Spurs-Lakers Preview

Kobe Bryant seemed to be the one constant during a tumultuous season for the Los Angeles Lakers. Now, they'll have to conclude their chase for a playoff spot without him.

In its first game since Bryant suffered a devastating injury, Los Angeles seeks another crucial victory Sunday night as it hosts the San Antonio Spurs in a possible first-round playoff preview.

"We know he's out, but we can't put our heads down like it's over with," Lakers center Dwight Howard said. "We have to go out there and play. We have a lot of talented guys on this team. I think we can accomplish something great, with or without Kobe."

Bryant's initial fear - that he sustained a torn Achilles tendon in Friday's 118-116 home win over Golden State - was confirmed after the game, and he underwent season-ending surgery Saturday.

The 34-year-old superstar is in for an arduous rehab process, but said he is aiming to be ready for the start of next season even though recovery time is expected to be six to nine months. That still leaves the Lakers (43-37) without one of the game's best players for the final two games of their schedule, which concludes at home against Houston on Wednesday.

They own a one-game advantage over Utah for the Western Conference's final playoff spot but lost that head-to-head tiebreaker, so the Lakers must finish at least a game better than the Jazz to make the playoffs for an eighth straight year. Wins in each of their final two games would secure a postseason berth, while a loss in either would see them anxiously awaiting how the Jazz finish with games at Minnesota on Monday and Memphis on Wednesday.

Bryant's injury is the latest and most devastating in a dysfunctional Lakers season that has also seen prolonged absences by Pau Gasol and Steve Nash, who has missed six in a row with a hamstring injury and is listed as doubtful for Sunday.

"We're fueled by these injuries," said Gasol, who had his first triple-double of the season Friday with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. "We want to take on the challenge and prove we're a good team even without our best player."

Without Bryant and his averages of 27.3 points, 6.0 assists and 5.6 rebounds, Jodie Meeks will assume the starting shooting guard role. Meeks has averaged 7.5 points and shot 33.3 percent in eight starts.

If Los Angeles does grab the West's No. 8 seed, it could begin the playoffs against San Antonio, which is a half-game behind Oklahoma City for the conference's best record but has a game in hand.

The Spurs (58-21) guaranteed they would finish no lower than the second seed with Friday's 108-101 win over the Kings coupled with Denver's loss to Dallas.

But San Antonio's frontcourt will also be slightly short-handed moving forward as the club decided to waive Stephen Jackson on Friday, and Boris Diaw is expected to miss three to four weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst from his lumbar spine. Manu Ginobili (strained hamstring) has sat out the last seven games and will miss the final three of the regular season.

"We probably look a little thin, but life goes on," coach Gregg Popovich said.

Friday did see Tony Parker return after missing two straight games and three of four with a sore neck. He had 22 points and 10 assists for his 17th double-double of the season, two more than his previous career best.

Parker is averaging 23.0 points while shooting 58.8 percent in the last four meetings with the Lakers - all San Antonio wins. Two of those came this season - before the All-Star break - as Gasol and Howard missed one and combined for just 23 points in the other.

Gasol and Howard will be tasked with slowing down Tim Duncan, who is averaging 22.2 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.8 blocks over his last 13 games.

"Timmy shows up and does his job. Tony shows up and does his job. There's not a lot of gossiping about the situation," Spurs guard Gary Neal said of Jackson's departure. "It is what it is and we try to prepare ourselves to win games."

Lakers win without Kobe, rallying past Spurs 91-86

LOS ANGELES (AP) An empty chair sat in front of Kobe Bryant's locker Sunday night, and the Los Angeles Lakers realized they would have to fill it together.

With their playoff hopes likely on the line against powerful San Antonio, the Lakers cobbled together a group effort that kept them in the hunt.

Dwight Howard had 26 points and 17 rebounds, and the Lakers staged a dramatic rally in the fourth quarter to win their first game since losing Bryant for the season, beating the Spurs 91-86 Sunday night to stay in playoff position.

