Raptors fend off Rockets down the stretch

LAS VEGAS -- The Toronto Raptors improved to 2-0 in the 2010 NBA Summer League with their 100-91 victory over the Houston Rockets (2-2) Tuesday afternoon in the Thomas & Mack Center. The Raptors took ownership of the game with help from an 18-7 run at the start of the second quarter after watching the Rockets cut an eight-point lead to one at the end of first stanza. Toronto went up by 16 on numerous occasions only to see Houston pull within four in the final two minutes.

Toronto held its last 16-point lead with 5:16 remaining on the clock before Houston battled back with a 14-2 run over the next 3:12. Jordan Hill and Jermaine Taylor were the main culprits for the Rockets comeback attempt, as they scored nine and seven points, respectively.

After seeing their lead cut to four, the Rockets scored nine of the next 14 to finish the game with a nine-point margin of victory. DeMar DeRozan scored five consecutive points to push the lead back to nine in a 26-second span. DeRozan finished the game with a game-high 23 points and five rebounds.

Bobby Brown joined DeRozan in the 20-point club with 20 scores of his own. Sonny Weems, who scored eight points at the start of the second quarter, pitched in 13. Joey Dorsey and Solomon Alabi had 13 and 10, respectively, to close out the double-digit scorers.

Houston was led offensively by 17 points from Jermaine Taylor. Hill finished out the game with 15, while Patrick Patterson had 14. Chase Budinger scored 13, while Trevon Hughes and Alexander Johnson.

Toronto finished the game shooting 52.9 percent (36-for-68) to Houston's 43.2 percent (35-for-81). Neither team did much damage from behind the arc, as the Raptors connected three times to the Rockets two.
