Spurs-Grizzlies Preview

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The towels are showing up all around Memphis. They hang over neighborhood signs and even at a door to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The sentiment? Believe Memphis.

The Grizzlies certainly do.

Yes, they are down 0-2 to San Antonio in their first Western Conference final, but they take heart in knowing they dug themselves out of an 0-2 hole in the first round against the Clippers.

No NBA team has won separate series in the same postseason after losing the first two games. The Grizzlies now see only opportunity at home, where they have yet to lose this postseason.

"We got to believe," Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph said. "We got to be confident. We got to believe. Game 2 went down, we came all the way back and went to overtime, so we got to have that confidence and we got to believe in ourselves."

Game 3 is Saturday night.

"Believe Memphis" is the slogan first printed on giveaway towels for fans in the 2011 playoffs, which they held up instead of waving, trying to will the Grizzlies to victory late in a game against Oklahoma City. Yes, the Grizzlies won that game in overtime, and it's been a catch-phrase since then for this small market team in a town best known for its barbecue and music.

Fans are ready for the latest biggest home game in team history, and the Grizzlies hear all the excitement every time they go outside. So they are busy trying to focus on business.

"We're down 0-2 and we've got to take care of home just like they took care of home," Grizzlies guard Tony Allen said Friday. "Simple as that."

The Grizzlies' confidence also stems from a return to the arena they call the "Grindhouse." They set a franchise record winning 32 games there this season, and they are 19-1 here since Feb. 8. Memphis also has lost three straight only twice this season, the last in mid-January.

This series took a three-day break after the Spurs won 93-89 in overtime Tuesday night in Game 2. The Grizzlies took off Wednesday after flying home and practiced Thursday and Friday. The Spurs practiced Wednesday and Thursday before taking off Friday.

The home team has won 17 of the last 20 games between these teams, and the Spurs lost both trips to Memphis during the regular season. With strong memories of blowing a 2-0 lead to Oklahoma City in the Western finals, the Spurs know the games in Memphis will be hard.

"We know they play great at home," Spurs forward Boris Diaw said. "They have a great crowd, and they seem to be more pumped up when they play at home. They are probably going to make more shots, so we've got to be ready for that."

It would be tough for the Grizzlies to shoot much worse than they did in the first two games in San Antonio, including a stretch where they missed seven straight layups in one sequence. They missed 15 of 18 attempts inside 5 feet in the first half, a statistic that surprised Grizzlies guard Mike Conley because of their strength scoring in the paint.

"We don't expect to do that again, but we just have to be better mentally prepared and focused on finishing at the rim," Conley said.

Randolph went 1 of 8 in the first game and shot a bit better in Game 2. But he still struggled with close shots, with the Spurs often doubling down on him. Randolph said he needs guards like Conley, Allen and Jerryd Bayless to be more aggressive helping on the perimeter and moving the ball.

"That rim's tight," Randolph said with a laugh. "No, I'll just be confident. I'll take that shot again tomorrow, and hopefully it goes in."

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins has spent the past two days trying to tighten his defense. He's also worked on his team's spacing in an effort to revive the offense.

In any case, the coach doesn't want his Grizzlies to relax too much and expect a boost simply by being at home.

"As I told our team, being home is not going to win anything for us," Hollins said. "We have to go out and play much better. There's no need at this point to change the starting lineup. I mean we lost an overtime game, and we got blown out in a game. We have to come here, hold serve and we got to play better, obviously."

The Grizzlies also want to make Spurs point guard Tony Parker work harder and spend more energy bringing the ball up the court. That also might slow Parker from getting his teammates involved, something he did all too well in Game 2 with a playoff-best 18 assists.

Parker had an MRI exam on his bruised left calf Thursday. The three-day break provided a welcome break for him.

"I feel like I'll be fine Saturday," he said.

The Spurs, looking to win their first NBA title since 2007, have been getting strong contributions from Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. Both have scored in double figures in each game this series.

Green has not lost sight of that blown 2-0 lead to Oklahoma City a year ago.

"We're a more mature team," he said. "We've been there before so we know what it takes. But we also know what it takes to get past that point and not to be lackadaisical, not to get satisfied. We've just got to continue to just come out and play basketball, stay focused and remember what happened last year."

