Thunder-Rockets Preview

HOUSTON (AP) Kevin Durant felt strange playing without injured All-Star Russell Westbrook for the first time in Game 3 against the Houston Rockets.

He did, however, enjoy handling the ball more in the point guard's absence.

Durant's 41 points helped the Thunder to the win on Saturday night. A victory on Monday would complete the four-game sweep and send them to the second round of the playoffs.

He broke into a huge grin when asked how it felt to run the offense without Westbrook, who had season-ending knee surgery Saturday.

"I tell you, it's fun," he said. "I feel like I'm playing street ball again, just having the ball in my hands all the time and initiating the offense."

The Rockets, of course, didn't share Durant's delight in having the ball more. Durant scored 27 points before halftime on Saturday as Oklahoma City built a huge lead.

Houston coach Kevin McHale alternated defenders Chandler Parsons and Francisco Garcia to try to slow him down, but knows they'll have to do better if they expect to win on Monday.

"It's more difficult," McHale said of dealing with Durant with Westbrook out. "But when he does give it up you've got to deny him and try to keep him from getting it. I thought (Garcia) did a better job of that. Chandler's got to do a better job of that. When he does finally give it up - thank goodness - letting him get it right back is not a very good option for us."

Though Durant tied a career high for points in the playoffs on Saturday night, he wasn't satisfied with his work. He had four turnovers in that game, which was his high in this postseason.

"I've got to make better decisions," he said. "I turned the ball over a few times and I think I should have made stronger passes. But it's a learning process so I've got to continue to keep working at it."

Coach Scott Brooks acknowledged that his staff was scrambling to adjust after Westbrook's injury and that they'll make some minor tweaks for Game 4.

"We don't want to change everything and throw so many things at guys and expect them to pick things up," he said. "We just want to do a few things. As the playoffs go on we can adjust more on the fly."

The Thunder are also focused on staying aggressive after being up by double digits in each of the past two games only to have Houston fight back to go on top in the fourth quarter.

Still, Durant said the team's ability to close out both of those games after losing the lead also shows the maturity of the Thunder.

McHale is proud of his young team for fighting back in the past two games. On Monday, he hopes the Rockets can get off to a good start so they don't find themselves playing catch-up the whole game.

"The last couple of games we put ourselves in position to win," McHale said. "(Monday) night we've got to put ourselves over the top and make them make big, big plays down the stretch."

The Rockets lament their missed chances in the past two games, but say the close calls gave them confidence that they can beat this team. They're undaunted by the fact that no NBA team has come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven playoff series.

"Eventually someone's going to do it," Parsons said. "So we've got a perfect opportunity to go out here and shock the world."

Houston could be without point guard Jeremy Lin on Monday. He missed the second half of Game 2 after bruising his chest muscle before returning on Saturday night. But he was largely ineffective in about 18 minutes and finished with just two points.

Lin said he was hurting on Sunday and didn't know if he'd be ready for Monday.

"That's a big decision for us to make," McHale said. "I know Jeremy really wants to play, but he could not do a lot of stuff last night. We're going to have to wait and see, because it doesn't do any good for him to play if he can't help us."

Though Durant carried the team on Saturday night, the Thunder also got a big contribution from Serge Ibaka, who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

In the days leading up to Game 3, Brooks discussed the need for everyone to do a little more to make up for Westbrook being out. Ibaka did just that, making key plays down the stretch to help Oklahoma City secure the win.

"Serge had some very big moments last night, just his presence around the basket, his offensive rebounds, his shot-making ability," Brooks said. "He's understanding the game much more as the years have gone by ... his game last night, if we didn't have it it would have been a tough game for us to win."

Rockets survive with 105-103 win over OKC

HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Rockets finally found a way to close out a game in their playoff series with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

And it allowed them to escape playoff elimination with a 105-103 win over the Thunder on Monday night.

Chandler Parsons scored 27 points and Patrick Beverley added 16 points with point guard Jeremy Lin out with a bruised chest muscle. Houston avoided a four-game sweep in the best-of-seven series.

The Rockets led in the fourth quarter of each of the last two games only to end up losing.

"We felt the pain and frustration from the last two losses ... and we didn't want that to happen for the third straight time," Parsons said.

It almost did.

Kevin Durant scored five quick points to cut the Rockets' lead to two. James Harden missed two shots for Houston after that and the Thunder had a last chance.

Reggie Jackson missed a jump shot and Serge Ibaka grabbed the rebound, but missed a layup at the buzzer.

A stunned Ibaka fell to the court after the miss and covered his face with his hands.

Durant scored 38 points in Oklahoma City's second game without injured All-Star guard Russell Westbrook.

