Grizzlies-Spurs Preview

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) On the best playoff run in their short history, the Memphis Grizzlies refuse to be satisfied with just reaching their first Western Conference final.

The San Antonio Spurs? Well, they know time is running out for a team that has done so very much in the NBA playoffs yet last celebrated a championship in 2007.

Blowing a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals a year ago to Oklahoma City has driven the Spurs since training camp, and now they are back with Game 1 on Sunday against Memphis determined not to waste another chance.

"We understand as a team that those opportunities are very rare, and we have another great one right now," Spurs guard Tony Parker said Saturday. "We have home-court advantage against a very good team, so we have to take full advantage of it."

The Grizzlies are the former expansion franchise that started off in Vancouver before moving to Memphis, and they started by setting the NBA record for postseason futility while losing their first 12 playoff games.

Coach Lionel Hollins, who won an NBA title in 1977 as a player with Portland, has his Grizzlies believing they can win one, too. The No. 5 seed in the West ousted first the Clippers, then the Thunder by winning eight of its last nine games, including three of four on the road.

"We're just worried about going forward," Grizzlies guard Mike Conley said. "We're happy to be here, but we're still focused on bigger things, and we got another tough opponent."

That would be the Spurs with Tim Duncan, Parker and Manu Ginobili who swept the Grizzlies out of their first postseason in 2004. When Memphis finally won a postseason series, they beat the Spurs in six games in 2011, kicking off that series by winning the first game in San Antonio. Ginobili said the Spurs were not at their best that series and struggled to stop the Grizzlies' big men in Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph.

"We started with the wrong foot, we lost the first one and they got stronger and confident, and that's how they beat us," Ginobili said.

This conference final pits Southwest Division rivals, with the Spurs as the dominating big brother with their four NBA championships and the fifth-best all-time winning percentage in the league since this franchise moved to the NBA in 1976. No coach and player have more postseason games than San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich and Duncan with 200 over 16 seasons.

The Spurs clinched the No. 2 seed in the West winning just two more games than the Grizzlies.

This should be a defensive showdown between teams built around big men with Memphis countering Duncan with 7-foot-1 Gasol and Randolph down low. Memphis held teams to an NBA-low 89.3 points during the regular season, and the Spurs tied for third in defensive efficiency. The Grizzlies also were second defending the 3, which could slow down Parker and Ginobili.

"Finding ways to score is going to be very difficult," Popovich said. "Just playing against their defense is enough of a concern right off the bat."

Hollins said beauty will be in the eye of the beholder for this series.

"Some people think it's ugly, some people think it's beautiful," Hollins said. "I don't know. Don't really care."

Home court mattered during the regular season as these teams split with each winning on their own floor.

Remember when Popovich sent Duncan, Parker, Ginobili and Danny Green home to avoid playing the Heat in Miami on Nov. 29th? Well, that rest at the end of a six-game road trip cost the Spurs an unprecedented $250,000 fine. But the move paid off when the Spurs hosted the Grizzlies on Dec. 1 when Memphis was off to an NBA-best 12-2 start with a 99-95 win by San Antonio.

Three of the teams' matchups came before Memphis traded away Rudy Gay on Jan. 30. Memphis won the last game April 1 when Conley drove the lane for a layup and a 92-90 win on a night where Kawhi Leonard stayed in San Antonio with a sore left knee, Duncan sat out and Ginobili was out with a strained hamstring.

"It's going to be a tough series," Randolph said. "Every time we've played them it's a tough series. They got Ginobili, Parker, and they got a lot of other guys who do great things for the team."

San Antonio went 35-6 at home in the regular season, then swept the Lakers to open the playoffs. The Warriors tested that home-court advantage forcing the Spurs to go to overtime to pull out the first game of that series and did win Game 2. The Spurs won Game 5 at home before closing out the series Thursday night. That forces the Spurs into a quicker turnaround, even though they do get to start at home.

"I don't think you need any more challenge than playing in the conference finals and having the opportunity to go to the NBA Finals," Ginobili said. "Not that we needed that. It is big enough."

Memphis has been on a bit of a revenge tour this postseason. The Grizzlies ousted the Clippers in six after losing to Los Angeles in seven last year, then they made up for their 2011 Western semifinal loss to Oklahoma City by knocking off the defending Western champs in five games.

A key in this series will be Parker and Conley. Parker is averaging 22.4 points a game this postseason, while Conley is averaging a career-best 17.6 points while handing out 7.6 assists a game.

