Agassi. Federer. Sampras… O’Neal? The Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, CA, usually a setting that displays riveting rallies, backhands and overhead smashes, played host to the first outdoor basketball game in the NBA’s modern era Saturday night. However, instead of the contest being about the beauty of a hardwood

Unlike professional tennis players or golfers, who mostly developed their skills at plush country clubs, most basketball players fine-tuned their games at their local playgrounds and parks. While baseball and football may be popular, basketball is the only sport you need nothing other than a ball and a pair of kicks. It is by far the most democratic game. You don’t need to pay any memberships anywhere or buy any special equipment, you just have to show up to the park and holler out, “I got next!”

With the Suns scheduled to play the second outdoor game in their history tonight, there was the predictable search through the memory banks to dredge up hazy recollections of the first one 36 years ago.
Saturday’s exhibition vs. the Denver Nuggets will be played under the lights at the plush Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif., while Outdoor I was played on September 24, 1972 in no-frills Hiram Bithorn Baseball Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico against the Milwaukee Bucks.

As the Suns took the court at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, in preparation for Saturday’s matchup against the Nuggets, one thing was for sure… this wouldn’t be your grandmother’s preseason contest. When fans think of the preseason, they think of their favorite stars playing 20 minutes, errant jumpers and getting a sneak peek at players that will be tearing up Europe in a month. They don’t think of a nationally televised game on TNT featuring the network’s A-Team of broadcasters that includes Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller and Marv Albert.

For those who followed training camp and two public scrimmages, the first preseason look at Planet Orange’s brave new world didn’t provide a lot of surprises. But for those who last saw the Suns last April, Phoenix looked like a team under construction and not quite ready for public consumption in a 100-96 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

In the wake of the coaching merry-go-round that spun Coach Mike off to New York, both General Manager Steve Kerr and Coach Terry Porter vowed these Suns would be different. And one of the few things we could get out of last night’s game was that that promise is being kept.
These Suns are indeed “different”.

Every one of the 2007-08 predictions we listed last year had the Suns winning their division. Not so this season. While the experts don't all think the Suns will end up 1st in the Pacific Division, they are hedging their bets by pointing out that the Suns could have a great season if the chemistry of all the All-Star veterans works out. Here are what several national publications and web sites are predicting for the team this year.

Gearing up for the season

The Suns had an all-employee meeting this morning in the Casino Arizona Pavilion at US Airways Center. It’s something they usually do a few weeks before the season starts. With employees spread out through the entire arena, it’s hard to fathom how many people actually work for the team. But when we are all there together, you realize how many people it takes to keep an arena, 3 teams and many other events going on a daily basis.
Team President, Rick Welts, usually speaks to the employees and lets them know how the business is going, what the goals for the upcoming season are, etc. That still happened and it was great to hear his vision of the next year. After Welts spoke, we had several other people talk about the upcoming season including the All-Star Game that is coming to Phoenix in February 2009. We had some discussion of what that would bring to Phoenix and to US Airways Center. Then because of all of the changes that happened in the off-season, we also had some special guests.
