Pacers-Hawks Preview

ATLANTA (AP) After a dismal playoff performance, the Atlanta Hawks decided it was best to spend some time away from each other.

The team arrived at Philips Arena for what was expected to be a regular practice and film session Thursday, a chance to prepare for a must-win game against the Indiana Pacers. Instead, coach Larry Drew spoke briefly with the players and sent them home.

No practice. No watching film.

"I know our guys are not just physically fatigued but I think they're mentally fatigued as well," Drew said. "I wanted to just allow these guys to kind of get away, kind of regroup, kind of recharge a little bit as we're getting ready for Game 6. I brought them in and spoke to them. But I just really felt the best thing today was to get away from it, get away from us, get away from everybody and get ready for tomorrow."

The Hawks certainly weren't ready for Game 5.

Indiana reasserted the physical dominance it showed in the first two games, romping to a 106-83 win and a 3-2 lead in the series. The Pacers can wrap things up with a win Friday night in Atlanta.

More troubling for the Hawks was not only losing the game, but losing their cool. Three players - Josh Smith, Jeff Teague and Ivan Johnson - picked up technical fouls for griping to the officials. Two more technicals were whistled for defensive 3-second calls.

In all, it was a total collapse by a team that had played with such energy and control during the two previous games in Atlanta.

Now, the Hawks can only hope to extend the streak of the home team winning every game in the series, which would force a Game 7 at Indianapolis on Sunday. It's still a rather bleak scenario - Atlanta has lost all three games in Indy by an average of more than 18 points - but that's the only path they have.

"There does come a point where it stops being about X's and O's," Drew said. "That's where we are. It's a two-game series and obviously we want to extend it by winning. But X's and O's, it won't be about that. It will be about how hard we play between those lines, how hard we compete."

The Pacers are in a much more enviable position, obviously, knowing they can win the series without winning a game down south.

But coach Frank Vogel would like to see his young team take an important step in its development process by stealing one on the road. Indiana is still finding its way in the postseason, which was evident during its two losses in Atlanta, one of them a 21-point blowout that was over by halftime. This may be the last time the Pacers have a home-court edge, so they need to find a way to get it done outside of their cozy, raucous fieldhouse.

More daunting, Indiana hasn't won in Atlanta since 2006, a 13-game losing streak that provides another mental stumbling block.

"You can't look at it like we've lost 13 in a row there or two in a row there," Vogel said before the team boarded its flight. "We have to look at it like they're a different team at home. They're really, really good at home and we've made some adjustments that we hope will help."

Vogel changed the rotations for Game 5, keeping some starters with the second unit to provide extra scoring punch. David West played his best game of the series, scoring 24 points, while Paul George added 21 points and 10 rebounds.

But the biggest change came at the defensive end, where the Pacers finally looked like one of the NBA's stingiest teams. They held the Hawks to 33 percent shooting - by far their worst showing of the series - and rarely gave Atlanta a decent look. Smith and Al Horford - the main inside threats - combined to shoot 10 of 30. Guard Jeff Teague, the catalyst for the offense, was a dismal 3 of 16. No one on the Hawks scored more than 14 points.

"I don't know if they did anything differently," said Atlanta Kyle Korver, who never found much of an opening for his specialty, the 3-point shot. "They just played at a high level. That was the best game they've played. We didn't get any easy looks, even on the fast breaks. We had a lot of tough layups. We had some close shots, but they were still contested. We never really got into a good offensive rhythm."

With each missed shot, the Hawks bickered more and more with the officials.

The two things Drew had preached before the game - composure and playing smart - went totally out the window in the second half as the Pacers pulled away.

"We went into a hostile environment knowing that Indiana would come out and give us their best shot," the coach said. "We have to be able to respond to it. The way to respond is not to lose our composure, and we did. We lost our composure."

Atlanta actually shot two more free throws than the Pacers in Game 5, which makes the meltdown even more perplexing to Drew.

"The way we went at the officials, it's like we're playing the blame game again," he said. "I thought we got some great whistles. We got to the foul line as many times as they did. It wasn't the whistles. It was the way we responded. That's not the way to get it done in the playoffs. You've got to be much tougher mentally, you've got to be much stronger, you've got to be thick-skinned. You can't let things rattle you."

Maybe some time away from each other will help.

Pacers finish off Hawks, win Game 6 81-73

ATLANTA (AP) The Indiana Pacers packed for an extended trip.

Good call.

George Hill and David West each scored 21 points and the Pacers withstood a furious Atlanta comeback in the fourth quarter, beating the Hawks 81-73 on Friday night to close out the opening-round playoff series four games to two.

After snapping a 13-game losing streak in Atlanta dating to December 2006, Indiana headed off to New York to take on the Knicks in the first two games of the conference semifinals. The opener is Sunday at Madison Square Garden, an itinerary the Pacers prepared for by packing for a possible six days on the road.

"Quick turnaround," said Indiana's Roy Hibbert, who led a dominating Pacers performance on the boards. "Enjoy tonight on the plane ride, get to New York, get something good in our bellies if stuff is still open."

