Grizzlies-Thunder Preview

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies are showing a knack for closing out tight games against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

All that's left to prove is whether they can finish off a playoff series that's been nip and tuck throughout and move on to the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history.

In each of the first three games of the series, the go-ahead bucket was scored in the final 2 minutes. Then Game 4 went to overtime, with Memphis winning 103-97 to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series and put the Thunder on the brink of elimination. Game 5 is Wednesday night in Oklahoma City.

"It's not like any of the games that it was handed to us. Every game has been right down to the last 2 minutes," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said Tuesday as both teams took the day off. "That gives you hope."

For Kevin Durant and Oklahoma City, a once-promising season now comes down to desperation time. Without injured All-Star Russell Westbrook, the Thunder need to win three in a row if they hope to reach the West finals for a third straight season or make their second straight trip to the NBA Finals.

For his career, Durant is 1-3 when facing elimination. The only win came in Game 7 against Memphis two seasons ago in the West semifinals.

"One thing about Kevin, he's going to come back and give everything he has," Brooks said. "He's not an excuse guy. He's not going to blame anything on nobody, other than put the pressure on himself to perform every night. That's what makes us a good team, because of that attitude that he has."

Durant has had to do it all since Westbrook had knee surgery prior to Game 3 of the first round of the playoffs. He's averaging 30.8 points, 11 rebounds and 6.8 assists in this round, and also hit all the key shots down the stretch in the Thunder's Game 1 victory.

But over time, Memphis - the league's top defensive team in the regular season - has made it harder for Durant to excel with the game on the line. After going 10 for 16 from the field with 22 points in the fourth quarter of the first two games, Durant has gone 3 for 17 and scored seven points in the fourth quarter in Games 3 and 4 plus overtime on Monday night.

His shooting percentage in crunch time has gone down in each game.

"We've just got to find a way to make those plays. We're playing hard every day. It's just not going our way," Durant said. "We just have to get ready for Game 5. It's at home, so it should be exciting. I'm looking forward to it."

While Oklahoma City is at risk of bowing out, the Grizzlies are one win away from the next big step in their progression as a franchise. Before this season, they had won only one postseason series, against San Antonio in 2011.

"It's still a game. Still we have to play another game, and we have to win another game. There's no greater magnitude," coach Lionel Hollins said. "It's just a game that we have to go out and play well to win. It's just like when were down 0-1, just like when we were 1-1, just like when we were 2-1. It never changes. It's a game that has to be played to the best of your ability and the winning and losing takes care of itself."

With two teams that have been so closely matched, there don't figure to be any more major adjustments at this point. Brooks was happy with his decision to have power forward Serge Ibaka guard 7-footer Marc Gasol instead of counterpart Zach Randolph, given that Ibaka emerged from a shooting slump for 17 points and 14 rebounds.

"I think it loosened him up, just his mind, so he can focus on what he does well. We need his scoring, we need his shooting and I thought last game was good," Brooks said. "Hopefully we can get it again."

It still wasn't enough to change the final result - the third straight Memphis win by exactly six points.

"As hard as they came out on us (Monday) night, they're going to come out even harder when they get home. It's desperation for them," Hollins said. "And we can't anticipate or think that it's going to be an easy game. We have to go out and be ready for a heavyweight battle."

Brooks said the three straight losses haven't changed his team's mindset, which remains "we expect to win and if we don't, it'll be disappointing." And he doesn't want the win-or-else mentality to create mounting pressure on his players.

"The pressure is not to make every shot. The pressure is just to compete as hard as you can for your team, and wherever that takes you, you live with it," he said. "I think our guys are ready to commit to one more great effort game, and we're looking forward to it."

After the loss Monday night, Brooks had a light-hearted moment and mentioned knowing that there's a barbecue festival in Memphis on Friday, when Game 6 would be played.

"We want to be able to win in front of our home fans and have another game in Memphis and see what we can do there. I like our ability to come back in tough situations, within games and even to the next game. This is obviously not the greatest position to be in but we still have a chance to be a part of history," Brooks said.

"There's not a lot of teams that have come back from 3-1 but we have the talent, we have the teamwork, we have the effort and teamwork to do it."

Grizzlies edge Thunder 88-84, reach 1st West final

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) With their trademark grit-and-grind mentality, the Memphis Grizzlies are making history for a franchise with little prior postseason success.

Zach Randolph had 28 points and 14 rebounds, Mike Conley added 13 points and 11 assists and the fifth-seeded Grizzlies advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history by beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 88-84 on Wednesday night.

"This is the first time, so it definitely means a lot. I'm happy, but we've still got work to do," Randolph said. "I want to win a ring."

