Thunder-Rockets Preview

HOUSTON (AP) Kevin Durant has scored 74 points combined in Oklahoma City's past two games against the Houston Rockets.

The problem is that his teammates haven't stepped up to take some pressure off the superstar, and the Rockets have won both of those games.

Houston has cut the Thunder's lead to 3-2 in the series, and is looking to become the first team in NBA history to overcome a 0-3 series deficit to win a best-of-seven playoff series.

They'll likely continue to send two or three defenders at Durant and dare other players to beat them in Game 6 Friday night in Houston.

Though it hasn't happened in the past two games, Thunder coach Scott Brooks is confident Durant will get more scoring help on Friday.

"We're getting open shots," Brooks said. "If we can get those same open shots, I feel very confident our guys are going to step up and hit those shots. Those are the same shots that they've made their entire careers."

Rockets coach Kevin McHale raved about Durant and said they'll continue to try different looks to slow him down, even if it means leaving other capable scorers unguarded.

"When you double team a guy at the top of the key where he has the ball a lot, someone's going to be open," he said. "You've just got to take the temperature of what's happening and how hot you think Durant is ... and you've just got to sometimes live with it."

While Oklahoma City is without All-Star Russell Westbrook for the rest of the season, the Rockets are dealing with several health issues as well. Point guard Jeremy Lin has missed the past two games with a bruised chest muscle. His status for Friday's game is still up in the air, but McHale said he was feeling better Thursday.

Carlos Delfino's status is also questionable after not playing in the second half because of a sore left foot. The Rockets also said on Thursday that star James Harden had been diagnosed with strep throat, but was expected to play on Friday.

He bounced back from a tough performance in Game 4 to score 31 points on Wednesday to lead Houston to the 107-100 win.

McHale was impressed with Harden's work on Wednesday, especially considering he was struggling with his illness and lacked his normal energy.

"Every day is not perfect," McHale said. "Being in that situation and having some tough games, it bothers you and you're bound and determined to come back the next night and play better."

The Rockets were also helped in Game 5 by the Thunder's decision to intentionally foul 7-foot center Omer Asik for an almost two-minute span in the fourth quarter. The career 54 percent shooter made 8 of 12 free throws to push the lead to 101-92 before Oklahoma City gave up on that plan.

Brooks said they did it because the team wasn't playing good defense and he hoped to change the rhythm of the game.

"I thought that would give us a chance," Brooks said. "Unfortunately, he stepped up. Give him credit ... something I go back on, we have to play better defense. We don't want to get into that if we don't have to. We would rather play the way we want to play, solid defense for 48 minutes."

McHale called Asik's free throw shooting a big part of the Rockets win, and said that he'd got some tutoring in the area from former Houston assistant coach and general manager Carroll Dawson.

"He practices them all the time," McHale said. "He's been doing a great job. Earlier in the fall, Carroll Dawson really worked with him on changing his technique a little bit. He's been working on it and working on it and he's getting more confident."

Some Houston players were irked at Durant for saying "hack-a-whatever-his-name-is" when referring to the tactic on Asik.

"He knew his name," Chandler Parsons said. "The guy has had two double doubles in a row. He's one of the best centers in the NBA. He knows his name. If he didn't know, he does for sure now."

Brooks wasn't as concerned about his tactic on Asik not working as he was about why his team keeps struggling on defense in the third quarter. Houston scored 38 points in the third quarter of Game 4 and 37 points on Wednesday night.

"I know that's not who we are because it hasn't been who we are for a lot of years," Brooks said.

The Rockets insist that they're just having fun and that all the pressure is on top-seeded Oklahoma City, because as the eight-seed they weren't expected to win.

"In our minds still nobody's giving us a shot," Parsons said. "But it doesn't really matter, it matters what we believe in that locker room and that we believe in ourselves. We're fully confident that we're going to win tomorrow night and we're going to take the series."

Since most of these young Rockets don't have much playoff experience, they've been leaning on the vast experience of McHale, who won three titles in the 1980s with the Celtics. He doesn't discuss Houston's chance to make history with this young team, he just asks his players to focus on the next game.

"Anything could happen, that's the beautiful thing about basketball," he said. "That's why you go play. What happened in the past doesn't make any difference. We had great effort last night and we just need great effort again."

Of course, the Thunder, who reached the NBA Finals last season, aren't lacking in confidence either.

Oklahoma City's players weren't available on Thursday, but Kendrick Perkins made it clear that he believes the Thunder are in control of the series with a tweet that included a link to his Boston Celtics championship ring.