New York finished off the Celtics 88-80 shortly after the horn sounded at Philips Arena. The Pacers were certainly glad they didn't have to return to Indianapolis for a decisive game against the Hawks.

"It's nice to be able to get it done here," Hibbert said. "We showed a lot of resolve when the other team made their run."

The home team had won every game until the Hawks returned to Atlanta and set a franchise playoff record with just nine points in the second quarter on 1-of-15 shooting. The defense broke down in the third, allowing Hill and West to combine for 22 points, and the Pacers built a 65-50 lead going to the fourth.

To their credit, the Hawks showed plenty of heart, slicing Indiana's lead to 76-73 on Al Horford's dunk with 2:13 remaining.

But the comeback fizzled. Atlanta didn't score again, setting up what figures to be a tumultuous offseason.

The Hawks have only three players who are definitely under contract for next season - Horford is the lone starter in the group - and it seems likely this will be a much different team next season. Plus, they very well could have a new coach. Larry Drew was in the final year of his contract, and general manager Danny Ferry figures to want his own man in the post as he heads to his second season.

Longtime stalwart Josh Smith, an Atlanta native who has played for the team ever since he was drafted out of high school eight seasons ago, is among those heading into free agency.

"There's plenty of time to think about what the future presents," Smith said. "I'm not really concerned about that right now."

If that's it for Smith in Atlanta, he missed his final shot.

How fitting on a night when the Hawks made only 26 of 78 (33 percent). Horford led with 15 points, while Smith and Devin Harris finished with 14.

Indiana bullied the Hawks much of the game, overcoming their own poor shooting (32 of 76) by bullying Atlanta in the lane. The Pacers finished with a staggering 53-35 lead on the boards.

Hibbert added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Lance Stephenson also had 11 rebounds.

Over the final two games of the series, the Pacers absolutely manhandled the Hawks on the glass, piling up a 104-63 rebounding edge.

"I'm very proud of our guys to come in here, a tough place to win," coach Frank Vogel said. "A particularly tough place for us to win. It's good to end that streak. But more importantly, it's good to advance and show the type of toughness you need to make a deep playoff run. To win with defense and rebounding, that's been our identity all year, and that was the key to the last two victories."

The Hawks went through an absolutely brutal stretch from early in the second quarter to nearly midway through the third, in which they did not actually put the ball in the hoop.

In the equivalent of more than a quarter - 15:43 to be exact - Atlanta went 1 of 21 from the field, the only basket awarded to Harris on a goaltending call against Hibbert.

At a time when the Hawks needed one of their best performances of the season, they produced one of their worst.

"I wouldn't have believed it," Smith said. "We just couldn't get it going offensively."

The Hawks couldn't play much worse than they did in the second quarter. They showed little energy. They put up some truly awful shots. They missed even when they got a decent look.

Kyle Korver made the Hawks' only basket of the period on a jumper with 10:35 left. After that, they missed their last 13 shots before heading to the locker room to a round of boos from the home crowd.

If not for Indiana having their own offensive issues - the Pacers made only 36.6 percent (15 of 41) - the game would've been a blowout. As it was, the Hawks trailed just 37-29.

Perhaps the most telling sequence for both teams came late in the second. Jeff Teague fumbled away the ball out near the top of the key without being challenged. Indiana's D.J. Augustin took off the other way on an apparent layup, but only to throw up a wild shot that struck the bottom of the backboard. The Hawks followed up with such a pathetic offensive set that 7-footer Johan Petro wound up shooting a 3-pointer just ahead of the shot clocked.

It missed.

So did just about everything else the Hawks put up in the first half.

Atlanta's offensive woes shifted to the defensive end in the third quarter. The Hawks continually got lost on switches, at one point leaving Hill totally alone on a 3-pointer. He knocked down the shot and Harris looked around, his arms in the air wondering what was happening to his team.

The Hawks showed some resilience in their final quarter of the season.

But they expended so much energy wiping out a deficit that had been as high as 19 points, there was nothing left at the end. Horford's rim-hanging dunk was their final basket.

While clearly seeming to sense his three-year run in Atlanta is over, Drew said he was proud of a team that many felt would have trouble making the playoffs after trading away All-Star Joe Johnson and bringing in a bunch of guys in the final year of their contracts.

Even the coach knew he was a lame duck, having the option on his contact picked up last summer but not getting an extension.

"I'm really, really proud of my group," said Drew, who has led the Hawks to three straight playoff appearances but was eliminated in the first round the last two years. "When you've got 11 or 12 guys on one-year deals, and the coach is in his last year, it could've gone either way. But we hung in there and stuck with it."

Notes: Atlanta G Teague has an awful finish to the series, going 3 of 16 in Game 5, and 3 of 12 in the deciding contest. ... Hibbert had his first double-double of the series. ... The Hawks finally shot well from the free-throw line (18 of 20) after struggling much of the series. Unfortunately, they couldn't score consistently from anywhere else. ... THE FACTS: George Hill, David West and the Pacers finally found their way in Atlanta Friday, when they each scored 21 points and Atlanta could not overcome 16 straight missed shots as Indiana broke a 13-game losing streak in Philips Arena with a 81-73 win.

