Timberwolves-Spurs Preview

Though the San Antonio Spurs may be closer to full strength and have the Western Conference's No. 2 seed, this is not how Gregg Popovich wanted his team to enter the playoffs.

Some may feel he's partly to blame.

With San Antonio still reeling from Stephen Jackson's sudden departure, Popovich plans to play everyone available - even possibly Manu Ginobili and newcomer Tracy McGrady - in the regular-season finale Wednesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Jackson being waived Friday by Popovich and Spurs management about a week before the playoffs left many players shocked. Tony Parker said at the time, "it's a hard one, but it's a big boss decision," and rumors have swirled that some teammates were unhappy with the move, especially so late in the season.

Though nagging injuries played a role, Popovich has received some criticism for throwing off continuity with his many lineup changes, often giving veterans like Parker and Tim Duncan nights off.

San Antonio (58-23) has lost six of nine, blowing a chance at the West's top seed - recently clinched by Oklahoma City. The Spurs had lost just six of their previous 33 games before this slump, which includes Monday's 116-106 defeat at Golden State.

"We've been playing better almost any other year going into the playoffs compared to this year," Popovich said. "The health this year, the different lineups all the time based on what's happened toward the latter part of the season is certainly a part of it. But I also think our focus hasn't been as good as it needs to be the last three to four weeks. I've been disappointed in our focus."

Parker has missed 12 of the last 21 games, and Kawhi Leonard has missed three this month as he battles a sore knee. Popovich sat out Parker, Duncan and Leonard on Monday because they all played the previous night in a 91-86 loss to the Lakers.

"Everybody will play on Wednesday because it's not a back-to-back," Popovich said. "What we're doing tonight is what we do. We've done it all year. We've done it for 17 years."

This will mark McGrady's 16th year in the NBA if he plays a day after being signed. The former seven-time All-Star played in China this season after seeing limited minutes for Atlanta in 2011-12.

Ginobili has missed the past nine games with a strained hamstring and 22 this season due to injury. It's possible he will return Wednesday for a tuneup before San Antonio opens the playoffs this weekend against Golden State or Houston.

Ginobili's average of 11.9 points is his lowest since his 2002-03 rookie season, including 7.9 over his past eight games while shooting 29.0 percent.

That poor stretch began at Minnesota on March 12 in these teams' last meeting, scoring seven points on 2-of-10 shooting in a 107-83 loss. Parker, Duncan and Leonard all sat out while Ricky Rubio notched his first triple-double for the Timberwolves with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists.

Rubio, though, totaled 13 points on 3-of-19 shooting in the first two meetings as the Spurs won both by double digits. Minnesota has lost 16 in a row in San Antonio dating to Jan. 14, 2004.

The Timberwolves (30-51) have recorded their winningest season since Kevin Garnett left in 2007, but there's a chance this will be Rick Adelman's final game as their coach.

Adelman, eighth all-time with 1,001 wins, has considered resigning due to his wife's treatment for seizures. Her condition caused him to miss 11 games earlier this season.

"I'm going to wait and see until we talk to the doctors and see what direction they've decided we need to go at this point," Adelman said. "Then we'll move from there."

Timberwolves snap 16-game skid at San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (AP) The regular season finale against the Minnesota Timberwolves was meaningless to San Antonio. Still, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich called two timeouts within 30 seconds early in the first quarter to stress assignments.

"Just like any coach, you want to improve everything that you're doing," Popovich said. "There isn't a lot of time between now and Sunday, so we want to be healthier and we'll continue to work on executing at both ends of the court. It's a game of mistakes. Nobody is perfect in what they do. You just go to work and keep preparing."

The Spurs, who previously clinched the Western Conference's second seed, have a lot of work to do after losing their third straight and fourth in five games to close the season.

Derrick Williams had 21 points to help the Timberwolves beat the Spurs 108-95 Wednesday night, ending a 16-game losing streak at San Antonio.

