Knicks-Pacers Preview

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - New York coach Mike Woodson believes whole-heartedly that Amare Stoudemire can make a difference against the Pacers.

He's big, strong, and, when healthy, a proficient scorer - three ingredients the Knicks, who could be without J.R. Smith, can use Saturday night.

The problem is Stoudemire hasn't played in an NBA game in more than two months and will now try to work his way back into game shape during the Eastern Conference semifinals. It's a risky move, one Woodson insists is worth the gamble given the potential payoff of breaking a 1-1 series and reclaiming home-court advantage in Game 3 of this best-of-seven series as it shifts to Indianapolis.

"If I didn't think Amare was important to our team, then I wouldn't even consider that," the Knicks coach said after Friday's practice. "But Amare can still play, and I think he proved that in the short time he was back this last time."

On paper, it looks like a no-brainer.

Stoudemire gives the Knicks more scoring punch against one of the league's stingiest defenses and another big body against a Pacers team that led the NBA in rebounding during the regular season and has been the best in the playoffs, too.

What's the downside?

Without Stoudemire, limited to 29 games this season after surgeries on each knee, New York has still found ways to win. The Knicks clinched the second seed in the East and won their first playoff series in 13 years, including a 26-point win over Indiana in Game 2 to even this series.

And it's still not clear how effective Stoudemire can be. Woodson has already said he will limit his star forward to 10 or 15 minutes Saturday night, just long enough to force the team to change its rotations and potentially upset the chemistry of a group that's played pretty well during Stoudemire's absence.

Conventional wisdom suggests that putting a player like Stoudemire back in the lineup should provide an immediate boost. The Knicks agree.

"He gives us another scorer, gives us another big guy," Knicks guard Raymond Felton said. "This is a big team we're playing against, so any time we can get one of our bigs back, especially with him because he's a great scorer, we know it's going to help us."

But Indiana fans know that's not always the case.

Exhibit A came during the 1996 NBA playoffs. Near the end of the regular season, Reggie Miller fractured his eye socket and missed the first four games of the best-of-five, first-round series against Atlanta. He returned in Game 5, wearing goggles, and scored 29 points. But the Pacers, who had figured out how to win without Miller, got out of sync and wound up losing the decisive game 89-87.

Exhibit B came during the 2007 NFL playoffs. Colts fans figured a rougher than usual season would be resolved when Peyton Manning got sure-handed receiver Marvin Harrison back for an AFC Divisional Round game. Instead, after sitting out three months with an injury, Harrison fumbled the ball the first time he was hit. The defending Super Bowl champs lost 28-24 to a San Diego team that finished the game without its starting quarterback or No. 1 running back.

Pacers coach Frank Vogel nearly faced a similar choice in late March when the Pacers appeared to be struggling and injured swingman Danny Granger was still trying to recover from a left knee injury. He was asked then about letting Granger play his way into shape during the playoffs. Vogel indicated then that it wouldn't be an ideal situation. About a week later, Granger had surgery on his left knee and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Indiana's players understood the reasoning.

"I don't think it's something easy to do," Pacers point guard George Hill said when asked about dealing with rustiness. "You have to get back into a rhythm and in shape. It takes you five minutes to get out of shape, but probably a year to get in shape."

Trying to do that during the pressure-packed playoffs, Hill acknowledged, only makes the process of fitting in that much tougher.

"Definitely so. Your team had a rhythm and things like that and things are flowing," Hill said.

If Stoudemire does return Saturday night, as expected, he will join a team that is busting with confidence.

The Knicks shot better in Game 2, were more productive inside and went toe-to-toe with the Pacers' big men. Defensively, New York held Indiana scoreless for the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter and seized control with a 30-2 run, winning its most lopsided playoff game since April 24, 1992.

"I'm not going to risk what we've been doing, but I am going to play him, just to see where he is in terms of, I think if he is where he needs to be," Woodson said of Stoudemire. "He didn't play big minutes the first go around before he got hurt and his minutes will definitely be limited this go around."

New York's even bigger star, NBA scoring champ Carmelo Anthony, has promised neither he nor the Knicks will back down from the physical Pacers.

Not now, and certainly not with Stoudemire around to help out.

The Pacers wouldn't expect anything less.

"Our defense is designed to put our guys in position to stay home on shooters," Vogel said. "In terms of Amare, if you close your eyes or blink on Amare Stoudemire, he's dunking on you. It's just going to have to heighten our alertness on those guys."

The Knicks, however, might be without Smith after he missed the morning shootaround because of a fever. Woodson says the guard stayed at the team hotel with a fever of about 102 degrees

Smith averaged 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds during the regular season and won the NBA's Sixth Man Award. But his playoff numbers are down to 14.4 points and 4.7 rebounds, and he's just 7 of 30 from the field and scoring only 25 points in the first two games against Indiana.

Pacers protect home court, beat Knicks 82-71

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers kept everything in front of them Saturday night.

The Pacers didn't let the Knicks get away from them on fast breaks, didn't let the Knicks get good 3-point looks and didn't even give New York a chance to challenge late.

Instead, Roy Hibbert, Paul George and Indiana showed what it can do when it plays its game.

Hibbert finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while George nearly came up with another postseason triple double, leading the Pacers to a crucial 82-71 Game 3 victory and a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals.

"That's how we play Pacers basketball," George said. "We just locked in, and it was just helping one another on the defensive end."