Roy Hibbert added a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) and the Pacers won the series 4-2 to earn a semifinals matchup with the Knicks.

This game was not like the first two in Atlanta, won by the Hawks. It was a lot like Game 5 in Indiana, a 106-83 Pacers win.

In each game, the Hawks shot 33.3 percent. Friday, the Pacers had a 53-35 rebounding edge. In Game 5, the edge was 51-28.

Indiana's NBA-best defense was in peak form early, and even when the Hawks found open shots they often missed them. They missed their last 13 shots of the second quarter (1-for-15 overall) and scored a franchise record-low nine points in the period to trail 37-29.

The Pacers shot just 36.6 percent themselves in the first half, but that looked fantastic to the Hawks' 23.7 percent (9-for-38).

Then, Atlanta missed its first three shots of the third quarter, scored on a goaltending call against Hibbert, and missed four consecutive shots as Indiana expanded its lead to 52-33 on Hibbert's short shot with 7:31 in the period.

The Hawks trailed 65-50 after three quarters, but made a run in the fourth quarter. A 23-9 spurt drew the home team within 76-73 on Al Horford's slam with 2:53 remaining in the game.

Horford led the Hawks with 15 points, but all other Atlantans were 20-for-66 (30.3 percent). Atlanta did not score after his tally as they missed three 3-pointers and two long jumpers down the stretch without grabbing a single offensive rebound in the final quarter.

That was a nice summary of the final two games, won by the Pacers.

Hibbert and Lance Stephenson each had 11 rebounds Friday, and every Indiana started grabbed at least seven.

Josh Smith scored 14 points in each of the last two games, but was 5-for-16 in both games.

Although Indiana's Paul George scored just four points on 2-for-10 shooting after averaging 21.6 ppg in the first five games, his teammates picked up the slack. He focused on defending Smith and Kyle Korver (12 points on 3-for-11 shooting, 0-for-7 on 3-pointers).

Hill, who averaged 7.5 points on 5-for-23 shooting in the first two games in Atlanta, was 7-for-14 and 2-for-5 on 3-balls. West added eight rebounds to his 21 points.

QUOTABLE: "We finally got the monkey off our back in this building. We were more physical, and made them take tough shots. We're happy, but we have to get our hard harts back on, as we have another game in less than 48 hours."

THE STATS: +18, and 4. The Pacers were plus 18 in rebounding (53-35, as Atlanta had just three offensive rebounds and four second-chance points), and Atlanta had just four fast-break points -- none in the first three quarters. Indiana did a fantastic job getting back.

QUOTABLE II: "We needed to guard the 3, we needed to guard them on the break, and we needed to limit them to one shot and this was our best game in the series in doing those three things."

TURNING POINT: When the Hawks started their scoring drought, they trailed just 23-22 after Korver made a 16-foot jumper with 10:35 left in the second quarter. They didn't get the ball inside.

Here were the distances of the 13 straight missed shots to close the period: 23, 18, 16, 25, 22, 26, 7, 16, 21, 20, 24, 4, 26. Eleven of the 13 were from 16 feet or further; eight were from 20 feet or further.

QUOTABLE III: "I think the story of this game was our inability to make a shot. As bad as it was in the first half, we were still within striking distance . . . You have to give Indiana credit. They're really good defensively. They're really big. They put you in a lot of tough situations because their bigs do a phenomenal job in deep post position."

HOT: George didn't score much Friday (four points), but still led all players in series scoring (18.7), rebounding (9.5), tied Teague for assist honors (5.0 ppg) and tied Josh Smith for most steals (11). . . . West was a big factor in the last two games of the series with 21 points on 9-for-21 shooting Friday, and 24 points on 11-for-16 shooting Wednesday in Game 5. He also had four of Indiana's nine blocked shots. . . .

NOT: Atlanta was 3-for-19 on treys Friday and 3-for-14 Wednesday. The Hawks were 6-for-31 in the last two games (19.4 percent), and 31-for-81 (38.3 percent) before that. Atlanta averaged 78 points in the last two games, and 95 before that.

Jeff Teague, a pending restricted free agent, shot 3-for-12 after shooting 3-for-16 in Game 5. . . . Smith, a pending unrestricted free agent who may have played his last game for the Hawks, not only struggled to 5-for-14 shooting in each of the past two games, but settled largely for jumpers. He also had four turnovers in Friday's disastrous second quarter.

For the first time in 84 games, Korver did not make a 3-point shots although the last six games do not count for NBA record-keeping purposes because they were postseason games. He missed all seven long balls Friday, and was 1-for-3 Wednesday. . . .

QUOTABLE IV: "For whatever reason, we weren't executing on the fast break. I think we had some deflating plays on the break that affected us ... that was the difference from Games 3 and 4. We were able to execute and score in the open court, and that opened up our offense."
