After clinching home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, the Denver Nuggets can make preserving the health of their banged-up lineup a priority in the final game of the regular season.

The Nuggets hope that doesn't come at the expense of their franchise-record home winning streak or the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference as they face the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night.

Already without Danilo Gallinari because of an ACL injury, Denver (56-25) received some promising news Monday when an MRI showed Kenneth Faried - another starting forward - suffered only a sprained ligament in his left ankle a day earlier against Portland.

Faried, who averages 11.5 points and 9.2 rebounds, will miss this contest and is expected to be day-to-day for the playoffs.

Point guard Ty Lawson has been playing through a heel injury but gave the Nuggets a big lift Monday with 26 points, including the go-ahead basket with 9.3 seconds left, in a 112-111 win at Milwaukee.

With the victory, Denver locked up home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. That's especially huge for the Nuggets, considering they've won 22 straight at the Pepsi Center and have the NBA's best home record at 37-3.

"I've always felt that home court, if it was an even series, it's tough for teams to win twice on your home court," coach George Karl said. "And our home court, I know teams don't like to play there. Hopefully mentally they struggle with the thought of playing there."

With the Pacific Division champion Los Angeles Clippers beating Portland on Tuesday, the Nuggets need to win this game to make sure they get the West's third seed. If the Clippers also win Wednesday's visit to Sacramento, they would get the No. 3 spot if Denver loses.

That position would mean a first-round date with Houston or Golden State. If the Nuggets don't get it, they'd have to face Memphis.

Wilson Chandler had 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting Monday as the Nuggets added to their franchise record with their 56th win. Chandler, starting for Gallinari, is averaging 20.0 points on 51.3 percent shooting over the last five games.

The Nuggets have scored 109.7 per game and shot 49.8 percent during their home win streak and face a Phoenix defense that has allowed an average of 107.7 points over its last 12.

These teams have split two meetings, but both came in Phoenix and the Nuggets won 108-93 on March 11 in the most recent one. The Suns have lost nine of 10 in Denver.

Phoenix (25-56) will finish at the bottom of the West with its worst record since going 16-66 during its inaugural 1968-69 season.

However, the Suns have won two of three after dropping 10 straight, and they snapped a franchise-record seven-game home losing streak with a 119-112 victory over Houston on Monday behind Luis Scola's 26 points and 15 rebounds.

"We all know it was a rough year, but I wish the year would have 100 games left so we could turn this around," said Scola, who has averaged 23.3 points in his last four trips to Denver. "The day we finish the year we can start thinking about next season and I'm looking forward to that."

Goran Dragic added 21 points and 14 assists Monday and now seeks his fifth straight double-double. He had 21 points in the Suns' win over the Nuggets on Nov. 12 but only seven in the loss to them last month.

Nuggets secure 3rd seed with 118-98 win over Suns

DENVER (AP) The Denver Nuggets finally got a chance to bask in the glow of their stellar season with the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs wrapped up and the best home record in the league secure at last.

"Thirty-eight and three," Karl said, letting the sweet sound of it all roll off his tongue after Denver's 118-98 rout of the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. "I don't know how many teams have won 38 games at home."

The Nuggets are the 11th, and Karl is the only coach to do it with two different teams. His Seattle squad accomplished the feat in 1995-96.

The Nuggets will face the sixth-seeded Golden State Warriors in the first round beginning Saturday in Denver.

"I think we can take tonight and just be really happy with what we've accomplished, how we've come together as a team," said Andre Iguodala, who scored 20 points to go along with Wilson Chandler's 21 as Denver extended its franchise record homecourt winning streak to 23 straight.

"It was just a big year for us. Tomorrow, it's time to buckle down and get ready for our next opponent."

The Nuggets weren't sure who that would be as they left the arena, knowing only that he'd begin the playoffs at the Pepsi Center, where they eclipsed the old franchise record of 36-5 set in 1976-77, their first year in the NBA.

Hours later, the playoff seeds were finalized with a trio of late games on the West Coast and the Warriors earned the matchup against Denver by winning 99-88 at Portland.

After a hectic final week, Karl planned only a light workout Thursday for the Nuggets, who won an NBA franchise record 57 games overall, besting the 54-win seasons of 1987-88 and 2008-09.

Luis Scola's 17 points and 11 rebounds led the Suns, who wrapped up the second-worst season in franchise history with a mark of 25-57, the worst in the West. The only one that was worse for the Suns was their inaugural NBA season in 1968-69, when they went 16-66.

"Nobody ever wants to end a season like that, but it's all about taking steps," Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter said. "Unless you go out and sign three max (contract) players then you're going to take steps. You have to build somewhere and you have to start with young guys and you grab some free agents and you change.