"He's the real key to their basketball team," Popovich said. "Everybody just thinks about Zach and Marc, who are sufficiently wonderful as players. But Conley is very, very important to that group."

They got an extra day of rest after Wednesday night's 88-84 win over the Thunder. Now they have geared up again focusing on defense, rebounding and trying to outscore an opponent in the paint, which already has worked so well this postseason.

"It's the same recipe," Gasol said. "It's just a little tougher."

Spurs rout Grizzlies 105-83 in West finals opener

SAN ANTONIO (AP) The San Antonio Spurs opened the Western Conference finals resembling the past champions who've been there so many times before.

The Memphis Grizzlies looked like the first-timers still trying to adapt to their first conference finals appearance.

Tony Parker had 20 points and nine assists, Kawhi Leonard scored 18 points and the Spurs struck first by beating Memphis 105-83 on Sunday.

San Antonio raced out to a 17-point lead in the first quarter, then came up with a response when Memphis rallied to get within six in the second half. Both teams pulled their starters with over 5 minutes left and the Spurs leading by 21.

"I can promise you this: Nobody's happy in our locker room, because we were up 2-0 (in the West finals) last year and we lost," Parker said. "It's just one game. It means nothing. We still have a long way to go."

The Spurs avoided a repeat of their Game 1 loss when the teams met two years ago in the first round. The Grizzlies went on to knock San Antonio out of the playoffs as the top seed that time.

Memphis has lost its opener in each round in this year's playoffs, recovering from an 0-2 hole in the first round against the Los Angeles Clippers and an 0-1 deficit against Oklahoma City in the West semifinals.

Game 2 is Tuesday night in San Antonio.

"We just didn't play well. It's not anything specific," coach Lionel Hollins said. "It's just that we were running too fast, we missed some layups, we were taking bad shots and our defense was really awful. And the Spurs played well."

The NBA's stingiest defense wasn't up to its usual standards, allowing the Spurs to hit 53 percent of their shots and a franchise postseason-record 14 3-pointers while All-Star power forward Zach Randolph struggled. Randolph had just two points, getting his only basket with 9:26 left in the game.

He had a playoff-best 28 points and 14 rebounds in his last game, as Memphis eliminated defending West champ Oklahoma City in Game 5 on Wednesday night.

"Obviously, he's their best scorer. He's a beast inside," Parker said. "We know he's not going to play like that every game. It's just sometimes it happens."

The Grizzlies started to rally as soon as Randolph came out of the game for the first time in the second half.

Quincy Pondexter made a baseline cut for a layup off Darrell Arthur's pass, then hit back-to-back 3-pointers during a 10-0 burst. Jerryd Bayless' two-handed, fast-break dunk off a steal got the Grizzlies within 62-56 with 3:43 left in the third quarter.

The comeback was short-lived, though.

Bayless missed a 3-pointer on the next trip, and Manu Ginobili was able to make one at the opposite end to spark an 11-1 response that immediately restored the Spurs' lead to 16 by end of the quarter. Leonard hit a pair of 3-pointers and Gary Neal had one as San Antonio kept pouring it on in the fourth.

The four regular-season meetings were all won by the team with more points in the paint, but perimeter shooting proved to be a bigger factor in the playoff opener. Memphis, which was second in the NBA by holding opponents to 33.8 shooting on 3-pointers, let San Antonio make 13 of its first 24 from behind the arc and finish 14 of 29.

Danny Green connected three times and scored 16, and Matt Bonner hit four of his five attempts for 12 points.

"We did a good job of moving the basketball, finding each other, trusting each other," Green said. "Luckily we made some today."

Pondexter led Memphis with 17 points, Marc Gasol scored 15 and Mike Conley had 14 points and eight assists.

"We were just so hyper, just running all over the place on defense," Hollins said. "We'd have four guys in the paint and nobody would be out on the perimeter guarding anybody. And that's not how we play defense."

The Spurs asserted themselves early, scoring on their first seven possessions and also getting a couple head-to-head defensive stops from their veterans while claiming a quick 23-8 lead. Parker swiped the ball from Conley on Memphis' second possession, running out for a layup, and Hollins burned a timeout in the first 2 minutes.

Tim Duncan snuffed out the ensuing play by blocking Randolph's shot, and the Spurs' strong start continued. Bonner hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 17-point edge late in the first quarter, and San Antonio pushed out to a 43-23 advantage following consecutive baskets by Parker with 6:06 left before halftime.

