve set for themselves,” said Barnes.

This is the first of two court renovations that the Warriors Community Foundation and PG&amp;E will team up to beautify and refurbish this offseason. Later this summer, the two will join the City of Oakland Parks &amp; Recreation department to renovate Oakland’s San Antonio Park and Recreation Center.

“The Golden State Warriors and PG&amp;E are committed to providing positive experiences and safe environments for children throughout the Bay Area, and renovations like the one completed today exemplify that,” said PG&amp;E Vice President of Community Relations and Chief Sustainability Officer Ezra Garrett.

Harrison Barnes Joins Warriors Community Foundation and PG&E To Unveil Renovated Basketball Court At San Francisco’s Columbia Park Playhouse

The Warriors Community Foundation and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&amp;E) today announced a partnership to bring the Makin’ Hoops program to two court locations this summer. The Makin’ Hoops program assists in the beautification and refurbishment of local basketball courts throughout the Bay Area.

The Warriors and PG&amp;E will first visit Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of San Francisco’s Columbia Park Clubhouse in the Mission district (450 Guerrero Street, San Francisco CA 94110) to refurbish the floor surface, clean, repaint and install new scoreboards, wall padding, backboards and rims. On Thursday, June 5 from 10:00am – 11:00am, Warriors President and Chief Operating Officer Rick Welts and Warriors forward Harrison Barnes will participate in the court unveiling ceremony with Barnes participating in basketball drills and games with youth from Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of San Francisco, an organization that serves more than 1,400 youth each day at eight Clubhouses located in the neighborhoods with the fewest resources.

Later this summer, the Warriors Community Foundation, PG&amp;E and the City of Oakland Parks &amp; Recreation department will refurbish and beautify basketball courts at Oakland’s San Antonio Park &amp; Recreation Center (1701 East 19th Street, Oakland, CA 94606). Both sites are in desperate need of upgrades and updates to better serve their respective communities.

Created in 1999, the Makin’ Hoops program, in collaboration with the Good Tidings Foundation, has refurbished nearly 50 basketball courts throughout the Bay Area that remain a source of neighborhood pride for their adjacent communities. Refurbished courts are resurfaced and receive new backboards, nets, rims, striping and signage.

The Warriors and PG&amp;E first teamed up to create and refurbish the Chris Mullin Court at the Arroyo Viejo Recreation Center in Oakland on March 8, 2012, creating two outdoor basketball courts for the more than 450 students in the school and after school programs at the recreation center to enjoy.