Spurs take 3-0 lead, beat Grizzlies 104-93 in OT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Tim Duncan is doing his very best to get the San Antonio Spurs back to the NBA Finals one more time.

The 37-year-old center took control in overtime for a second straight game, this time scoring the first five points as the Spurs rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 104-93 Saturday night.

That put them a win away from their first finals since 2007.

"He was huge for us the other night in overtime and got it done for us, and he did it again tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of the two-time MVP. "That's why he is considered as great as he has for the last 17 years. He's been unbelievable. He feels a responsibility to carry us in those kinds of times, and he did it again tonight."

Duncan wants to get back to the finals after being on the verge last year. He said he was more aggressive in overtime after being a bit tentative with his shot in regulation.

"I'm not worried about how old I am or whatever, whatever it may be," Duncan said. "I'm very focused on having another opportunity to make it to a championship and try to win, that's all."

The Spurs grabbed a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference finals and now have won five straight this postseason. With the memory of blowing a 2-0 lead a year ago in the West finals to Oklahoma City, when they lost the next four, the Spurs shook off their sloppy play early and pushed the young Grizzlies to the edge of elimination in the first West final played in Memphis.

The Grizzlies knocked off the Clippers after trailing 0-2 and upset the West's top seed in Oklahoma City in the semifinals. Now their task is even tougher with Game 4 in Memphis on Monday night.

"We've been fortunate to get this far, and we've got to play better if we want to continue," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said.

Memphis set up for the final shot to win in regulation, but guard Mike Conley missed on a runner at the buzzer. He said he went a little too deep in the paint on the shot.

No NBA team has lost a series when leading 3-0.

"It is frustrating, but you know it gives us hope at the same time knowing that we can fight our way back," Conley said. "And we have had chances to win each of these games. This was a tough one to swallow, but it was a good learning lesson. There's no group of guys I'd rather be with down 3-0 to try to fight back in it."

San Antonio, which didn't lead this game until the opening minute of the fourth quarter, can wrap up the series Monday in Memphis and get back to the finals for a shot at their fifth title as a franchise.

"One of the best wins I've witnessed being a Spur," Spurs guard Manu Ginobili said.

The Spurs hit eight of their 10 shots in overtime, with Duncan scoring seven of his 24 points. He also had 10 rebounds. Tony Parker had five of his 26 in overtime, and even Tiago Splitter, playing with four fouls, scored six in the extra five minutes to finish with 11.

"For whatever reason, we didn't panic," Parker said of a start that included four turnovers in the first quarter. "We knew they wanted to come with a lot of energy in the first half. We played our game and came back."

Mike Conley led Memphis with 20 points. Marc Gasol had 16 points and 14 rebounds, Zach Randolph added 14 and 15, and Quincy Pondexter had 15 points. But the Grizzlies, who thrived at the free throw line in knocking off Oklahoma City, got there only 18 times and made only 10.

The Grizzlies last led 85-84 with 1:04 left in regulation on a 15-footer by Gasol. After that, they managed only to tie it up twice, the last on a layup by Randolph with 4:28 left in overtime. Duncan scored and knocked down the free throw with 4:10 remaining to put the Spurs ahead to stay.

The Spurs dominated the Grizzlies in the paint, outscoring Memphis 58-42 to offset their 17 turnovers, which the Grizzlies turned into 25 points. After the Grizzlies outscored San Antonio in the first quarter, the Spurs outscored them in each of the final three periods and overtime, where they had an 18-7 edge to put away the win.

Memphis, which had a lead for only 90 seconds in San Antonio, opened up with its trademark grit and grind defense, forcing eight turnovers in the first quarter to grab an 18-point lead. The Spurs quit turning the ball over and whittled away that lead to set up a doozy of a fourth quarter where the teams swapped the lead 11 times with 10 ties - all in the final 17 minutes.

"They went small real quick, and we couldn't contain the pick and roll ...," Gasol said. "It's painful to watch."

With neither team leading by more than two in the final 8 minutes of regulation, fans stayed on their feet, holding their "Believe Memphis" towels trying to will the Grizzlies to yet another win.

Ginobili scored seven of his 19 points in the quarter, and he put the Spurs back up first with a layup with 1:19 left and then a pair of free throws with 54.5 seconds remaining. But Ginobili also picked up his fourth foul, giving Tony Allen a chance to split free throws and tie it up at 86 for the ninth time. Ginobili then missed a 3-pointer with 20.9 seconds left with Allen getting the rebound.

