The Atlanta Hawks are going to need some help now if they want to return to the New York area sometime this weekend.

The New York Knicks could see some of their regulars back in action in their final tuneup before the postseason.

The Hawks still have a chance to gain the Eastern Conference's No. 5 seed, but must end the Knicks' nine-game home win streak Wednesday night to keep alive those hopes.

Atlanta (44-37) needed to win its final two games to earn the fifth seed and a first-round matchup with Brooklyn, but fell 113-96 at home to Toronto on Tuesday.

Coach Larry Drew did not extend any of his players, with every starter logging fewer than 22 minutes and no player reaching 28. Center Al Horford sat out because of soreness in his chest, and his status for Wednesday is not known.

"I'm going to err on the side of caution," Drew said.

The Hawks now must defeat New York (53-28) and hope Chicago loses at home to Washington to gain the No. 5 seed. If that does not happen, Atlanta will be sixth and face Indiana. The Hawks split their four games with the Pacers, with each team winning at home, and split their four with the Nets.

It's unclear how the Knicks will approach this contest since they have clinched the No. 2 seed and face Boston in the first round.

Coach Mike Woodson rested NBA scoring leader Carmelo Anthony as well as Raymond Felton and J.R. Smith for Monday's meaningless 106-95 loss at Charlotte. Tyson Chandler was also out with a bulging disc while Kenyon Martin sat out with a sprained left ankle, as Woodson used just seven players.

Woodson seemed to indicate some of those players could see action against the Hawks.

"If 'Melo and those guys want to sit out Wednesday, then that's on them, but I'm thinking that they're probably going to play," Woodson said.

The Knicks' official game notes, however, listed Anthony as out Wednesday with a sore left shoulder. Chandler and Martin are also out.

Anthony is averaging 28.7 points while Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant is at 28.1 in the race for the scoring title.

With nothing on the line Monday, Woodson gave Steve Novak his first career start as a Knick. Undrafted rookie Chris Copeland scored a season-high 32 points.

"So it's a game that the guys we started got an opportunity to play a lot of minutes to get ready for the Atlanta game on Wednesday and then we'll get ready for the Boston series starting probably Saturday," Woodson said.

The uncertainty surrounding the Hawks' playoff seed mirrors a franchise set for major change after 2012-13. Drew, top scorer Josh Smith and numerous other Atlanta players are in the final years of their contracts, and Tuesday's listless effort in the home finale was noticeable.

"We came out a little soft, and played as if we were just winding it down," Drew said.

The Knicks are 2-0 against the Hawks as they try to sweep the season series for the first time since going 3-0 in 2003-04.

One player who won't see the court for the Knicks is veteran forward Rasheed Wallace, who retired again from the NBA on Wednesday after he was unable to recover from a left foot injury. Wallace hadn't played since December before returning Monday against Charlotte, then exited after 4 minutes because of continued soreness.

NEW YORK (AP) A patchwork lineup was good enough against an opponent that chose sitting over seeding.

Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler and the rest of the New York Knicks will be back Saturday against a team that will bring its best.

Chris Copeland scored 33 points on a night that belonged to the benches, and the Knicks wrapped up their winningest season in 16 years by beating the Atlanta Hawks 98-92 on Wednesday.

With Anthony, the NBA scoring champion, and just about every important player on either side sitting, the Knicks finished 54-28, their most victories since going 57-25 in 1996-97.

"A good team effort," coach Mike Woodson said. "I thought they fought all the way to the end and were able to come out with a `W' and now we have to get ready for Saturday."

New York is the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and will host the No. 7 Boston Celtics on Saturday afternoon.

"It's going to be a war. It's going be a battle every game," Knicks forward Iman Shumpert said. "We're just hoping to win our four games and keep moving."

Atlanta would have earned the No. 5 seed in the East with a victory and a Chicago loss but apparently had no interest, resting Josh Smith, Al Horford, Jeff Teague, Devin Harris and Kyle Korver.

The Bulls beat Washington anyway, and the Hawks settled for sixth and will face No. 3 Indiana in the first round.

"They are a good team and it is going to take a heck of an effort to beat them in a seven-game series," Hawks coach Larry Drew said.

Anthony finished with 28.7 points per game to end Kevin Durant's three-year run as scoring champion. Durant also sat out Wednesday and stayed at 28.1 per game, making Anthony the first Knicks player since newly elected Hall of Famer Bernard King in 1984-85 to lead the league.