"You think we stressed out right now," he asked on Twitter. "Y'all crazy we got heart over here in OKC."

Then he tweeted again.

"If the playoffs was meant to be easy then everybody could win a ring," he tweeted. "We up 3-2 and we not looking back. Great position to be in."

Thunder beat Rockets 103-94 to advance

HOUSTON (AP) Kevin Durant texted Kevin Martin after his terrible performance in Game 5 to send words of encouragement, and tell him he knew Martin would bounce back on Friday night.

Durant couldn't have been more right, and the Oklahoma City Thunder are advancing in the NBA playoffs.

Durant scored 27 points and Martin added 25 to lead the Thunder to a 103-94 victory over the Houston Rockets, sending them to the second round for the third straight season.

The Thunder will host Memphis on Sunday afternoon.

Martin, who joined the Thunder in the trade for James Harden, rebounded from a tough Game 5. He missed his first nine shots Wednesday and finished with three points. Things were much difference in Game 6, when he had 21 points by halftime.

"I had faith that he was going to come out and be aggressive and have a really good game," Durant said of Martin. "He's a big-time scorer. He carried us in that first half when I was struggling."

The Rockets were looking to become just the fourth team in NBA history to force a Game 7 after trailing 3-0.

But the Thunder opened the fourth quarter with a big run to take the lead and cruise to the victory.

Martin finally gave the Thunder someone to take scoring pressure off Durant for the first time since All-Star guard Russell Westbrook had season-ending knee surgery. He had 21 points by halftime and Westbrook's replacement, Reggie Jackson, helped out by scoring 17.

"It was just coming in there, trying to set a tone," Martin said. "The last 48 hours after Game 5, I couldn't even look my teammates in the eye because I felt so bad. It was going in there and playing like I have been in my career and jump-starting us to a victory."

Jackson also had seven rebounds, eight assists and just two turnovers.

"That was one of our best Thunder team wins that we've had all season," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "The guys really laid everything on the line, and that's what playoff basketball is all about. That's what team basketball is all about, and I liked the guys' commitment to helping each other out."

Durant, who also had eight rebounds and six assists, likes the way the team has grown in the four games since Westbrook was injured.

"It's making us stronger," he said of dealing with adversity. "We definitely had to come together. We struggled at times, but that's all part of the journey."

Harden, who the Rockets said had strep throat on Thursday, led Houston with 26 points.

Oklahoma City used a 14-4 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter to take a 92-81 lead. Derek Fisher and Durant both hit 3-pointers in that stretch. Houston missed six shots, including two layups, and had two turnovers as the Thunder built the lead.

Harden made a 3-pointer after that, but Fisher stole the ball from him on the next possession and Durant finished with an exclamation-point dunk, and Houston didn't threaten after that.

"We were just stagnant and from there on out we couldn't get any movement and really couldn't get any shots off," Harden said.

Brooks said the importance of Fisher to his team couldn't be overstated.

"He has made our team better," Brooks said. "His spirit of doing it every day is something all teams should strive for. What I saw tonight was some of the most inspired play I've ever seen as a player and as a coach."

Fisher finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals.

The Rockets' plan of double- and triple-teaming Durant and daring someone else to beat them worked in the previous two games as they cut the deficit to 3-2. On Friday, Martin knocked down shot after shot and had outscored Durant by 12 points by halftime.

Houston got 25 points from Chandler Parsons, while Omer Asik had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

"I'm at a loss for words right now," Houston's Patrick Beverley said. "My mind is set to play Game 7. It's frustrating right now."

Houston opened the third quarter with a barrage of 3-pointers. Francisco Garcia sank one to start the period and Parsons hit three more to help the Rockets build a 68-62 lead with about 7 1/2 minutes left in the quarter.

The Rockets pushed the lead to 10 points a couple of minutes later before Jackson scored five quick points to get Oklahoma City within 72-67.

That was the beginning of a 10-2 spurt for the Thunder that helped them tie it at 74 on a putback by Durant with about three minutes remaining in the quarter. Oklahoma City led 78-77 entering the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma City limited Houston to 23 points in the third period Friday after allowing the Rockets to score 38 and 37 points, respectively, in the third quarters of the last two games.

Houston was playing without key reserve Carlos Delfino, who has a bone fracture in his right foot that will require surgery.

Jeremy Lin didn't start, but played for the first time since Game 3. He entered with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter. He had missed the last two games with a bruised chest muscle.

He had just three points.

