Notebook: Trail Blazers 122, Rockets 120 (OT)

THE FACT: The Portland Trail Blazers earned their first victory over the Houston Rockets in Game 1 of a playoff series after losing the opening game of the previous three postseason encounters between these clubs.

THE LEAD: LaMarcus Aldridge scored a playoff-franchise-record 46 points and grabbed a postseason-career-high 18 rebounds, and Damian Lillard added 31 points and nine boards in his first playoff appearance to propel Portland to a 122-120 overtime win over Houston in Game 1 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series.

Dwight Howard led the Rockets with 27 points and 15 rebounds, but he missed four critical free-throw attempts late in the fourth quarter to aid the Blazers in their comeback from an 11-point deficit. James Harden scored 27 points but missed 20 of 28 shot attempts, and Chandler Parsons chipped in 24 points and six rebounds.

Houston held a 98-87 lead with 4:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Blazers rallied behind stingy defense and Aldridge and Lillard's heroics to force overtime. The Rockets appeared to take control again after they scored the first six points of the extra session, but Portland continued to come up with answers when needed.

QUOTABLE: "I thought every guy fought, every guy took it personal. Every guy took every matchup personally. That was my goal. ... I just want us to have a chip on our shoulder."
-- LaMarcus Aldridge

THE STAT: Houston did not move the ball much and relied too heavily on isolation offense down the stretch, dishing out only two assists in the fourth quarter and overtime combined.

TURNING POINT: With the Blazers facing a six-point deficit less than a minute into overtime, Aldridge buried a desperation 3-point heave with Howard draped over him. The massive shot sparked an 8-0 run for Portland, which later secured the victory when James Harden's last-second attempt from mid range did not drop.

HOT: Aldridge and Lillard combined for Portland's final 25 points in regulation en route to becoming the first teammates to go for at least 45 and 30, respectively, in a playoff game since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen in 1992.

QUOTABLE II: "He's been a handful for us all season long, and we'll have to come up with a couple of new ways to try and get the ball out of his hands some, because we just didn't have any answers for him."
-- Rockets coach Kevin McHale on Aldridge

NOT: Harden and Parsons never found a groove from the outside, finishing a combined 6-for-25 (24.0 percent) from 3-point range.

GOOD MOVE: The Blazers successfully utilized the "Hack-A-Howard" technique to erase a double-digit deficit in the fourth period, as Howard missed four of six free-throw attempts before he was temporarily pulled from the game. Despite Howard's removal, Houston's offense sputtered in the short term with turnovers on back-to-back possessions.

BAD MOVE: Patrick Beverley became a tad too aggressive shortly after baiting Aldridge into his sixth foul. The 6-foot-1 guard seemed to forget that he, too, was in serious foul trouble and would be done for the night with one more slip-up. Lillard used Beverley's physical approach against him and attacked on the Blazers' first possession without Aldridge, forcing the officials to call Beverley's sixth foul.

QUOTABLE III: "It was a Damian Lillard performance. Damian rises to the occasion. For all those people who were wanting to know if he was ready for the playoffs, I think he answered that question."
-- Portland coach Terry Stotts

NOTABLE: Beverley sprained his knee before fouling out during overtime. He will undergo an MRI on Monday to assess the damage. ... The last three players to score at least 46 points and grab at least 18 rebounds in a playoff game -- Aldridge, Howard and former Rocket and Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon -- were all at Toyota Center for Sunday's game.

UP NEXT: Game 2, Wednesday @ Houston, Game 3, Friday @ Portland, Game 4, Sunday @ Portland.
