Raptors sting Hornets in final minutes to stay perfect

The Toronto Raptors erased a five-point deficit with 5:58 remaining in the game to end the 2010 NBA Summer League with a perfect 5-0 record with their 101-93 win over the winless New Orleans Hornets (0-5) Saturday afternoon from UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center.

Trailing for the seventh time by five points in the game, Toronto went on a 22-9 run to finish the affair with an eight-point margin of victory.

Toronto looked like it had taken control of the game in the third quarter after reeling off a 14-4 run that began with 1:18 remaining before the half. The run spanned a total of 4:34, which witnessed the Raptors pull ahead 56-49.

The Raptors pushed out to as much as an eight-point cushion multiple times through the third before the Hornets made a push of their own. New Orleans rattled off a 19-6 run in the final 4:21 of the frame to claim another five-point lead at 74-69.

New Orleans claimed its last lead with 1:08 remaining into the third and maintained it until there was 3:37 left in the game. Cheikh Samb then put Toronto in the driver's seat for good at 89-88 with a hook shot.

Samb scored four of his squad's nine points in the final 3:37 and was joined by three from Ronald Dupree and two from Michael Roll.

Dupree led the Raptors with a team-high 24 points. Samb followed closely with 19 of his own.

Quincy Pondexter led all scorers with 26 in a losing effort for the Hornets. Maurice Ager joined Pondexter in the 20-point club with 21 tallies.

Craig Brackins was the only player to tally a double-double in the contest with a combination of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The first half of action was a seesaw affair with the teams combining for 17 lead changes and four ties. The Hornets held as much as a five-point lead on three different occasions, but watched as the Raptors pulled even in the waning moments of the half.

The Hornets got its 47 first-half points from three main contributors; Ager (12), Pondexter (11) and Brackins (10). The Raptors countered with eight different scorers with Bobby Brown chipping in 13.