The Grizzlies, who got swept out of the playoffs in their first three trips and had won just one postseason series before this season, have already made it farther than ever before but still aren't satisfied.

"We're trying to do something really special. We want to go as far as we can go," coach Lionel Hollins said. "To get there, we had to get through Oklahoma City. And now, we have to get through either Golden State or San Antonio to get further."

In a series filled with games that went down to the wire, the finale fit right in - even though the Thunder trailed by 12 with 3 minutes left.

Kevin Durant missed a 16-foot jumper from the left wing to tie it with 6 seconds left, finishing off a miserable shooting night for the three-time NBA scoring champion. Durant ended up with 21 points on 5-for-21 shooting, the third-worst performance of his playoff career.

"I gave it all I had for my team. I left it all out there on the floor," Durant said. "I missed 16 shots, but I kept fighting, I kept being aggressive. That's all I can ask for."

The Thunder, who made it to the NBA Finals last season, were eliminated in five games. The top seed in the West went 2-6 after All-Star guard Russell Westbrook had knee surgery two games into the first round.

"I believe in our guys. I'm disappointed we didn't win this series. I felt that we were good enough to win this series," coach Scott Brooks said.

Serge Ibaka had 17 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with 1:26 to play during a desperation comeback try for the Thunder. Reggie Jackson's 3-pointer finished off the 16-6 rally, cutting the deficit to 86-84 with 14.3 seconds remaining.

Randolph missed both free throws with 11.3 seconds on the clock to give the Thunder one last chance to save their season. Durant got the ball beyond the 3-point line on the left wing and navigated around Tony Allen before missing the jumper.

"That's the shot that we wanted. ... That's the shot I will live with 100 times out of 100 times," Brooks said.

Allen got the rebound, was fouled and made two free throws to close it out.

After letting a 14-point lead get trimmed to two, the Grizzlies regained control with a 12-2 run to start the fourth quarter and go up 76-64 with 6:03 remaining. Randolph had seven points during the stretch, including five from the foul line.

It was just a big enough cushion to finish off a series of games that all came down to the wire. The first three games featured a go-ahead basket in the final two minutes, and Game 4 went to overtime. Memphis won the final four games.

"They fought hard, they did everything that they could. Tonight, they really came back in the second half and just kept coming, kept coming," Hollins said. "We just were fortunate to just make enough plays to win the game. That's the way we've been all year, but we'll take it. They battled us and gave us everything they had."

The Thunder fell to 1-4 in elimination games over the past four seasons. Two of Durant's worst performances came in those games, with a 5-for-23 outing against the Lakers in Game 6 of the 2010 first-round. His worst shooting performance in the postseason was against the Grizzlies in Game 6 of the 2011 West semifinals.

Durant played all 48 minutes.

"He wasn't going down. He didn't want to sit and watch and go down," Brooks said. "He wanted to play."

Oklahoma City got a breath of life with a bizarre play midway through the third quarter when Derek Fisher's missed 3-pointer turned into a four-point possession. Allen, who was on the bench, waved his arms to try and distract Fisher on his shot and a shirt slipped out of his hands and onto the floor near Fisher's feet.

Referee Marc Davis ruled that Fisher's 3-pointer should count, and Durant hit the free throw resulting from a technical against Allen to get the Thunder within 60-53. Oklahoma City got as close as 64-62 by the end of the quarter, after Fisher's 3-pointer and a layup by Thabo Sefolosha.

But the Thunder missed eight of their first nine shots to start the fourth quarter to fall behind by 12, then couldn't quite recover with their star struggling so badly.

"He really wanted to carry his team. He was back home, he was trying to get a win tonight and he came out really trying," Hollins said. "Throughout the course of the series, we just tried to put pressure on him, keep fresh bodies on him. ... They had to play him and he had to be the go-to guy, and we knew that. We just tried to just make him work for everything."

Notes: NBA Commissioner David Stern attended the game and sat eight rows from the court. ... Sefolosha wore a brace on his sore left hand. He played just six minutes in the first half, then played the entire third quarter. ... It was the second straight game the Thunder scored the first seven points, only to give up the lead a few minutes later. ... Nick Collison picked up three fouls in the first 2:35 of the second quarter and got pulled. ... After the third-quarter buzzer, Jerryd Bayless made a shot from three-quarters court that did not count.

Notebook: Grizzlies 88, Thunder 84

THE FACTS: Memphis forward Zach Randolph had a monster game with 28 points and 14 rebounds and he and his teammates smothered Kevin Durant with stifling defense in leading the Grizzlies to an 88-84 win over the Thunder and on into the Western Conference finals.