The victory kept Houston from being swept in the playoffs for the first time since 1996. Game 5 is Wednesday in Oklahoma City.

"Getting this first win gives us confidence going back to Oklahoma City, and anything can happen," Harden said.

Rockets coach Kevin McHale was proud of his young team's work in getting its first playoff victory.

"That was a gutsy win," McHale said. "We're not going to lie down. The one constant has been their willingness to scrap and fight. We kept on fighting."

Durant hit the go-ahead 3-pointer in the Thunder's Game 3 win. He wanted to get another one off on Monday, but Francisco Garcia forced him to give up the ball.

"I was. I was going to try to win it," Durant said. "But he played good defense."

Durant is looking forward to the series returning to Oklahoma City.

"We'll be all right," he said. "We're up 3-1 with a good opportunity to close it out at home. We couldn't ask for a better situation, so hopefully we'll get the job done."

Harden scored 15 points, but also had 10 turnovers. He had two chances to extend Houston's lead with less than a minute left, but missed both of them, including shooting an air ball.

Getting the win allowed Harden to take his tough night in stride.

"I did have a double-double," he deadpanned referring to his points and turnovers.

He picked up his fifth foul with about seven minutes remaining, sending him to the bench. A dunk by Jackson seconds later cut Houston's lead to 98-94.

Jackson got the Thunder within 100-98 with a 3-pointer a couple of minutes later. His 3-point attempt on the next trip down the floor rattled in and out of the basket.

Houston scored four quick points to extend the lead to 104-98 before Harden returned to the game with about three minutes left.

He said he struggled to get going after sitting out in the fourth quarter.

"The foul trouble kind of set me back," he said. "Coming in trying to make big shots, I was cold."

Derek Fisher made a 3-pointer to cut Houston's lead to 104-101 with less than three minutes remaining. It was reviewed a few seconds later and the points were taken away because replays showed the shot clock had expired.

Jackson finished with 18 points in his second start in place of Westbrook, and Kevin Martin added 16.

Houston got 17 points from Omer Asik and 13 from Carlos Delfino.

Oklahoma City's DeAndre Liggins received a technical foul with :07 left in the third quarter for arguing the call on a jump ball. Delfino made the free throw, but Durant hit a jump shot at the buzzer to get the Thunder within 91-84 entering the fourth quarter.

The Rockets led by two points in the third quarter before a 3-point play by Harden. He took Jackson off the dribble for a jump shot and drew the foul - Jackson's fourth - to send him to the bench and the crowd into a frenzy.

Durant was shaken up a few seconds later when he crashed into the scorer's table chasing a loose ball. He remained on his back for a couple of minutes holding his right wrist before being helped to his feet. But he didn't leave the game and seemed to be OK.

Harden's three-point play was the start of a 12-2 Houston run capped by another three-point play - this one by Delfino - to extend the lead to 85-75 with about three minutes left in the third quarter.

Delfino dunked after stealing the ball from Martin, and Durant fouled him on the play.

Houston scored the first 10 points of the second half to erase a halftime deficit and take a 63-60 lead. Parsons had six points in that span.

The Rockets did a much better job of keeping the crowd involved in this one than they did in Game 3, when they trailed early by as many as 26 points. Houston rallied to take a lead in the fourth quarter of that game before losing 104-101.

Near the end of the first half Durant sailed into the crowd Superman-style to save the ball on a bad pass from Harden. He was able to get to his feet and stood in the crowd watching as Martin swished a 3 on the other end. He couldn't figure out how to get out of the crowd for a few seconds before finally climbing out and back onto the court. But before he got back to the game Durant asked a woman in the first row who he crashed into if she was OK.

Houston led by five at the end of the first quarter and was up by three points early in the second before Oklahoma City scored 12 straight points, fueled by seven from Durant. The Rockets took a 43-34 lead about 6 1/2 minutes before halftime.

Delfino swiped the ball from Durant and swished a 3 with 17 seconds left in the first half to cut the Thunder's lead to 60-53 at halftime.

The Rockets led 29-24 after one quarter thanks to 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range on Monday after trailing by 20 points after one in Game 3.

NOTES: Houston's Greg Smith returned Monday after missing Game 3 with a stomach ailment. ... Durant has scored 20 or more points in 30 straight playoff games. ... Former Rockets star Steve Francis watched the game from a courtside seat. ... The Seattle Supersonics were the last team to sweep Houston in the playoffs, getting a 4-0 series win in the Western Conference semifinals in 1996.

THE FACTS: The Houston Rockets needed four postseason games, but they finally figured out a way to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in crunch time. The Rockets survived a late charge by Oklahoma City to keep their season alive, narrowly avoiding elimination with a 105-103 victory Monday that trimmed their deficit in this first-round Western Conference playoff series to 3-1.