Steve Blake scored 23 points for the Lakers (44-37), who lead Utah (42-38) by 1 1/2 games for the eighth postseason spot in the Western Conference after their seventh win in eight games - even with Bryant watching from home following surgery on his torn Achilles tendon.

The Lakers weren't exactly relishing a future without their leading scorer, but they warmed to the challenge down the stretch.

"It definitely gives us confidence that if we play as hard as we did tonight, we can beat anybody," said Pau Gasol, who had seven points and 16 rebounds.

Bryant limped off the Staples Center floor Friday night, his 17th NBA season finished. He'll be largely immobile for the next few weeks, but he tweeted a plan to call in at halftime with adjustments for his teammates.

Most of the Lakers said they didn't actually hear from Kobe, but they knew he was proud.

"Whew!! Well done my dudes. Well done. UNO MAS (hash)playoffs," Bryant tweeted after the game.

The Lakers all shared Bryant's playmaking and defensive duties, working together imperfectly but effectively. Blake filled in for injured point guard Steve Nash and provided an unexpected scoring punch along with top reserve Antawn Jamison, who scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.

"We knew everybody doubted us, but that's fine," Howard said. "We're going to push even harder. I told our guys before the game, `Nobody believes we can win. We've just got to go out there and play like it. We're all professional athletes. We've all done some great things in our career, so why not just go out there and play hard, and let everything happen?"'

Los Angeles blew open a tied game with a 15-4 run midway through the fourth. Bryant's starting replacement, Jodie Meeks, hit two 3-pointers during the rally, and Blake added three free throws in the final seconds while the Lakers fended off Tim Duncan's late rally for the Spurs.

The Lakers were clunky at times, with Gasol missing 12 of his first 13 shots and Howard struggling at the free throw line when San Antonio intentionally fouled him in the third quarter. They were still markedly effective, with a late-game smoothness they haven't often shown this season.

"Kobe is such a dominating player," Blake said. "He's going to have the ball in his hands, and we always want to play through him. Tonight, I think everybody felt they could show what they can do."

Los Angeles only needs one more win or one Utah loss to clinch its 16th playoff berth in Bryant's career. The Jazz visit Minnesota on Monday before finishing the season against Memphis, while the Lakers have the next two days off before their finale at home against Houston.

Duncan had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who have lost six straight road games. San Antonio (58-22) is likely to finish second in the West behind Oklahoma City (59-21), which holds the tiebreaker.

Tony Parker scored just four points on 1-of-10 shooting while playing for just the fourth time in April, possibly slowed by his injured shin in the Spurs' first game since waiving disenchanted forward Stephen Jackson. San Antonio is headed into another postseason as a top-two seed, but the Spurs have lost five of eight after failing to complete a season sweep of the Lakers.

"We didn't match their energy at all," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "I just thought we sort of floated through the game. Duncan was great, as usual. Timmy is a pro. ... He's really the only guy on the team that played like somebody who wanted to win a championship."

Duncan echoed Popovich's concerns about the Spurs' recent play while also expressing surprise at Popovich's decision to disrupt the team's chemistry by dumping Jackson so close to the postseason. Kawhi Leonard, whose increased prominence led to Jackson's dissatisfaction and dismissal, managed just eight points in 33 minutes against the Lakers, making only one field goal.

"We're two games away from the playoffs, and Manu (Ginobili) is still not here, Tony is still finding his rhythm," Duncan said. "We're not scoring at the rate we need to, but we're a veteran team, and we're confident we can get it together."

The Spurs couldn't have anticipated that the Lakers' biggest offensive surprise would be their backup point guard: Blake scored 14 points in the second quarter and hit four 3-pointers, fearlessly stepping up to create shots while Nash missed his seventh straight game with a right hamstring injury. Los Angeles is hoping Nash can return for the season finale.

NOTES: Blake outscored Parker 18-2 in the first half. ... The Lakers signed G Andrew Goudelock in time for the second-year pro to be in uniform. Goudelock was Los Angeles' second-round pick in 2011, and he showed enough scoring promise in 40 games of action last season to earn the nickname "Mini Mamba" from Lakers fans. He was waived in training camp last fall and spent this season with two NBA D-League teams. Goudelock would be eligible for the postseason if the Lakers make it. ... Charlize Theron, Edward James Olmos and Andy Garcia watched near courtside.