"Nothing worth anything happens overnight, so we have to keep building and keep working."

The Nuggets have won 40 of 50 this calendar year, putting Karl and vice president Masai Ujiri in the conversation for coach and executive of the year honors, respectively barely two years after Carmelo Anthony forced his way out of town.

"It's a great accomplishment to win that many games, especially with such a young team," JaVale McGee said. "Everybody's happy, happy with the production."

Yet, he senses the Nuggets still have to prove themselves to a skeptical public in the playoffs.

"I don't feel any expectations," McGee said. "I feel like we're underdogs and that people feel we're lucky with what our record is, but we'll show them."

Lacking a star, the Nuggets won more games than ever before by relying on teamwork, ball movement and a deep roster that's so far withstood the losses of Danilo Gallinari (ACL), who's out for the season, and Kenneth Faried (ankle), whom they're hoping can return in the first round of the playoffs.

Even though the Nuggets had their best record since joining the league out of the old ABA 37 years ago, they needed a win in their last game of the regular season to secure the No. 3 seed in the West.

The Nuggets gave Karl just what he wanted to sooth any nerves - some breathing room with a 66-40 halftime lead. It helped that the Suns were missing guard Goran Dragic (ankle), who had 21 points and 14 assists in a win over Houston on Monday, his fourth straight double-double.

Denver raced out to a 35-20 lead after one quarter and were never threatened, allowing Karl to begin substituting freely with an eye toward preserving the health of his banged-up lineup.

"You could see they were trying to get it over with the sooner the better," Scola said. "They're a great team. I like the way they play."

The Nuggets had 11 players post double-digit minutes, including Anthony Randolph, who had 11 points and 14 rebounds and seldom-used center Timofey Mozgov with 10 and 10. After the game, the Nuggets said Mozgov fractured his left thumb and is day to day for the playoffs.

Notes: The Nuggets held a moment of silence before the game to remember the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. ... Hunter went 12-29 after taking over in January. ... Denver's 57 wins are the most for Karl since his Seattle team went 61-21 in 1997-98. ... The Nuggets made the playoffs for the 10th straight season.

THE FACTS: Wilson Chandler scored 21 points, Andre Iguodala added 20 and the Denver Nuggets locked up the third seed in the Western Conference with a 118-98 win over the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday.

The Nuggets (57-25) finished the season winning 40 of its last 50 games to get a high seed in the playoffs. Luis Scola had 17 points and 11 rebound for Phoenix (25-57), which split its last four games but couldn't avoid one of the worst seasons in franchise history. The high-scoring Nuggets finished second in the NBA in scoring and first in points in the paint. They padded that edge by scoring 80 in the lane against the Suns.

QUOTABLE: "I don't feel any expectations. I feel like we're underdogs and that people feel we're lucky with what our record is, but we'll show them."

THE STAT: The Nuggets set franchise records for wins in a season (57) and home wins (38). Their .927 winning percentage at home is tied for the second best in NBA history. Only the 1985-86 Boston Celtics, who finished 40-1 at home, had a better percentage.

TURNING POINT: The first quarter. The Nuggets have had games against weaker opponents that went to the wire, but with the No. 3 seed at stake they made sure this one was over early. They led by 10 in the first four minutes, by 15 at the end of the first and 26 at halftime.

QUOTABLE II: "When you play a team like Phoenix with nothing to lose, you come out nonchalant they stay around and figure they can play in the game. You play aggressive you get the game over with they'll eventually fold."

HOT: Iguodala and Chandler are playing at a high level on the eve of the playoffs. Iguodala came into Wednesday averaging 16.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and nine assists in the previous six games. Chandler has alternated between starting and coming off the bench but it hasn't hurt his scoring or defense.

NOT: The Suns finished up the second-worst season in franchise history. Their 25 wins are the lowest since the team won 16 in their inaugural season of 1968-69.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Before the opening tip there was a moment of silence observed for the victims of the bombing at Monday's Boston Marathon.

GOOD MOVE: Getting a big early lead was key for Denver, which needed to take the drama out of this one right away. It allowed the players to play fewer minutes and got the reserves some time. Denver had 11 players who played double-digit minutes.

ROOKIE WATCH: Phoenix's Kendall Marshall didn't shoot the ball well in place of veteran Goran Dragic, who was out with an ankle injury, but he was solid in 41 minutes with a career-high 14 assists.

NOTABLE: Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried continues to receive treatment for his sprained left ankle with the hopes of playing in Game 1 of the playoffs Saturday. ...
