An evenly matched contest throughout, the Minnesota Timberwolves edged the Memphis Grizzlies 66-65 despite a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Memphis first-round pick Greivis Vazquez in the nightcap at the COX Pavilion on Day 8 of 2010 NBA Summer League on the campus of UNLV.
The game featured five ties and six lead changes.
Sam Young hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in the game to bring the Grizzlies within two at 64-62. But the Timberwolves made two free throws to push their lead back to four. Then, Vasquez spotted up and nailed a trey, but it wasn't enough for the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves got the game started with a 9-2 run in the middle of the first quarter to extend their lead to 14-8 before trading baskets until the period ended. Neither team shot well in the first, with the Grizzlies hitting 29 percent and Minnesota managing 30 percent. Minnesota led 18-11 at the end of the first.
In the second period, the tables turned, with Memphis going on a run, outscoring Minnesota 16-3 in the first half of the quarter.
Memphis led by as many as eight in the second before going to halftime down 32-31. Minnesota's Wayne Ellington scored 10 points in the second, including back-to-back buckets to stop a Grizzlies' run.
Ellington and Patrick O'Bryant combined for all 14 of the Timberwolves points in the third, all of which came in the first six minutes of the period. The duo extended the Timberwolves' lead to as many as 10. Memphis fought back, outscoring Minnesota 8-0 in the last four minutes, including Jeff Adrien's three-point play with 0.8 seconds left in the quarter.
Young scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth, while Ellington poured in 25 of his own.
Adrien led all players with 14 boards. He also scored 10 points.
Minnesota returns to action Saturday to take on the Portland Trail Blazers, while the Grizzlies finish their NBA Summer League stint on Sunday, when the team faces the San Antonio Spurs.
