Randolph received a total of 379 points, including 59 first-place votes, from a panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Cleveland’s Carlos Boozer finished second with 166 points (12 first-place votes) and Memphis’ James Posey was third with 137 points (17 first-place votes). Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote received.
In his third NBA season, Randolph averaged 20.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 37.9 minutes per game. He improved his scoring average from last season by 11.7 ppg (up from 8.4 ppg), his rebounding average by 6.0 rpg (up from 4.5 rpg), his assists average by 1.5 apg (up from 0.5 apg).
He started 80 of the 81 games in which he played for Portland this season, leading the Trail Blazers in scoring in 44 games and in rebounds 61 times. He also led the team in scoring (20.1 ppg) and rebounds (10.5 rpg), while finishing second in minutes played.
A first-round selection in the 2001 NBA Draft (19th overall pick), Randolph turned in 43 double-double performances this season, ranking fifth in the league. He also posted a career-high 34 points versus Indiana on December 3, and tied his career-high in rebounds with 20 against the Phoenix Suns on December 18.