Sure, Indiana could have been sidetracked by the embarrassing 26-point loss at New York in Game 2. Or it could have gotten caught up in the pregame banter about Amare Stoudemire's impending return or J.R Smith's sudden illness.

But the Pacers never got distracted.

Coach Frank Vogel's bunch followed the same game plan it has all season -- locking down defensively, winning the rebounding battle and protecting its home court.

Check, check and check.

Indiana limited the Knicks to 35.2 percent shooting from the floor, allowed just three 3-pointers and forced 15 turnovers. And, of course, the league's No. 1 rebounding team dominated the glass again, finishing with a 53-40 rebounding edge and a 20-10 edge in second-chance points.

It was enough to allow the Pacers to overcome a 28 for 80 shooting performance that included a season-high 33 3-point attempts.

"They outrebounded us, they won the hustle today, the little things," Carmelo Anthony said. "It all came down to us not scoring the basketball. ... We can't beat anyone scoring 71 points."

It's the same formula Indiana won Game 1, and now, if Indiana wins a fifth straight home playoff game Tuesday night, it will head back to Madison Square Garden with a commanding lead over a longtime rival.

How did the Pacers do it again? They relied on scoring balance and in-your-face defense.

HIbbert kept loose balls alive in his best playoff performance of this postseason. Vogel called it his best playoff game ever.

George struggled to score, finishing with 14 points, but he also finished had eight rebounds and eight assists and caused plenty of consternation for Anthony and others on defense.

David West got off to a slow start but finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds and George Hill knocked down five 3s and he finished with 17 points.

"We didn't change much in terms of our physicality," West said. "I just thought we were a little bit more precise defensively in terms of our communication and we shored some things up. We didn't allow them to get some of the things they got in the second game in New York."

The Knicks had only one player in double figures. Carmelo Anthony scored 21, but the NBA scoring champion went j6 of 16 from the field, managed only two points and no baskets in the fourth quarter and finished well below his playoff scoring average of 29.3.

He was hardly alone.

Smith gave it a go although his shooting woes continued. He went 4 of 12, scored nine points and walked directly to locker room when he was replaced midway through the fourth quarter. A few minutes later, he came back into the game and is now just 11 of 42 from the field in the series.

Stoudemire looked rusty in his return, making just 3 of 8 eight shots -- one a dunk, another on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the third quarter -- and finished with seven points and two rebounds.

The Knicks led once in the game, for just 76 seconds, and barely escaped the ignominy of setting a franchise playoff record for fewest points in a game. The all-time low is 67. New York didn't hit 68 until Kenyon Martin's dunk with 1:39 to play.

"Offensively, we just didn't have anything," coach Mike Woodson said. "I thought defensively, we hung in there and did what we had had to do, but we just didn't have any offensive pop and we have to figure that out."

And fast or the second-seeded Knicks will spend the rest of this series playing catch-up.

New York had a chance midway through the third quarter when it closed the deficit to 44-41. But instead of faltering, as the Pacers did in Game 2, they thrived on New York's miscues.

When Tyson Chandler was called for his third foul, he lost his cool and was whistled for a technical foul. That allowed the Pacers to score three points on the possession. West followed that with a 19-foot jumper and after Chandler went 1-of-2 from the free throw line, Indiana seized control with a 9-0 run that made it 58-44.

Stoudemire's buzzer-beater to end the quarter got the Knicks within 62-51 and New York eventually got as close as 65-57 with 9:10 left. But Indiana answered with seven straight points and never let the Knicks challenge again.

"Our guys usually do what you emphasize," Vogel said. "We don't want to do it at the expense of giving up things up at the rim. But we were able to guard the paint and the 3-point line, and that's the goal."

Notes: The Pacers are 4-0 at home with an average victory margin of 16.5 points. ... New York is now 0-3 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse this season. ... THE FACTS: On a night when offense was difficult to come by for both teams, Roy Hibbert's postseason career-high 24-point performance was the difference-maker, leading Indiana to an 82-71 Game 3 victory over visiting New York on Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Semifinal series. Indiana's defense held New York, the most prolific 3-point shooting team in NBA history, to season lows in 3-pointers made (three) and attempted (11) as the Knicks shot just 35.2 percent from the field. The Pacers shot just 35 percent but had a 53-40 advantage on the boards that included 18 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second-chance points. Carmelo Anthony led New York with 21 points, but none of his teammates managed to reach double figures.

QUOTABLE: "I think this is his best playoff game ever, probably. He's oozing confidence."

THE STAT: Indiana attempted a season-high 33 3-pointers, making 10. In the series, the Pacers have six more 3-pointers made than the Knicks.

TURNING POINT: Hibbert and West combined for eight of the points in an 11-1 run that pushed Indiana's lead to 58-44 late in the third quarter. The Knicks closed to 65-57 early in the fourth quarter but Hibbert scored twice more in a 10-3 counter that made it 75-60 with 4:52 remaining and there would be no further threats from the Knicks.

HOT: Hibbert (9-for-18) and Knicks counterpart Tyson Chandler (3-for-4) were the only starters for either team to hit at least half their shots. ... George Hill was 5-for-12 from the 3-point line for Indiana.

NOT: Anthony missed 10 of his 16 shots and committed four turnovers against just one assist. ... George shot 4-for-17 overall, 2-for-12 from the 3-point line. ...
