Nuggets-Warriors Preview

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Kicks in the ankles. Forearms to the throat. Elbows at the head. Illegal screens. Hard shoves. Bloody lips. Puffy eyes. Body bruises. Some even done by "hit men."

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl thought the reaction to his team's Game 5 win over the Warriors sounded like a "different movie than I'm watching." Golden State's Mark Jackson defended his accusations of dirty play Wednesday, and players on both sides practically promised more physicality.

Bust out the bandages, body wraps and ice packs.

"I think it's just getting started," Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried said.

As if there haven't been enough emotions swirling inside ear-piercing Oracle Arena in the playoffs, Jackson ratcheted up the rhetoric after the Nuggets roughed up point guard Stephen Curry to send the first-round series back to the Bay Area. The Warriors will try to close out Denver again Thursday night in front of their frenzied fans, while the Nuggets need to finally find a way to take their style - whatever that may be - on the road to return the series to the Mile High City for a decisive Game 7.

"They'll be physical again. They'll try to beat up Steph Curry. They'll try to set illegal screens. They'll try to chuck him when he goes down the lane," Jackson said before practice at the team's headquarters in downtown Oakland. "Other than that, I'm not sure what to expect out of them."

What else is there, really?

The Nuggets never trailed, piled up points in the paint, jumpstarted their transition game, curbed Curry's production and bothered big man Andrew Bogut in Tuesday night's 107-100 win in Denver that had everybody still talking a day later. Basically, they returned to form - the same kind the Warriors have showed all season - that helped them win an NBA franchise-best 57 games before a three-game skid in the playoffs put them on the brink of another early exit.

"If there's a scorecard, if we're in a boxing fight right now, they're winning the fight," Karl said. "OK, we won round one, maybe our first round (Tuesday) night. I'm going to tell you, I'll go to any arbiter right now and show the dirty shots. They're winning."

The key for both teams could be keeping their composure.

The Nuggets have yet to bring that physical, frenetic and flashy style to blue-collar Oakland, where the gold-shirt wearing sellout crowd has been one of the NBA's loudest home environments in these playoffs and carried Curry and company to victories in Games 3 and 4.

Given the sudden sights and sounds of this series, the environment could be even wilder now.

Jackson, a former point guard of a New York Knicks team often accused of over-the-line tactics against opponents, seemed to be backhandedly politicking officials when he said Denver sent "hit men" out on Curry during Game 5. Specifically, Jackson repeatedly mentioned Faried's foul in the first half, when the Denver forward stuck his right leg out and moved his body while Curry ran through traffic.

The second-year coach, upset Curry never shot a free throw in 42 minutes, even suggested he had "inside information" from somebody who did not "co-sign" for Denver's more physical game plan. When pressed about the allegation, Jackson declined to say where the knowledge came from.

"I was even caught on tape and asked, `What would I do if I was playing against (Curry) and he heated up?' I'd be physical with him," Jackson said. "That's understandable. It's not hypocritical. There's no part of me that said I'd be dirty with him. You take an attempt to kick him with your foot, with his foot, that's not a basketball play. That's a cheap shot."

Curry, who sprained his left ankle in Game 2 and has had two surgeries on his right ankle, stopped short of saying Faried - or anybody - targeted his ankles. After watching replays, Curry just said: "It is interesting. I don't know what his intentions were."

The Warriors nearly rallied from 22 points down behind their own physical play.

Bogut gave a two-handed shove to Faried's neck after his hard screen on Curry in the first half, drawing a flagrant foul, and Draymond Green was whistled for a flagrant foul for body-checking Faried in the second half. Karl even jokingly asked whether Green played "football or basketball at Michigan State."

Green also gave Denver's Andre Miller a bloody lip and Ty Lawson took an elbow to the head. Nuggets center Kosta Koufos swatted at Curry's arms when he shot well after the whistle blew, and Denver's JaVale McGee and Warriors center Festus Ezeli each got called for illegal screens.

Faried, who won the NBA's Walter Kennedy Citizenship award for community service Wednesday, said he will not back down - and neither will anybody on the Nuggets.

"I'm a good, dirty citizen," he quipped while holding the award at Denver's practice facility. "I think that's what this trophy is. Yep, yep, yep. It's a little dirty. I think that's what it is."

Jackson said he doesn't think the physical play has rattled, or will rattle, his young team.

"We're not concerned," Jackson said. "When we play our brand of basketball, there's no concern about guys getting out of character. We understand what we have to do."

Warriors eliminate Denver with 92-88 win in Game 6

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Draymond Green threw his arms in the air and ran to Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson for an emotional hug. Jarrett Jack squatted down, put his right hand on his head and closed his eyes. Stephen Curry wanted to see it all - teammates parading around the court, gold confetti in the air, smiles all around the announced sellout crowd of 19,596.

Forget that "We Believe" team.

These Warriors proved they belong.

