There's little left for the Dallas Mavericks to play for in their season finale after missing the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. It remains to be seen whether pride - and the chance to avoid a losing record - are much motivation.

The host Mavericks look to close a disappointing season with their fifth win in seven games Wednesday night against the struggling New Orleans Hornets in the teams' second meeting in four days.

Dallas (40-41) will be trying to avoid finishing under .500 for the first time since going 40-42 in 1999-2000 - also the last time it didn't play in the postseason. Given how they've been playing recently, though, the Mavericks may have found inspiration in that goal.

"Us not making the playoffs doesn't mean we can't lay it all out there and fight to the end," veteran Vince Carter told the team's official website. "We did it for our fans and our organization. Each individual knew we were going to lay it out there for each other and for the good of the team, and it starts with the old guys. The old guys are still playing big minutes and battling."

That was the case Monday when Carter scored 22 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 26, but Dallas failed to win its third straight and fell 103-97 to Memphis.

Carter, averaging 13.5 points on the season, has scored 19.5 per game over the past four. Nowitzki has averaged 22.0 - 4.7 above his season mark - in the same span.

Nowitzki has shot 53.5 percent in his last 16 games, but his season scoring average is his lowest since his 1998-99 rookie campaign.

One player coach Rick Carlisle expects more out of Wednesday is leading scorer O.J. Mayo, who has had a strong season but drew Carlisle's ire by scoring two points on 1-of-6 shooting against the Grizzlies.

"He just had a bad night; I guess I will write it off to that. But I will tell you what, if I was playing against my former team, I'd come out ready to go at them. But that's just me," Carlisle said of Mayo, who is averaging 15.4 points but has not scored in double figures in seven of the past 10 games.

"He didn't compete tonight. ... In the biggest game of the year, an opportunity to be a winning team, for him to show up like he did tonight I was shocked."

Dallas certainly showed up ready in the first half against New Orleans (27-54) on Sunday, outscoring the Hornets 62-40 en route to a 107-89 victory. Nowitzki had 19 points to become the 17th player in history to score 25,000, while Shawn Marion had 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Mavs moved to 2-1 in the season series.

Ryan Anderson scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds - eight offensive - for New Orleans, though he went 8 for 20 from the field as his team shot 37.9 percent. It was the fourth straight loss for the Hornets, who have been idle since that game.

"Obviously I didn't have everybody ready to play today, and that's solely on me," coach Monty Williams said. "I can't grow up for the players we have. We have a lot of guys who need to grow up."

Williams' team will finish with the second-worst record in the Western Conference after posting the worst last season at 21-45.

Mavs beat Hornets, finish rough season with win

DALLAS (AP) Darren Collison may not be back for a second year in Dallas after twice losing the starting job at point guard on a team that couldn't extend a 12-season playoff streak.

He at least left owner Mark Cuban and coach Rick Carlisle with something to ponder.

Collison scored 25 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 16 and the Mavericks finished their worst season in 13 years with a 99-87 victory in New Orleans' final game as the Hornets on Wednesday night.

"Personally, I felt like I withstood some things a lot of players can't withstand," Collison said. "I had a lot of point guards come in and start in front of me. But I put my head down and kept working. It's good to leave on a good note."

The Mavericks (41-41) avoided their first losing record since going 40-42 in 1999-2000 - Nowitzki's second season and also the last time they missed the playoffs.

Al-Farouq Amini had 16 points and a career-high 20 rebounds for New Orleans, which will become the Pelicans next season. Eric Gordon also scored 16 for the Hornets, and Robin Lopez had a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards.

Collison, brought in to bring youth to the Dallas backcourt but twice replaced in the starting lineup by 30-something point guards, scored 13 in the first half and was 10-of-15 from the field for the game.

Mike James, the 37-year-old who joined Dallas on a 10-day contract and replaced Collison in early March when Carlisle decided the young guard was a better threat off the bench, went 3-for-4 from 3-point range for nine points.

Shawn Marion scored 15 for the Mavs.

"I thought we had some guys play well, but I thought (Collison) was our most consistent and most dynamic guy out there," Carlisle said.

Nowitzki, who also had a team-high nine rebounds, scored nine points in the third quarter, including a three-point play on a jumper and his one-legged step-back shot to beat the buzzer for a 75-64 lead.

The Hornets got within six in the fourth quarter, but Collison scored eight straight points to key an 18-4 run that put the Mavs ahead by 20.

"Guys fought, battled," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "Guys played out of position most of the season for us. I wish we would have had a healthy team from the start to finish, but that's not something we can complain about right now."

Dallas was trying to get back to .500 against the Hornets for the second time in four days. The stakes were a lot higher Sunday, when Nowitzki and other veterans finally got to shave some shaggy beards after vowing two months earlier not to break out the razors until they reached the break-even mark for the first time since mid-December.