With the Spurs taking control in their second straight overtime win in this series, they pushed their lead to as much as 11 down the stretch and sent fans heading toward the exits.

The Grizzlies lost for the first time at home this postseason and just their second since Feb. 8. Conley, who led the NBA in total steals this season, set the tone with a steal on the Spurs' first possession.

Parker, who set a career high in the postseason with 18 assists in Game 2, finished with seven turnovers. San Antonio turned it over eight times in the first, with the Grizzlies stealing seven of those, prompting Popovich to pull his starters and go with five fresh Spurs.

"It was one of the worst starts I've ever seen," Popovich said.

Memphis went up by as much as 18 and was ahead 29-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The Spurs opened the second quarter with an 11-2 run and hit 10 of their first 15 to pull within 42-36. The Grizzlies went into halftime up 44-40.

In the third, the Spurs pulled within a point six different times only to see the Grizzlies hit another bucket to hold onto the lead. San Antonio closed the quarter with a 12-4 run and trailed 65-64 on a bucket by Duncan.

The Spurs picked up in the fourth quarter and finally got their first lead of the game on a corner 3-pointer from Danny Green - his first bucket of the game - with 11:45 left to set up the back and forth quarter.

Notes: Duncan had his 144th postseason double-double, moving into second by himself behind Magic Johnson. ... Conley's five steals in the first quarter were the most in a quarter of a playoff game over the past 10 postseasons, according to Elias Sports Bureau. He finished with five turnovers. ... The Grizzlies had their 16th straight postseason sellout. ... The Spurs now have played five overtime periods this postseason, the most in franchise history. ... The Grizzlies are 1-2 in overtime games this postseason.

THE FACTS: The Spurs' Big 3 of Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili combined for 69 points as San Antonio beat Memphis 104-93 in overtime Saturday to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. Parker scored a game-high 26 points and Duncan had 24 points and 10 rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "We had maybe eight turnovers in the first quarter. It looked like those five guys (the starters) had been asleep since Tuesday, and so we thought we might as well get five different bodies out there and at least start to compete and not be as sloppy as that group looked."

-- San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich on replacing all five starters in the first quarter when the Spurs fell behind as many as 18 points.

THE STAT: The Spurs opened the game shooting 21.1 percent (4-for-19) in the first quarter and trailed the Grizzlies 29-13 heading into the second quarter. But they got going in the second period, shooting 64.7 percent (11-for-17) to pull to within 44-40 at the half. They also picked up their defense in the second quarter, holding Memphis to 30.4 percent (7-for-of 23) shooting after allowing the Grizzlies to shoot 48 percent (12-for-25) in the first quarter.

TURNING POINT: After watching the Spurs pull out of an 18-point hole to trail by two, the Grizzlies pushed their lead back to 61-52 late in the third quarter. But San Antonio again used a 12-4 run to close out the quarter, trailing just 65-64.

HOT: At 37, Duncan is determined to will his team back to the NBA Finals. After scoring six of his team's eight points in an overtime win in Game 2, Duncan had seven points in overtime Saturday, including the first five to give his team a lead it would not relinquish.

NOT: The Grizzlies will look to their horrendous free throw shooting as a reason they weren't able to close out the game in regulation. The Grizzlies were 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) from the free throw line, which included a pair of misses in the final 2:22 of regulation.

QUOTABLE II: "Yeah, it is frustrating, but it gives us hope at the same time, knowing that we can fight our way back, and we have had chances to win each one of these games. This one was a tough one to swallow. But it's a good learning lesson, and there's no group of guys I'd rather be with down 3-0 to try to fight back in it."

NOTABLE: Conley led the Grizzlies with 20 points, but missed a potential game-winner when this drive to the basket failed to go in, sending the game into overtime. He was 8-for-21 from the floor. ... Grizzlies' forward Zach Randolph continues to struggle, scoring 14 points on 5-for-14 shooting. He did have 15 rebounds. Marc Gasol had 16 points and 14 boards. ... The loss was the Grizzlies' first home loss in six playoff games this year. The Grizzlies have lost just twice at FedExForum since Feb. 8. ...