Curry had 22 points and eight assists, Andrew Bogut broke out with the best performance of his injury-saddled season and the Warriors eliminated the Denver Nuggets with a 92-88 victory in Game 6 on Thursday night.

"When we go in the locker room, we're jumping up and down, we're hugging, we're changed men," Jackson said. "This is the greatest group of men as far as a team that I've ever been around or seen in my life."

Bogut had season-bests and career-playoff highs of 14 points and 21 rebounds, and Green added a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds to power Golden State into the second round for the first time in six years.

Bogut also became the first Warriors player with 20 rebounds in the playoffs since Larry Smith had 23 on May 12, 1987 at the Lakers.

"It's very emotional for me because I've had a nightmare of a year," said Bogut, who added four blocks and three assists in an unforgettable performance after rehabilitating his left ankle most of the season.

The Warriors went ahead by 18 points early in the fourth quarter before holding off one final Nuggets flurry.

Andre Iguodala scored 24 points and Ty Lawson had 17 in another disappointed early exit for Denver, which has lost in the first round nine of the past 10 seasons. The Nuggets won 23 of their final 26 regular season games to earn the Western Conference's third seed, then lost four of six to the hot-shooting Warriors.

"We didn't lose this series tonight. This is a proud loss," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "We lost this series in Game 1 and 2. We didn't play well enough to sustain the confidence. We won Game 1 on a last-second layup. In Game 2, we gave away everything we worked for with 57 wins in the season. And that's on me."

The Warriors only outshot the Nuggets 40.3 percent to 34.7 percent in the finale but dominated the rebounding matchup again, 55-44. They also overcame 21 turnovers - including 10 in the fourth - while the Nuggets only had seven.

Golden State, seeded sixth, will open the second round at second-seeded San Antonio on Monday. The Spurs swept the Lakers in four games.

"I'm exhausted," Warriors owner Joe Lacob said after emerging from the locker room celebration.

Jackson ratcheted up the rhetoric after the Nuggets won a physical Game 5, saying Denver sent "hit men" out to take "cheap shots" at Curry. The accusations earned Jackson a $25,000 fine from the NBA for an "attempt to influence the officiating," though neither side ever got out of control in the finale.

Except Curry's shooting - again

On the ball or off the dribble, Curry connected all over his home court in another dazzling second half. Curry swished all four of his 3-pointers in the third quarter and brought the frenzies fans roaring to their feet each time.

Green also made a corner 3 in front of Denver's bench, and Klay Thompson hustled for a rebound and a quick put-back to put the Warriors up 80-62 with 9:11 to play.

The Nuggets failed to score for nearly six minutes during the stretch. But they rallied with 13 straight, held the Warriors scoreless for almost five minutes and gave the fans in Oakland reason to worry.

After the Warriors went back ahead by nine, they nearly collapsed again. Wilson Chandler stole the rebound from Green for an easy layup to get within four, Iguodala hit another from long range and Kenneth Faried made 1 of 2 free throws to bring Denver within two with 32.4 seconds to play.

Iguodala stole Thompson's pass on the ensuing play. Chandler's running layup rimmed out, he missed a put-back and then knocked the ball out in a scrum - a call that stood after a video review and had the Nuggets questioning whether the ball ever bounced out.

"They made the call. The refs make mistakes," Nuggets guard Andre Miller said.

The Nuggets were forced to intentionally foul Jack, who made both free throws to give Golden State a 92-88 lead with 7.3 seconds remaining to seal the victory. Miller missed a 3 and Faried clanked a meaningless jumper as the buzzer sounded, touching off the emotional celebration.

The Warriors advanced to the second round for the first time since 2007, when the "We Believe" team upset top-seeded Dallas in similar fashion - at home and in Game 6. Golden State lost to Utah in the second round that season.

"To finally get it done, it's kind of a hazy feeling," Curry said. "Just a sense of relief the way the game finished."

Golden State seemed to have an answer for everything Denver threw its way in this series.

Even All-Star forward David Lee made a surprising return - "part of it was for inspiration," Jackson said - for the Warriors after not dressing the previous four games with what the team had called a season-ending hip injury. He grabbed one rebound and missed one jumper in 87 seconds off the bench in the first quarter.

Bogut's big first half - 10 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and two assists - allowed the Warriors to erase a nine-point deficit, and they sliced Denver's lead to 42-40 at the half behind a late surge of shooting from their guards on the perimeter.

Faried, the target of Jackson's accusations of "dirty play" in Game 5, picked up his fourth foul with 10:23 to play in the third quarter. Three of those fouls came in the first 1:37 of the third before Nuggets coach George Karl took him out.

Soon after, Curry took control to send the Nuggets home for good.

NOTES: Aaron Hern, an 11-year-old from nearby Martinez, who was injured in the bombings during the Boston Marathon, attended the game with his family and was honored on the videoboard during the first quarter. ... The Warriors are 10-1 in home playoff games in which they had a chance to win the series since moving to the Bay Area prior to the 1962-63 season.