J.R. Smith, Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd also sat, while Chandler and Kenyon Martin remained out with injuries, but are expected to be ready for the playoff opener.

But it was an otherwise bad day in a strong regular season for the Knicks, as Rasheed Wallace retired again earlier Wednesday because of continued pain in his left foot.

Sidelined since December, Wallace came back Monday against Charlotte but lasted just 4 minutes before pulling himself out.

He had quickly become a key contributor on the court and an important leader in the locker room after ending a two-year retirement to join the Knicks. He was at the game sitting behind the bench, and coach Mike Woodson said he hopes the 38-year-old forward will hang around.

Guard Pablo Prigioni, who had moved into the starting lineup late in the season, sprained his right ankle in the first quarter and didn't return. The Knicks said X-rays were negative and Woodson said he wasn't sure if Prigioni would be ready for Saturday's game.

Shumpert motioned to come out of the game immediately after throwing a lob pass on the fast break in the fourth quarter and remained on the bench for the rest of the game. His injury was just a cramp and he said afterward he was fine. Copeland hurt his shoulder but kept shooting through the pain, going 14 of 29 in his second straight 30-point performance.

James White scored 20 points for the Knicks and Shumpert had 18. Earl Barron, signed earlier Wednesday, finished with 11 points and 18 rebounds.

Mike Scott had 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Hawks, who lost their final two games. John Jenkins scored 20 points.

Notes: Quentin Richardson, signed Tuesday by the Knicks, scored five points on 1-of-11 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. ... New York swept the series for the first time since 2003-04 and has won the past four meetings. ... THE FACTS: Despite suffering a dislocated shoulder late in the game, Chris Copeland became the first Knick rookie to have back-to-back 30-point games since Bill Cartwright in 1980 when he went for a career-high 33 points as the Knicks closed the regular season by beating the Atlanta Hawks 98-92 at Madison Square Garden.

New York won 16 of its final 18 games to close the season at 54-28, their best record in 16 years.

James White added 20 points for the Knicks and Iman Shumpert tallied 18, but left the game in the fourth quarter with cramps in his right thigh. In his season debut with the Knicks, Earl Barron put up 11 points and 18 rebounds in 37 minutes.

Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith, Jason Kidd, Raymond Felton and Tyson Chandler were among those who did not play for the Knicks.

Mike Scott had 23 points and John Jenkins 20 for the Hawks (44-38), who were without the services of Al Horford, Josh Smith, Kyle Korver and Devin Harris.

With the loss, the Hawks will be the No. 6 seed and will face the Indiana Pacers in the first round.

New York was already locked in to the No. 2 seed in the East and will face the Boston Celtics.

THE STAT: The Knicks shot 9-for-24 (38 percent) from the arc, while the Hawks were 2-for-21 (10 percent).

TURNING POINT: The Knicks raced out to a 25-16 first-quarter lead behind a combined 15 points from Pablo Prigioni (eight points) and Barron (seven). Prigioni then turned his right ankle on a drive and was forced to leave the game. Copeland had 18 points at the half, when the Knicks led, 45-39.

QUOTABLE II: "Iman was mainly cramps. Cope's fine. He had a helluva game, he'll sleep good on that. Pablo will be day-to-day."

WHO'S HOT: Copeland has gone for 33, 32 and 20 in his last three games, an average of 28.3 points per game.

WHO'S NOT: Steve Novak went 1-for-8 from beyond the arc. He is danger of losing his spot in the postseason rotation to Copeland.

NOTABLE: One day after signing former Knick Quentin Richardson for the playoffs, New York on Wednesday announced the signing of Barron in the wake of Rasheed Wallace's retirement. Barron played seven games for the Knicks in 2009-2010, averaging 11.7 points and 11.0 rebounds over 33.1 minutes. "The way we play offensively he fits right in from a pick-and-pop guy who can help some," Woodson said of Barron. "Defensively, he knows the rotations. Hes another big; we're happy to have him."

NOTABLE II: Barron replaced Wallace, 38, whom the Knicks had hoped could play 10-15 minutes per game in the playoffs beginning Saturday against the Celtics after coming off left foot surgery in February. Wallace called it quits Wednesday after lasting just 3 minutes, 50 seconds in Tuesday's loss at Charlotte before leaving the game with a sore foot. "Rasheed has given this team everything he had," Woodson said. "He is a winner, true professional and leader on and off the court. Due to his injury, he will not be available to play for us during the playoffs." He added: "I think he's going to hang around and try to be around the team some. I like Rasheed, I like him around me."
