Trail Blazers-Nuggets Preview

While they lost their chance to finish as the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, the Denver Nuggets still have plenty left to play for during the final week of the season.

Still fighting for home-court advantage in the first round, the Nuggets will try to set franchise records with their 37th home win and 55th victory overall on Sunday when they take on the free-falling Portland Trail Blazers.

Denver (54-25) hopes to bounce back with its sixth win in seven games after failing to set the single-season franchise win mark in a 108-105 overtime loss at Dallas on Friday.

The Nuggets have finished with 54 wins twice previously, the last time with Carmelo Anthony leading the way in 2008-09.

The loss eliminated them from the race for second in the West, but they are still battling Memphis and the Los Angeles Clippers for home court in the opening round.

"I'm not going to overreact to anything other than we have three games left," coach George Karl said. "I think we all want third. But if we get fourth or fifth, we've had a helluva year and we'll get ready to go play in the playoffs."

Karl's club appears to have a strong opportunity to get back on track against the visiting Blazers, losers of 10 straight overall and 23 of their last 25 in Denver.

Denver, an NBA-best 36-3 at home, has won a franchise-record 21 straight games at the Pepsi Center by an average of 12.2 points. The Nuggets are trying to surpass their best home record of 36-5 established in 1976-77.

Although forward Danilo Gallinari (knee) is out for the season, leading scorer Ty Lawson returned on Friday after missing five games with a right plantar fasciitis tear and scored 13 on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench.

Lawson has played well in this series, totaling 54 points and 18 assists while making 22 of 41 from the field in the last two meetings.

Wilson Chandler and Corey Brewer have helped carry the load without Gallinari. Chandler has averaged 22.7 over his last three games, while Brewer has scored 22.8 per game in his last four.

Chandler hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 14.9 seconds remaining in overtime in the Nuggets' 115-111 home win over the Blazers on Jan. 15.

The Nuggets have scored 109.3 per game on 49.7 percent shooting during their home win streak and should be able to maintain that pace against the Blazers, who have allowed an average of 108.1 points on 51.7 percent shooting during their skid.

Portland (33-46), which hasn't won since March 22, was outscored 26-7 in the third quarter on Friday in a 106-90 home loss to Oklahoma City. The 10-game losing streak is the franchise's longest since dropping 11 straight in 2005-06.

"The third quarter, our offense was ground down," coach Terry Stotts said. "We stopped moving the ball. We didn't create shots and we were loose with the turnovers. It was a bad combination."

While J.J. Hickson returned to the lineup after missing a game with a sore lower back, Portland is expected to be without starters Wesley Matthews (right ankle) and Nicolas Batum (right shoulder) again in this contest.

Hickson has played well in this series, averaging 18.3 points and 15.0 rebounds while shooting 57.6 percent in the three games.

The Blazers have scored 93.2 per game during their lengthy slump, but averaged 107.0 while losing two of three close games against the Nuggets.

Nuggets set NBA franchise mark with 55th win

DENVER (AP) The Denver Nuggets are getting good at bittersweet moments.

Andre Iguodala scored 28 points and the Nuggets set an NBA franchise record with their 55th win Sunday, beating the short-handed Portland Trail Blazers 118-109 but losing another starter.

On the day Ty Lawson (right heel) returned to Denver's starting lineup for the first time since March 27 and played an encouraging 31 minutes, forward Kenneth Faried sprained his left ankle in the opening minutes while driving for a layup and didn't return.

"We're dropping like flies, man," Lawson said. "Well, it's not too serious, I heard, so he might be out for a week or so. He's a tough guy."

Although X-rays were negative, coach George Karl stressed that he didn't want to guess about Faried's availability for the playoffs that start next weekend until after his top rebounder goes for an MRI on Monday.

The Nuggets tweeted this quote from Faried two hours after the game: "Extremely scared. I never felt a pain like that a day in my life." He also said he'd be ready for the playoffs: "I know I will be out there. If I can walk, I can play."

Faried crumpled to the floor, covering his face and holding his left ankle as the Nuggets called a timeout less than three minutes into the game. The Pepsi Center crowd grew quiet - the way it had 10 days earlier when forward Danilo Gallinari blew out his left ACL driving to the same hoop against Dallas.

In an all-too-familiar sight, Quincy Miller and Anthony Randolph helped their teammate as he gingerly walked off the court, a towel covering his face. Randolph would get some of Faried's minutes and finish with 18 points.

Faried was averaging 11.7 points and a team-best 9.3 rebounds.

"I felt like we were snakebit or bad luck had come our way, our karma had turned the wrong way," Karl said. "I kind of saw it and then when he stayed down, I was worried. I don't think anything's broken. But we'll find out much more tomorrow."

As they did when Gallinari went down, the Nuggets rallied behind their latest fallen starter, and grabbed a piece of history with their 55th win.

The Nuggets, who went 54-28 in both 1987-88 and 2008-09, also extended their franchise-best winning streak at home to 22 straight games but more importantly they moved a game ahead of the Clippers and Grizzlies in the race for the third seed in the Western Conference.

The Nuggets (55-25) can clinch home-court advantage in the first round with a win at Milwaukee on Monday night or a victory over Phoenix at home on Wednesday night.

"It's a `wow' year for me," Karl said. "I've had a few before. I haven't had one since I was in Seattle, though. I've had the privilege to be on teams that won 60 a couple of times. That's pretty good. Fifty-five is the next-best thing.

"I do idealistic and realistic predictions and I thought the most we could squeeze out this year was 54, so we're above and beyond. I admire how much guys have stayed in this season and fought through some tough moments and continue to improve. So, it's a pretty special year."

Karl was thrilled at Lawson's return to the starting lineup. He had 12 points and 10 assists less than 48 hours after playing 20 minutes at Dallas.