The Mavericks, who were 10 games below in early January, had a chance to finish above .500 before a deflating loss to Memphis a night after the 107-89 win in New Orleans.

"I expected us to battle back, and I expected us to get to, and I thought we would get above .500," said Carlisle, who avoided his second losing record in 11 seasons as an NBA coach. "It didn't happen, but we never lost our spirit."

Nowitzki added four assists, and his line over the final five games - 20.8 points and 7.2 rebounds - looked a lot closer to his career numbers after he worked all season to overcome sitting out the first 27 games because of knee surgery. The 7-foot German wrapped up his 15th season as one of just three rotation players under contract for next season.

"I think the team is going to look a lot different next year," Nowitzki said. "Nobody has a crystal ball. We'll have to wait and see who we bring back."

The Hornets (27-55), long since eliminated from the playoffs for the third time in four seasons, were just looking for a better showing than the 107-89 loss to Dallas over the weekend, when they fell behind 62-40 at halftime and shot just 38 percent for the game.

New Orleans got some energy early from Aminu, who nearly matched his career high of 16 rebounds in the first quarter. He finished the period with 14 and had already matched Kurt Rambis' franchise record of 13 in the first 8 minutes.

Aminu had two more boards than the entire Dallas team in the first half, and New Orleans outrebounded the Mavs 58-37 overall.

"He's just competing," Williams said. "He just played hard. He played so hard he didn't have anything left at the end."

NOTES: O.J. Mayo was sharply criticized by Carlisle after Monday's loss to Memphis. Carlisle faulted the effort of Mayo, who had two points on 1-of-6 shooting with four turnovers and just one assists. "I don't blame him," said Mayo, speaking at Wednesday's shootaround after leaving without talking to reporters Monday. "I didn't play like I'd like and just didn't have the energy I needed to play that game." Mayo held or shared the team scoring lead in 17 of the first 25 games without an injured Nowitzki, including a season-high 40 in a win at Houston on Dec. 8. But he was the leading scorer just twice in the final 25 games - the last was more than a month ago - and was easily passed by Nowitzki in scoring average. "I thought this year was a great learning curve," Mayo said. ... Dallas G/F Vince Carter matched his career high with 162 3-pointers. He did it the first time 12 years ago.

THE FACTS: Darren Collison scored 25 points off the bench Wednesday as the Dallas Mavericks avoided their first losing season since 1999-2000 with a 99-87 victory against the New Orleans Hornets at the American Airlines Center. Dirk Nowitzki added 16 points and nine rebounds and Shawn Marion had 15 points for Dallas (41-41).

All five starters scored in double figures for the Hornets in their final game before taking flight as the Pelicans in 2013-14. Al-Farouq Aminu led New Orleans (27-55) with 16 points and a career-high 20 rebounds and Robin Lopez tallied 14 points and 13 boards.

QUOTABLE: "I thought we would be a playoff team. I felt like we could do something special, but when Dirk missed like 20-some games, that obviously didn't go our way."

THE STAT: Dallas won relatively easily despite the Hornets setting season highs for offensive rebounds (25) and total rebounds (58). They outscored the Mavericks 27-9 in second-chance points.

TURNING POINT: After New Orleans cut the Mavericks' lead to 77-71 with nine minutes left, Marion made back-to-back buckets to spark an 18-4 run. The Hornets missed eight straight shots during that stretch.

QUOTABLE II: "We had a lot of turnovers. It's not really how we wanted to end the season. They really pushed the ball and we let them get to the paint too much."

QUOTABLE III: "[Owner Mark] Cuban and [GM] Donnie [Nelson] have got some work to do this summer to get us back to where we want to be and where we should be."

HOT: Aminu grabbed 13 rebounds in the first eight minutes of the game and finished with 14 in the first quarter, six more than the entire Mavericks team. He had 17 boards by halftime. His previous career high was 16.

NOT: New Orleans shot 37 percent and turned the ball over 21 times, leading to 26 Dallas points. Eric Gordon was 4-for-17 with four turnovers.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Before the game, Nowitzki greeted the crowd on Fan Appreciation Night. "Thanks for the all support throughout the whole year. We hope to see you next year," he said. It was the 473rd consecutive regular-season sellout at the AAC, the longest active streak in the NBA.

ROOKIE WATCH: Brian Roberts started his fifth game in place of injured guard Greivis Vasquez (right ankle) and finished with 13 points on 5-for-17 shooting with six assists.

NOTABLE: Lopez was the only player to start and play in every game for New Orleans this season, just the ninth player in franchise history to accomplish the feat and first since Emeka Okafor in 2009-10. ... O.J. Mayo was the only Maverick to start and appear in all 82 games. ... Vince Carter extended his streak to 25 straight games with at least one made 3-pointer and finished the season with 162 treys, matching his career high set with Toronto in 2000-01. ... New Orleans was 3-42 this season when trailing after the third quarter. ... Dallas improved to 21-3 when shooting 50 percent or better. ...