Chase Budinger added 15 points and Greg Stiemsma and Ricky Rubio had 12 points apiece for Minnesota, which won on the Spurs' home court for the first time since Jan. 14, 2004.

"It feels great," said J.J. Barea, who had 10 points. "To beat a team like San Antonio here in San Antonio feels great. It is a good win and good feeling for the team."

The Spurs don't share that sentiment entering the postseason.

San Antonio opens the playoffs Sunday by hosting the Los Angeles Lakers, who beat Houston 99-95 in overtime to take the seventh seed in the West.

San Antonio is 3-6 in April, having lost to Golden State and the Lakers in that stretch.

"We don't care so much about the losses," said Manu Ginobili, who returned after a nine-game absence. "The thing is that we are not playing that well. Our defense has not been very solid. That's the concern; not the loss itself."

Tim Duncan had 17 points and 14 rebounds, Gary Neal also scored 17 points and Tony Parker had 15 points and eight assists for the Spurs.

Duncan, Parker and Ginobili did not play in the final quarter.

The Timberwolves outscored the Spurs 52-34 in the second half as Minnesota was 12 for 29 on 3-pointers.

"We know what we can be," Duncan said. "We've done it all season long. We've done it for years. ... It's about doing it consistently and doing it on the defensive end. We haven't been good defensively for the last however many games. So, hopefully, our focus coming into these playoffs is going to change."

The Timberwolves opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 65-63 lead en route to the victory.

Ginobili, who had not played since straining his right hamstring March 29 against the Los Angeles Clippers, received a rousing ovation when he entered the game with 5:32 left in the first quarter.

He had two points on 1-for-4 shooting with two assists and one rebound in 12 minutes.

"It's a huge difference for us," Duncan said of Ginobili's return. "He changes the game for us. Obviously he's done it for years; to have back out there to get his rhythm back and adding another kind of x-factor to the game is huge for us."

Ginobili had an immediate impact, feeding Neal for a 3 that cut Minnesota's lead to 20-16 with 5 minutes left.

Ginobili later wrapped a bounce pass to Duncan, who was stride for stride in a full sprint with Chris Johnson, which resulted in a three-point play following a layup.

"It's a little too early to tell," Ginobili said when asked if that play made him feel in rhythm. "I miss 17 days and you don't get back just because of one play. I felt like I am out of rhythm and need to practice. These three days, four, are going to be great for me."

The play energized the Spurs, who scored five more points as part of a 12-2 run to take a 50-46 lead with 3:23 left in the first half.

After scoring only four points in the opening 21 minutes, Parker had the final 11 points of the half for San Antonio. He was only 3 for 9 from the field, but was 9 for 9 on free throws.

Duncan tied the game at 24 with consecutive layups, but Rubio and Budinger hit consecutive 3s to give Minnesota a 30-24 lead to end the first.

The Timberwolves were 5 for 10 on 3s in the opening quarter.

"If you compete you have a chance and tonight was one of those nights," Minnesota coach Rick Adelman said. "We shot the 3-pointers and whenever we shoot the ball well from 3, we generally have a pretty good chance.

"They have to get ready for next week and we're going to finish on a positive note."

NOTES: F Tracy McGrady, who the Spurs signed Tuesday for the remainder of the season, was inactive. ... Tiago Splitter sat out for the first time this season, having started 58 of 81 games for the Spurs. After starting a combined eight games in his first two years with the Spurs, Splitter had career highs in points (10.3), rebounds (6.4) and minutes (24.7). ... San Antonio observed a moment of silence prior to the game in observance of the victims of the bombings Monday at the Boston Marathon. ... Timberwolves F Kevin Love (right hand/left knee), G Brandon Roy (right knee) and G Malcolm Lee (right knee/hip) all missed the team's season finale with injuries. ... San Antonio made the playoffs for the 16th straight season, the longest current streak in the NBA. The Spurs tied the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers (1959-1974) for sixth longest postseason streak. The Syracuse Nationals/Philadelphia 76ers have the longest streak, making the postseason 22 straight seasons from 1950 to 1971.

