SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rookie Marvin Bagley III debuted in style Monday, scoring 18 points to help the Sacramento Kings edge the Los Angeles Lakers, 98-93, on the opening day of the California Classic Summer League at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
The second overall pick in this year’s Draft, Bagley hit a hook shot with 1:04 to play to give the Kings a 91-87 lead. Bagley, who had six rebounds and three blocks, then knocked down a free throw for a five-point margin, 92-87.
A Frank Mason 3-pointer sealed the deal, as he drilled a 26-foot trey to help put the game out of reach with 22 seconds remaining. He added a pair of free throws moments later to ice it, finishing with 16 points.
Point guard De’Aaron Fox led the Kings with 23 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. Power forward Harry Giles III, making his pro debut, added 13 points.
The Lakers led by as many as 12 in the first half and went into halftime up, 54-48. The Kings fought back in the third quarter, tying 67-67 by the end of the period and then taking the lead for good, 69-67, with 9:11 remaining in the fourth quarter as Mason fed Zach Auguste for a a dunk.
Rookie big man Moritz Wagner scored 23 points to lead the Lakers, though he shot just 6 of 18 from the field. Guard Josh Hart also scored 23 more points, knocking down four of his seven 3-point attempts. Svi Mykhailiuk added 15 points.