Houston led by five points late in the first quarter before Oklahoma City used a 12-2 run to take a 36-31 lead about nine minutes before halftime. Fisher and Martin made consecutive 3s to cap that run.

Martin made a pair of free throws to finish his big first half before Harden swished a 3-pointer to cut Oklahoma City's lead to 58-54 at halftime.

Things got testy early, with Garcia and Kendrick Perkins pushing each other after a foul by Garcia and each getting technical fouls in the first quarter. Garcia simmered down pretty quickly, but Perkins had to be pulled away by teammates.

After things settled down, Perkins inexplicably dropped to the court and did several push-ups.

Another scuffle just before halftime resulted in technicals on both Asik and Durant.

NOTES: The game drew a sold-out crowd of 18,357. ... Parsons scored more than 25 points for his second straight game. ... Martin came one point shy of his career high for points in the playoffs of 26. ... The Thunder went 16 for 16 from the free throw line.

THE FACTS: Kevin Durant's teammates stepped up in a big way to help the Oklahoma City Thunder close out their first-round Western Conference series with the Houston Rockets with a 103-94 victory Friday at Toyota Center.

Durant scored 27 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists to pace six double-figure scorers for Oklahoma City, which limited Houston to only 40 points on 32.4 percent (12-for-37) shooting overall after halftime to take the series 4-2. Kevin Martin added 25 points on 7-for-13 shooting, while Reggie Jackson poured in 17 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed seven boards. Martin was not the only Thunder reserve who delivered in Game 6. Oklahoma City's bench outscored the Rockets' reserves 46-11.

James Harden led Houston with 26 points, seven assists and six rebounds, but he connected on only 7-for-22 from the field. Chandler Parsons contributed 25 points and seven boards, and Omer Asik (13 points, 13 rebounds) recorded his third consecutive double-double.

THE STAT: Brooks said before the game that he was confident his guards would knock down open looks from the perimeter, which is exactly what occurred Friday. Oklahoma City shot 40.7 percent (11-for-27) from 3-point range, including a 6-for-10 (60.0 percent) effort from its bench.

TURNING POINT: The Thunder seized control of the contest at the beginning of the fourth quarter, when they put together a 14-4 spurt to stretch a 78-77 advantage to 92-81. Oklahoma City's defense fueled the surge, as it limited the Rockets to 1-for-7 shooting and forced two turnovers over Houston's first nine possessions of the final stanza.

HOT: Critics of the Thunder called for Martin to step up after back-to-back defeats, and the ninth-year shooting guard did so in a big way to help Oklahoma City put the sleeper hold on Houston. The ninth-year shooting guard delivered his most efficient half of the postseason over the first two quarters, finishing with 21 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Martin also provided the Thunder with some excellent off-ball action to earn eight free-throw attempts before the break.

QUOTABLE III: "I text Kevin [Martin] after Game 5, and I just told him God is setting him up for a big-time game on the floor he used to play in, so I had faith he was going to come out here, be aggressive and have a really good game. ... NOT: The Rockets' 72-62 lead quickly evaporated as they converted only one shot attempt over the final 6:22 of the third quarter.

GOOD MOVE: Brooks was not afraid to bail on starting center Kendrick Perkins, whose overly aggressive antics early in the contest dealt too much damage to Oklahoma City. Perkins played the first four-plus minutes of the opening period before Brooks switched to a smaller lineup that included Nick Collison (10 points, nine rebounds) to pull the Thunder out of a 16-5 deficit.

BAD MOVE: Durant lit a fire under Parsons when he lowered his shoulder into the second-year forward on the final play before halftime. Parsons opened the third period in unconscious fashion, nailing three of four attempts from the promise land to spearhead an 18-4 Houston run over the first 6:15 of the second half.

QUOTABLE IV: "Everybody feels bad, but it's the start of a journey for these guys together as a group collectively. The only way that journey gets to be fulfilled is you got to trust each other more. You've got to go out there and build trust with each other. You've got to build symmetry. You've got to build chemistry."

NOTABLE: The Rockets announced before the game that reserve wing Carlos Delfino will undergo surgery in the offseason after a CT scan revealed he has a bone fracture in his right foot. ... Houston guard Jeremy Lin returned to Houston's lineup after missing the last two games with a chest contusion, but he came off the bench for the first time this season. ... Oklahoma City, which was outscored in the paint by an average of 43.2-36.4 over the first five games of this series, finished with a 40-24 edge in the paint. ... The Thunder shot a perfect 16-for-16 at the free-throw line. ... Oklahoma City netted 23 points off the Rockets' 16 turnovers.
