Notebook: Heat 99, Bobcats 88

THE FACT: The Miami Heat defeated the Charlotte Bobcats for the 17th straight time.

THE LEAD: The two-time defending champion Heat shook off a slow start to capture a 99-88 victory against the Bobcats in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Sunday at American Airlines Arena. LeBron James led the Heat with 27 points and nine rebounds. Guard Dwyane Wade added 23 points and five assists to help the Heat grab a 1-0 lead in the series.

The Heat were down many as nine in the first half and trailed 52-49 with 9:01 left in the third quarter. Miami then received a boost from seldom-used reserve swingman James Jones, who scored 12 points. Jones hit a 3-pointer with 45.1 seconds left in the third quarter to make it a six-point game.

Guard Kemba Walker led the Bobcats with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Center Al Jefferson finished with 18 points but was less effective after sustaining a foot injury in the second quarter.

QUOTABLE: "We were flat to start but I think our guys were just anxious to get started, to finally start the postseason games. We started to get more into our groove at the end of the first quarter."
-- Heat coach Erik Spoelstra

THE STAT: The Heat went 11-for-23 from the 3-point arc.

TURNING POINT: After playing to nearly a standstill, James hit a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter that had to crush the Bobcats mentally. The basket put Miami ahead by seven.

HOT: Although it was James who got the Heat rolling in the third quarter, this game was a chance for Wade to display his health. After being bothered by a hamstring strain late in the season, he showed he was closer to 100 percent.

NOT: If the Bobcats are going to compete, they will need Gerald Henderson to make Wade play defense. Henderson didn't do enough to make Wade exert too much energy on the defensively. It's a different game when Wade has to play both ends.

GOOD MOVE: Spoelstra tweaked the rotation by playing Jones ahead of Shane Battier. With Battier slumping, Jones provided a spark just before halftime. He was able to spread the floor with his shooting.

BAD MOVE: This could be a quick postseason for the Bobcats if Jefferson doesn't heal. He was a different player in the second half after sustaining the foot injury. There were times he was so hobbled he was unable to position himself for rebounds.

NOTABLE: Heat forward Michael Beasley did not play because of a sprained ankle. Jefferson will likely be a game-time decision for Wednesday. He took a pain-killer following Sunday's game.

UP NEXT: Game 2 Wednesday at American Airlines Arena.