"I don't think I could have asked for a better script out of Ty these last two games," Karl said.

Lawson said he's completely confident in his right heel now.

"Oh yeah, I think so. I pushed off it actually today going to the basket a couple of times, so I think I'm confident and just probably one or two more games I'll be back to regular," he said.

Iguodala also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out nine assists, blocked three shots and had three steals to go with his 28 points, marking the first time in his career he'd posted those numbers in a game.

And rookie Evan Fournier scored 24 points in his second career start, sinking a pair of crucial 3-pointers in the closing minutes after the Trail Blazers had cut a 20-point deficit to 104-101 with 3:33 left.

Portland was without three starters: LaMarcus Aldridge (right ankle), Wesley Matthews (right ankle) and Nicolas Batum (right shoulder), so coach Terry Stotts started four rookies, including Damian Lillard, who led the Trail Blazers with 30 points but also had eight of their 23 turnovers as Portland lost its 11th straight.

After Denver built a seemingly safe 83-63 lead, the Blazers made a game of it. J.J. Hickson's free throw with 3:33 left made it 104-101, but that was as close as it got. It was 106-102 when Lawson sank two free throws and Fournier swished a 3-pointer from the left corner to give Denver some breathing room. Fournier's 3-pointer from the other side made it 118-107, and their 55th win was secure.

"Ty Lawson just made some plays that we didn't have answers for," Stotts said. "But we played much better in the second half."

Karl would have preferred a blowout but said the tight game might pay dividends down the road, especially with so many backups playing key roles down the stretch.

With Gallinari done for the season and uncertainty surrounding Faried, the Nuggets' hopes of a strong playoff run will depend on what they get out of their deep lineup.

"It's a really good team," Iguodala said. "And it's been a really good year for us. But we don't want to get satisfied. We've still got work to do. We can't just settle for 55. We've got to try to get to 57."

With 55 wins, Lawson said this team has to be considered among the best in franchise history, "so hopefully it translates to the playoffs and we try to do what no Nuggets have ever done."

Notes: By improving to an NBA-best 37-3 at home, they also set a record Sunday for most home wins in a season since joining the NBA 37 years ago. Denver went 36-5 at home under Larry Brown in 1976-77. ... Portland has lost nine straight and 23 of its last 25 games in Denver.

THE FACTS: Andre Iguodala had another solid all-around game with 28 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and the Denver Nuggets set an NBA franchise record in wins with a 118-109 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday.

Rookie Evan Fournier had 24 points and Ty Lawson returned to the starting lineup with 12 points and 10 assists for the Nuggets, who won their 55th game of the season.

It's a potentially costly win for the playoff-bound Nuggets. Starting forward and leading rebounder Kenneth Faried suffered a severely sprained left ankle early in the game. While X-rays were negative and he is listed as day-to-day, he did not make the trip to Milwaukee for Monday's game and his status for the start of the playoffs Saturday is undetermined.

It's the second time in 10 days Denver has seen a player crumble on the court. Danilo Gallinari tore the ACL in his left knee against Dallas and is lost for the season.

Still, the Nuggets had more than enough to send the Trail Blazers to their 11th straight loss. Damian Lillard led Portland with 30 points, and J.J. Hickson had 19 points and nine rebounds.

Denver kept its hold on third place in the Western Conference, a game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers with two games to go. The Nuggets need to win both games to ensure they are the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.

QUOTABLE: "Usually when you're 55 you separate yourself, so I'm still my nervous self and worried self. You have four teams you could play and it probably won't be determined until Wednesday at 8 or 9 o'clock."

THE STAT: The Nuggets set an NBA franchise record for home wins with 37 while extending their winning streak at Pepsi Center to 22.

TURNING POINT: The Nuggets led by 20 in the third quarter but a 12-2 Portland run made it a 100-96 game midway through the fourth. The Blazers got within three with 3:33 left but Lawson hit two free throws and Fournier hit a 3-pointer from the wing to push the advantage to 111-102 with 2:40 left.

QUOTABLE II: "We had a couple of turnovers down the stretch that they capitalized on. It seemed like every time we got within a few points they hit a three or got a steal. They did a good job answering our calls."

HOT: Iguodala has stepped up in the last two weeks to give Denver a much-needed boost as the injuries have hit. In his last five games he is averaging 16.8 points, 9.4 assists and 8.2 rebounds, including a triple-double against San Antonio on Wednesday.

NOT: Nuggets veteran Andre Miller had an off night. He scored just two points and had just one assist in 19 minutes.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The Nuggets hosted Military Appreciation Day and honored current and former members of the armed services throughout the game.

GOOD MOVE: The Nuggets didn't lose their focus after Faried went down with his ankle injury just 2:40 into the game. They quickly built a double-digit lead and took control of the game.

BAD MOVE: Not much Terry Stotts can do when three of his best players are out with injuries. The Blazers look destined to match the franchise record of 13 losses with games remaining at the Clippers and home to Golden State.

QUOTABLE IV: "We played much better in the second half. The turnovers were a concern, especially in the first half. I liked the way we stayed with it in the second half, cut it to four, but Ty Lawson just made some plays we didn't have answers for."

ROOKIE WATCH: The Trail Blazers started four rookies and Hickson. With Fournier in the starting lineup for the Nuggets, half of the players on the floor at the tip were rookies. The young guys played well, combining for 90 points between them.

NOTABLE: The 55 wins are one better than the previous NBA mark for the franchise, which was set in 1987-88 and matched in 2008-09. ... The Nuggets have beaten the Blazers nine straight times at Pepsi Center and 23 of the last 25 in Denver. ... Portland is two losses shy of the franchise record for most consecutive losses.