It was the largest first-half deficit for the Grizzlies during the playoffs.

"Every time we made a mistake defensively, they made us pay every time," Gasol said, who had three baskets in a push that helped Memphis get within 51-37 at halftime. "It was over-help or no help or whatever it was, they made you pay."

Notes: Memphis' only other deficit larger than 20 this postseason came in the first-round opener against the Los Angeles Clippers. L.A. didn't lead by 20 until the final minute of a 112-91 victory. ... Tracy McGrady got a standing ovation when he checked in with the Spurs up by 20 midway through the fourth quarter. ... The Spurs had 13 3-pointers in Game 1 of their second-round series against the Clippers in last year's playoffs.

THE FACTS: Tony Parker scored 20 points and had nine assists in 33 minutes to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 105-83 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday for a 1-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. Game 2 is Tuesday at AT&T Center.

Perhaps more significantly than Parker's game, Memphis' Zach Randolph had a career-low playoff performance by going 1-for-8 for two points in 28 minutes. He was averaging 19.7 points, 51-percent shooting and 14.7 shots per game in the playoffs. The Grizzlies, who also dropped Game 1 in the first round against the Clippers and the conference semis against Oklahoma City, had to reach to their bench for their most production. Quincy Pondexter hit five 3-pointers and ended the game with 17 points.

QUOTABLE: "It was just one of them nights. I've been double-teamed the whole season. A lot of my shots were off. I didn't get as good a look as I wanted to. It was just the rhythm of the game. I've got to be better, as I told my teammates. I've got to be better for them."

THE STAT: San Antonio outscored Memphis 42-15 from the 3-point line. The 14 field goals from 3-point distance is a Spurs franchise postseason record, and Memphis had been allowing opponents to hit an average of six 3-pointers per game in the playoffs.

TURNING POINT: The Grizzlies were behind by 17 midway through the third quarter but soon responded with 10 straight points. At one juncture, Pondexter nailed three-straight 3-pointers, and soon Memphis was down only 62-56 with 3:43 left in the quarter. But San Antonio immediately responded with an 11-1 run to end the third. It was a 16-point lead, and Memphis only got within 14 points after that.

QUOTABLE II: "Zach and Marc [Gasol] are a heck of a combination. Everything they do is real difficult to stick with, and you've got to have a mindset to do it on every down. I thought we did the best job we could do."

HOT: With apologies to Pondexter (5-for-9 from the 3-point line), the Spurs outscored Memphis by 27 points from the 3-point line because Kawhi Leonard went 4-for-5, Matt Bonner 4-for-6 and Danny Green 3-for-6.

NOT: Randolph's 1-for-8 performance with two points is his worst career playoff performance while playing at least 10 minutes. He had "off" games when the Grizzlies defeated San Antonio in the first round two years ago, but nothing like this. His Game 4 performance two years ago (3-for-7, 11 points, nine rebounds) is the closest.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Parker was headed to a double-double before this game got out of hand and the benches were emptied with 5:14 to go and San Antonio ahead by 22. He's scored double figures in each playoff game this year (22.2 average) and has had at least eight assists in five of the games.

GOOD MOVE: The Spurs allowed Manu Ginobili to take over when the game got close and Memphis was down by six late in the third quarter. In the final 2:47 of the third, Ginobili hit a 3-pointer, drove the lane and drew a foul on Gasol. He then made a free throw, made dribble penetration and kicked a pass back out to Bonner for a 3 and scored on a driving layup when the Grizzlies inexplicably left the lane wide open with 13 seconds to go.

BAD MOVE: The Grizzlies fell into another Game 1 funk with lack of energy and execution that led to a 31-14 deficit after the first quarter. Just as bad, Memphis watched as San Antonio grabbed the first six rebounds of the game. The Spurs were outrebounded easily by Golden State in the conference semifinals, yet the Grizzlies didn't get a rebound until almost six minutes into the game.

ROOKIE WATCH: Tony Wroten got two minutes during garbage time for Memphis and missed his only shot of the game.

NOTABLE: Bonner hit a pair of 3-pointers during the Spurs' 31-14 first quarter, and that's as many as he hit during the entire six-game series against Golden State. ... Ed Davis played three minutes in Memphis' entire series with Oklahoma City, yet he played five minutes in the first half alongside Gasol after Randolph opened 0-for-3. ... Tracy McGrady, roundly applauded when he entered the game late for San Antonio, missed a pair of 3-pointers and has yet to score in four brief playoff appearances for the Spurs.
