LAS VEGAS -- Coby Karl, son of Denver Nuggets had coach George Karl, led the Denver Nuggets with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists as the Nuggets defeated the Dallas Mavericks 88-70 in the first of 58 games at the 2010 NBA Summer League on the campus of the University of Las Vegas-Nevada on Friday afternoon.
"I think in general as a team we had a lot of fun," said Karl of the game.
"I think in the second half personally, and as a team, we got a little scattered and had too many turnovers and missed too many layups, but I think generally it was a good start for us. I hope we can get five in a row."
The Nuggets got the desert classic off to an exciting start, jumping to an 11-0 lead in the game's opening three minutes. The Mavericks rallied back, though, cutting the deficit to three, 14-11, with under five minutes to play in the first quarter. That was the closest the team from Texas would come - Denver withstood the run and outscored Dallas 9-6 in the last four minutes of the quarter to finish on top, 23-17 on the back of Shan Edwards' 11-point period.
Up ten with just under three minutes to play in the second quarter, Denver went on a 12-2 run en route to a 20-point half-time advantage, 47-27. The Nuggets continued to dominate into the second quarter, outscoring Dallas 24-10, while they outshot the Mavericks 52 percent to 28 percent in the first half. Edwards led all scorers at the end of the first half with 13 points, while Dallas' Dominique Jones went into the half time locker room with a team-high 11 points.
Denver stretched their lead to as many as 23 points in the third period before Dallas and guard Rodrique Beaubois fought back. Beaubois scored eight points in the period while his Mavericks outscored the Nuggets 26-17, cutting what had been a 20-point deficit into an 11-point hole at the end of three, 64-53.
Dallas owned the third and Denver dominated the fourth, taking an 11-point third quarter lead and stretching it back to 23 points to conclude the game on the back of a 24-17 scoring advantage and holding the red-hot Beaubois scoreless in the period.
Karl's efforts for the Nuggets was complimented by Richard Roby's 16 points, Edwards' 15 points and an 11-point outing from Ty Lawson. For the Mavericks, Jones led all scorers with 19 points, while Beaubois, Mouhammad Faye and DeShawn Sims each finished with 12 points. For the game, The Nuggets outshot Dallas 48 percent to 37 percent, while Dallas won the battle of the boards, finishing with 39 team rebounds to Denver's 33.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow, July 10, when the Nuggets take on the Los Angeles Lakers at 3pm and the Mavericks dake on the Houston Rockets at 7pm. Both games will be played at COX Pavilion.