Notebook: Timberwolves 108, Spurs 95

THE FACTS: Derrick Williams scored 21 points, and five other Timberwolves scored in double figures as Minnesota sent the San Antonio Spurs into the playoffs on a down note in a 108-95 victory on Wednesday at AT&T Center.

The Spurs lost seven of 10 to finish the regular season. To get a true guide as to how poorly San Antonio is doing is difficult, though. Tim Duncan, who scored 17 points and had 14 rebounds in 27 ½ minutes tonight, missed two of those final 10 games. Tony Parker missed four of those games, Kawhi Leonard missed three and Manu Ginobili didn't play in any of them until tonight. Even starting center Tiago Splitter was held out tonight. All are expected to play more of a routine playoff schedule starting this weekend.

The Timberwolves (31-51) were without Nikola Pekovic (left calf contusion), but they limited the Spurs (58-24) to less than 42-percent shooting and forced six more turnovers.

QUOTABLE: "We're in the playoffs. We haven't played well in the last couple of games, but we're in the playoffs. We'll worry about the concerns later. Right now, we're excited about finding out who we're going to play."

THE STAT: The Spurs took 15 of the first 17 free throws of the game, and they went 20-for-20 in the first half while leading 61-56. But San Antonio did not get to the foul line for the next 15 ½ minutes (they were the only two free throws the Spurs took in the second half) and were outscored 32-19 during that span.

TURNING POINT: The Spurs led by five at halftime, but Minnesota scored 21 of the next 34 points as Greg Stiemsma took over. The second-year center out of Wisconsin went 5-for-5 (four on outside jumpers and the other on a driving slam dunk through the lane), had three steals and a blocked shot. By the time that was over, the Spurs pulled Duncan and Parker and settled in for the playoffs.

QUOTABLE II: "Our guys will finish on a positive note. A lot of guys contributed tonight. We had our struggles this year, but I think the guys learned a lot, too."

HOT: Ricky Rubio went 3-for-19 in his first two games against San Antonio this season, but he shot 13-for-27 in the final two games in the season series including 3-for-5 from the 3-point line tonight.

NOT: Parker went 1-for-10 in his previous game Sunday in a loss against the Lakers in L.A., and combined with his 3-for-10 shooting tonight he's 4-for-20 in his final two games of the regular season. Parker did go 9-for-9 from the free-throw line tonight and finished the season 28-for-28 in his final four games

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Duncan turns 37 next week, yet he'll go into the playoffs off his best season in three years (17.8 points per game and 9.94 rebounds). He had a double-double in his last two games (23 points and 10 rebounds against the Lakers in his previous game).

GOOD MOVE: When the Spurs removed Duncan and Parker from the game and allowed five reserves to finish the game, the Timberwolves essentially matched with a reserve unit with the exception of Stiemsma and Williams. In the fourth quarter, J.J. Barea, Chase Budinger, Alexey Shved and Dante Cunningham played all 12 minutes, and Minnesota outscored the Spurs 28-19 to end the game.

BAD MOVE: Usually a spinning, unopposed slam dunk right in front of the embarrassed home team's bench is not a good move. That's exactly what Williams did after the Timberwolves got a loose ball deep in the Spurs end of the court. It gave Minnesota a 71-67 lead with 6:15 to go in the third quarter, but the Spurs threw in the towel less than four minutes later by taking Duncan and Parker out of the game for the rest of the night.

ROOKIE WATCH: Shved finished with six points and three assists for Minnesota, and he completed the season ninth in scoring among rookies with an 8.7 points per game average.

NOTABLE: The Timberwolves snapped a 16-game losing steak in San Antonio. They had not won here since January 2004. ... This is the second time in nine seasons that the Spurs were unable to win the season series against Minnesota. ... Ginobili is shooting less than 30 percent (21-for-73, 28.8 percent) over his last nine games. He was 1-for-4 tonight while playing almost 12 minutes, all in the first half.