THE FACTS: Next stop, San Antonio.

With Andrew Bogut grabbing 21 rebounds and scoring 14 points for his first career postseason double-double and Stephen Curry adding 22 points, the Golden State Warriors defeated Denver 92-88 in Game 6 Thursday night at Oracle Arena, advancing to the West semifinals where they'll face the Spurs.

Rookie forward Draymond Green had a double-double off the bench for the Warriors, scoring 16 points and grabbng 10 rebounds. Jarrett Jack scored 13 off the bench.

Andre Iguodala led the Nuggets with 24 points and nine rebounds, and Ty Lawson scored 17. Kenneth Faried had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Warriors withstood a furious Denver rally down the stretch, blowing most of an 18-point lead they had built in the third period and early in the fourth.

The Warriors led 80-62 with 9:11 left to play. But the Nuggets started trapping and forcing turnovers as they pulled closer. When Iguodala hit a 3-pointer with 4:10 left, the Nuggets trailed by just four points at 82-78.

Faried cut the lead to 90-88 with 32.4 seconds left, going 1-for-2 from the line. The Nuggets forced a turnover, but Wilson Chandler missed a floater then missed again after grabbing the rebound.

Jack hit two free throws with 7.3 seconds left, putting the Warriors up 92-88.

QUOTABLE: "This is one of the biggest games in most of the guys on our team's careers. So to have an opportunity to close it out in front of our own fans, you got a little jitters. But we settled in in that third quarter, got our rhythm offensively and defensively, opened up an 18-point lead, but we didn't finish it our way."

THE STAT: Since coming to the Bay Area before the 1962-63 season, the Warriors are 10-1 in home playoff games where they've had to chance to close out a series.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors trailed 44-42 at halftime but opened the third quarter with a 22-9 run to take a 64-52 lead. Faried drew two quick fouls in the quarter, giving him four for the game, and he took a seat with 10:23 left. Whether it was a coincidence or not, Curry heated up the moment Faried left. He scored eight quick points, nailing two free throws and a pair long-range lasers. Curry scored 14 points in the third, while Bogut had seven rebounds and six points as the Warriors entered the fourth leading 73-62.

GOOD MOVE: Give the Warriors and coach Mark Jackson credit for both being able to keep a secret and for getting the most dramatic effect out of a move. They unveiled power forward David Lee -- their secret weapon -- just 15 minutes before the game began when he joined his teammates for warmups. Lee suffered a torn hip flexor in Game 1 against Denver, and the Warriors announced the next day that he was out for the playoffs. He apparently had a bad diagnosis or made a miraculous comeback. Either way, he seemed to give the crowd and his teammates a boost, even though he played just 1:27, all in the first quarter when he missed his only shot and grabbed one rebound.

QUOTABLE II: "I got emotional, and I'm still emotional because of just how incredible of a blessing this is. And I think that, you know, God has a sense of humor because he wanted to show folks at the end as we threw the ball all over the place, and it's only a miracle that we advanced."

HOT: Bogut nearly had a double-double by halftime. He grabbed 10 rebounds -- four of them offensive -- scored eight points and blocked four shots by the break. He didn't slow down in the second half, adding 11 rebounds and six points. Bogut tweaked his ankle in Game 5 but said he took a pain-killing shot before the game.

NOT: Denver's Chandler, who was hot in Denver's Game 5 win over the Warriors, went cold in Game 6. He went 5-for-17 from the field and 1-for-6 from long range. He finished with 11 points and one rebound.

QUOTABLE III: "I'm disappointed in the result but can't be more proud of my basketball team. The way we shot the ball, we had numerous moments to give in on the game and we never did. One more layup, one more free throw goes in, it could have been a miraculous comeback."

INSIDE THE ARENA: Aaron Hern, a 12-year-old boy from the East Bay city of Martinez who was injured in the Boston Marathon bombing, attended Game 6 with his family. Hern met Jackson and Warriors general manager Bob Myers before the game. Hern received a loud ovation during a timeout in the first period when his image appeared on the video screens above center court and he was introduced to the crowd. Hern turned 12 on Wednesday.

ROOKIE WATCH: Green made a big impact off the bench with his double-double. At one point late in the fourth when Denver was roaring back, Green made a pair of free throws after a hard drive to the hoop then added a tip-in.

NOTABLE: The Warriors shot only 40.3 percent from the field and 28.0 percent from long range, but the Nuggets were even worse. They shot 34.7 percent from the field and 25.0 percent on 3s. ... The Warriors outrebounded Denver 55-44 overall, but the Nuggets had 20 offensive boards to just 13 for Golden State. ... Warriors guard Klay Thompson went cold in Game 6, hitting 3-for-13 overall and going 0-for-6 from long range."