It will be the Grizzlies first appearance in the conference finals and the Grizzlies had to withstand a furious Oklahoma City rally in the closing minutes to get past the Thunder.

Durant suffered through one of his worst shooting nights, missing his first six shots of the game and finishing just 5-for-21 (23.8 percent) for 21 points, 11 of those coming at the free throw line. Durant also missed his last shot of the game, a potential game-tying jumper from about 15 feet. His Thunder teammates didn't fare much better shooting 36.9 percent overall and just 24 percent on threes.

The Grizzlies didn't have many shots fall either shooting 37 percent. In addition to Randolph's 28 points, the Grizzlies got 13 from point guard Mike Conley, who also handed out 11 assists, 11 from defensive whiz Tony Allen and 10 from center Marc Gasol.

The Thunder also had four players in double figures. In addition to the 21 from Durant, forward Serge Ibaka had his second straight game with 17 points, he also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Reggie Jackson, starting at point guard in place of injured All-Star Russell Westbrook, had 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists and sixth man Kevin Martin added 10 points.

QUOTABLE: "Every game had a chance to go to the other team. Tonight they came back in the second half and just kept coming and coming, we just made enough plays to win. Zach was huge the whole game, he came out snortin' and gruntin' the whole game."

QUOTABLE II: "We came up short, Memphis made it tough on us all series. That last play I was just trying to get an open look and I had one, but my shot was too long. It's tough to lose your last game in the playoffs and down the road we'll probably look back on this and appreciate these tough times. Sometimes you gotta ride out the storms to get to the sunshine."

THE STAT: Neither team shot well, rebounds were about even (45-44 Memphis), OKC had more points in the paint (38-36) and more second chance points (16-11) but the biggest difference was again in points off turnovers. The Thunder turned the ball over 14 times and the Grizzlies took advantage scoring 22 points off the givebacks. Memphis turned it over just 10 times and OKC could only score nine points.

TURNING POINT: After OKC ended the third quarter on a 16-4 run to bring the game back to within two points the Grizzlies responded with a 10-2 run to start the fourth and give them back most of the breathing room they had lost. The Thunder roared back one last time getting to within two points but Durant's shot attempt to tie the game was long, his 16th miss of the night.

QUOTABLE III: "We didn't lose the game because one guy didn't shoot the ball well, we lost the game because they were a little bit better than us."

HOT: Randolph was 5-for-10 (16 points) at halftime and finished 8-for-17 (28 points).

NOT: Defense again dominated at the start of the game, Memphis began 4-for-10 (40 percent) and Oklahoma City started 4-for-11 (36.4 percent)...Durant missed his first six shots and finished the first quarter 1-for-8 (four points) and was 2-for-11 (12 points) at halftime...OKC shot 32.5 percent in the first half...Memphis shot 37.5 percent...Gasol was 1-for-6 (two points) at the break...Derek Fisher was 3-for-11, all threes...Tayshaun Prince was 3-for-13.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The 113th consecutive sellout inside Chesapeake Energy Arena. NBA Commissioner David Stern was in the crowd along with "super fan" Jimmy Goldstein.

GOOD MOVE: Hollins wanted his defenders to be aggressive with Durant, "we just tried to put pressure on him and make him work for everything he got," he said. It worked, especially late in games when Durant seemed to tire. In the fourth quarter, Durant was just 1-for-5 (two points).

BAD MOVE: Late in the second quarter, Thunder center Kendrick Perkins was open in the lane and hollered at Durant to pass him the ball. Durant instead kept the ball, took a shot and missed. The ball went out of bounds, Durant and Perkins had a quick conversation and when the ball was inbounded to Durant he passed to Perkins this time who was again open for a moment in the lane. He drove in and short-armed his shot, the ball bouncing off the rim and into the arms of the Grizzlies. At that point in the series Perkins was just 10-for-37 (27 percent).

BAD MOVE, TOO: Too many times, Durant has been swarmed by Memphis defenders while other Thunder players ddidn't do much on offense except stand around and watch. Not much ball movement and not enough screens being set to try to spring Durant or anyone else.

BAD MOVE III: Grizzlies guard Tony Allen, waving a towel on the bench, accidentally tossed the towel onto the floor as Fisher was shooting a 3-pointer in the third quarter. The officials assessed a technical foul on Allen and gave the basket to the Thunder, resulting in a four-point play.

NOTABLE: This will be the Grizzlies' first ever trip to the Western Conference finals...Durant has now recorded 20 or more points in 37 straight playoff games...OKC was just 3-6 in the postseason without Westbrook.