THE FACTS: The Lakers still face many questions as they try to squeeze into the postseason by the thinnest of margins. Some were answered Sunday night when the Spurs came to town. The biggest being, just how would the Lakers compete without leading scorer Kobe Bryant, who suffered a torn Achilles tendon two days earlier? In a nutshell, they performed remarkably well, blowing out to an 11-point fourth quarter lead and then holding off a Tim Duncan-led charge to win, 91-86, at Staples Center and move 1 ½ games ahead of the Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

QUOTABLE: "These guys are more than capable and we're ready to step up to the challenge."

THE STAT: The Lakers shot 36.5 percent from the floor compared to 37.1 for the Spurs, who fell to 13-1 on the season when holding their opponent to under 40 percent and 52-5 when outshooting the opposing team.

TURNING POINT: Duncan's three-point play with 1:24 remaining cut the Lakers' lead to 88-84 and 16 seconds later Cory Joseph was left all alone for a layup to keep it a four-point game. The Spurs had three chances to make it a one-possession game in the final minute, but Gary Neal, Joseph and Danny Green missed 3-pointers and the Lakers were able to hold on for the much-needed win.

HOT: Replacing the 27.3 points Bryant averaged is just one of the hurdles the Lakers are facing. L.A. point guard Steve Blake did his part, however, scoring 23 points, two off his career high. Blake came in averaging 6.5 points this season. He started 7-for-8 from the floor, including 4-for-5 from 3-point range, before finishing 8-for-16 and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Lakers center Dwight Howard was a dominant force in the paint, finishing with 26 points, 17 rebounds and three blocked shots. He shot 8-for-17 from the free throw line but made two big ones with 1:37 left to push the lead back to seven. Duncan looked to be in playoff form as well, finishing with 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

QUOTABLE II: "Timmy's a pro. He doesn't care what the situation is or what's going on, he's going to play the way he did tonight. He's really the only guy on the team that played like somebody who wanted to win a championship."

NOT: It was a night to forget for Lakers forward Pau Gasol and Spurs point guard Tony Parker. Gasol missed 12 of his first 13 field-goal attempts before finishing with seven points on 3-for-17 shooting. He made up for some of it on the glass, however, matching his season high with 16 rebounds and three blocked shots. Parker shot 1-for-10 while playing 29 minutes and scoring four points. He put up a similar dud last week against the Thunder, missing five of six field-goal attempts and scoring two points in the 100-88 loss that will probably prevent the Spurs from getting the No. 1 seed in the West.

GOOD MOVE: Popovich will always do what's best for his team, regardless of what others think. That's why he didn't hesitate to intentionally foul Howard with 2:25 left in the third quarter and the Spurs trailing by two. Despite loud boos from the crowd, Popovich went with that strategy five times in the final minutes of the quarter and Howard responded by missing 6 of his 10 from the line. When the quarter ended, the score was tied at 61. D'Antoni then kept Howard on the bench the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, which was when the Lakers were able to stretch their lead to nine and then 11 on Howard's tip in with four minutes left.

BAD MOVE: In such a big game for the Spurs, they sure didn't begin either half looking very hungry. The Lakers grabbed five of their 16 offensive rebounds in the game's first 1:23 and the Spurs didn't make their first field goal until 3:19 expired. They came out in the second half of a tied game and missed their first six shots, allowing the Lakers to jump out to a six-point lead and further build their confidence.

NOTABLE: Duncan passed Charles Barkley for 22nd on the list of all-time NBA scorers. ... The Lakers played their seventh consecutive game without starting point guard Steve Nash, who is sidelined with hip and hamstring injuries. Nash said he hopes to be back for Wednesday's regular-season finale against the visiting Rockets. A loss by the Jazz on Monday in Minnesota will clinch a playoff spot for the Lakers. The Spurs need to win their final two games and have the Thunder lose their last two to get the No. 1 seed in the West.