Chandler Parsons scored 27 points to go with 10 rebounds and eight assists, and Omer Asik added a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds for Houston. Carlos Delfino and Patrick Beverley also scored in double figures for the Rockets, who overcame a rough night from their All-Star James Harden (4-for-12 shooting, career-high 10 turnovers).

Kevin Durant continued his demolition of Houston, finishing with 38 points on 12-for-16 shooting, eight rebounds and six assists to lead the Thunder. But his seven giveaways paced a 22-turnover effort for Oklahoma City, which will take another shot at closing the series Wednesday in Oklahoma. Reggie Jackson scored 18 points and pulled down four boards in his second career start in place of injured point guard Russell Westbrook.

QUOTABLE: "We were in this situation the last two games. There was no way that we were going to give this one up. ... The pain and frustration from those last two losses, we didn't want that feeling again. We weren't going to let our season end with that happening for the third straight time."

THE STAT: The Rockets were able to withstand Harden's struggles and Durant's playmaking for the first time in this series, mainly because they had more balance than in the previous three contests. Five of Houston's players scored at least 13 points, five snatched at least three rebounds and four dished out at least three assists. In Games 1-3, no more than four Rockets reached double figures in scoring.

TURNING POINT: Harden picked up his fifth foul with Houston holding a 98-92 lead with 6:53 remaining, and Oklahoma City took advantage behind a 6-2 spurt. A Jackson 3-point attempt could have handed the Thunder a 101-100 advantage, but it rattled in and out of the hoop. Baskets by Beverley and Parsons, followed by the officials' decision to overturn a Derek Fisher 3-pointer because of a shot-clock violation, gave the Rockets more breathing room. That meant little to Durant, who took charge and scored five straight points to pull Oklahoma City within 105-103. Beverley took a charge on Durant between a pair of missed jumpers by Harden, leaving the Thunder with an opportunity to launch the final shot of the contest. Jackson penetrated into the paint only to be met by Asik, who altered his shot. Serge Ibaka grabbed the rebound off Jackson's miss, but he rushed his put-back attempt and drew iron instead of kissing it off the glass.

QUOTABLE II: "Essentially, they did what they were supposed to do -- win at home. ... What's the panic about?"

HOT: The Rockets broke down the Thunder on the perimeter on both ends of the floor and knifed into the lane at will during the third quarter. This success translated to the stat sheet, as Houston poured in 20 points in the paint and shot a blistering 65.0 percent (13-for-20) in the third. Houston's 38-point output for the period marked the most points it has netted in a quarter in this series.

QUOTABLE III: "Our defense needs to be more consistent stopping the dribble. ... They had some really, really good moments, and we didn't do a good enough job to stay in front of them."

NOT: Harden gave the ball away more than he scored in the first half, committing seven turnovers while pouring in only six points on 1-for-5 shooting.

GOOD MOVE: The Rockets found success early in the game when they swarmed Durant to force him to pass the ball or commit turnovers. Brooks made the necessary adjustments to get Durant the ball, however, using a three-guard lineup to space the floor and punish Houston for loading up on Oklahoma City's elite scorer. After Martin and Fisher settled into the game in the second quarter and proved they could drain shots, the Rockets had no choice but to allow Durant to touch the ball more often.

BAD MOVE: Brooks went away from what was working at the start of the second half and put his starting five on the floor, which seemed to have a major effect on the Thunder's offensive and defensive rhythm. Kendrick Perkins and Ibaka are Oklahoma City's anchors on the interior, but they did not prevent Houston from scoring on its first five possessions of the second half to surge to a 63-60 edge. Although a smaller lineup likely would not have performed well defensively, it at least could have helped the Thunder score enough to maintain the lead.

QUOTABLE IV: "It was really important for us to win this game tonight. Everyone else might say, 'Oh, it's one game,' but for us, it's our first playoff win with this group. ... We needed this game for us."

NOTABLE: Houston played without starting point guard Jeremy Lin, who missed his first game of the season with a bruised chest. The injury also limited Lin's playing time in the second half of Games 2 and 3. ... Asik grabbed eight of his 14 rebounds on the offensive end. ... Jackson (7-for-18) took two more shots than Durant (12-for-16). ... The Rockets outscored Oklahoma City 44-22 in the paint, marking the second time that Houston has netted at least 20 more points in the paint than the Thunder in this series. ... Houston staved off elimination when trailing a playoff series 3-0 for the first time in franchise history. ... The clubs combined to allow 57 points off 44 turnovers.
