The Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers are both playing well as the season draws to a close - and they both have eyes on the same playoff spot.

With a week until the postseason begins, Memphis hosts Los Angeles on Saturday night in a crucial matchup between teams jockeying for home-court advantage in the first round.

The Grizzlies (54-25) are currently tied with the Nuggets for third place in the West, though Denver holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Clippers are right behind them at 53-26, but as a division champion they can't be seeded lower than fourth - though they'd still need a better record than the No. 5 seed to have home-court in that scenario.

Memphis has won seven of eight overall and 13 straight at home, and a victory Saturday would pull it within one game of matching the franchise record for consecutive home wins, a 15-game run bridging last season with this one.

They've made their mark all season long with defense, leading the league by allowing 89.4 points per game while also ranking among the leaders by holding opponents to 43.8 percent shooting. They've been especially stingy in three straight victories, holding teams to an average of 80.0 points on 34.9 percent shooting.

Houston came into Friday's game leading the league with 106.2 points per game, but Memphis held the Rockets to a season-low 31.1 percent shooting in an 82-78 win.

"All the guys (on our team) are just on the same page," guard Tony Allen told the league's official website after he and Tayshaun Prince helped hold James Harden to 0-for-7 shooting in the fourth quarter.

"When you've got five guys out there with the same goal, fighting hard and playing together, this is the outcome - you get the win."

The Clippers have won four in a row after a 96-93 victory at New Orleans on Friday that saw them chip away at a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Chris Paul helped engineer a late outburst, scoring eight of his 17 points in the final minute as Los Angeles scored on its final 11 possessions.

"We didn't have much energy tonight. That starts with me. I was dead early," said Paul, who also had 14 assists for his 30th double-double - the most among guards. "We've got to win games like this. We've got to win ugly games. It's not always going to be pretty."

Los Angeles likely won't be particularly thrilled to face such a strong defensive unit after going 7 for 26 from 3-point range Friday. The Grizzlies are also slightly healthier than they have been as both Jerryd Bayless (knee) and Darrell Arthur (back) returned at Houston after missing the previous two games.

The Clippers have won two of three in the season series, though the Grizzlies claimed a 96-85 victory in the most recent matchup on March 13 - just their second win in the last eight regular-season meetings.

Mike Conley is averaging 20.2 points on 54.5 percent shooting over his last six games but has struggled recently against the Clippers, averaging 9.2 points on 32.8 percent shooting in six regular-season games since the start of last season.

Memphis hasn't lost at FedExForum since a 96-90 defeat to Phoenix on Feb. 5.

Clippers edge Grizzlies 91-87 to win season series

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Los Angeles Clippers circled their final regular season game in Memphis as a huge opportunity to control home-court advantage in the postseason.

And they gained an edge by beating a Grizzlies team they could face next week in the opening round of the playoffs.

Chris Paul hit a free throw with 18.3 seconds left, and the Clippers edged the Grizzlies 91-87 Saturday night in a game before a sellout crowd soaked with playoff intensity.

"Now we control our own destiny," Paul said. "Before this, we had certain things that had to happen in order for us to move up. Now, if we want home court, we control it."

The Clippers won their fifth straight overall and took the season series 3-1 providing them the tiebreaking edge with both teams holding 54-26 records. Memphis held home-court advantage in the first-round series between the teams last year, and Los Angeles won Game 7 on the Grizzlies' home floor to advance.

This game puts them both one-half game behind Denver for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.

Clippers forward Blake Griffin said they talked all week about this game and how much they want home-court advantage.

"I like how we've played when we've come here," Griffin said. "Having home-court advantage is a plus on top of that."

DeAndre Jordan led the Clippers with 16 points, all in the first half. Paul finished with 13, Griffin had 12 and Willie Green 10.

Marc Gasol had 18 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists for Memphis. Zach Randolph finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Tayshaun Prince scored 13, and Mike Conley added 12 points and six assists.

Memphis came in with a one-game lead over the Clippers for the chance to start the postseason with home-court advantage and had won seven of its last eight. The Grizzlies lost that edge when they went cold for a couple stretches in the fourth quarter, including the last 3:33 when they scored only on Randolph's fallaway jumper with 23.5 seconds left.

"It's real frustrating because we needed this game," Randolph said. "But it is what it is. The real season starts next week, and we got to be ready whoever it may be. We just got to have our confidence to go in there whoever's here and be ready."

This game had all the intensity of the postseason with 15 ties, 10 lead changes and neither team leading by double digits.

"It was like the appetizer," Gasol said of this game with the postseason looming.

The Clippers had their biggest advantage at nine in the fourth quarter, using a 14-0 run to take control of the game for good. Memphis whittled that down to one point twice down the stretch. After Paul split a pair of free throws with 18.3 seconds left, Conley tried to past into the post and Griffin got a hand on the ball, tipping it to Matt Barnes with 3.8 seconds to go.

"You kind of knew it was coming inside, so I just worked my way around and was fortunate to get a hand on it," Griffin said. "I wish I could say I read it even more than that, and did something really cool, but nah, that was it."

Two free throws by Jamal Crawford provided the final score.

Everything about the game was close with the Grizzlies having a 48-46 edge in scoring in the paint and a 20-17 advantage on second-chance points, although the Clippers outrebounded Memphis 45-43. The Grizzlies had a 12-11 edge on fast-break points, but Los Angeles outscored Memphis 23-14 in the fourth.

"They're a great team," Crawford said. "They're coached very well. They play tough basketball. They grind it out. Every game against them has been tough. If we happen to see these guys in the playoffs, we're sure it will be a tough series again."

Memphis finished the third with five straight points to take its biggest lead at 73-68 heading to the fourth quarter. The Clippers answered with 14 straight points keyed by five apiece by Grant Hill and Eric Bledsoe. Ryan Hollins capped the spurt with a dunk for an 86-77 lead with 6:17 left.

The Grizzlies went scoreless for 3 1/2 minutes during that stretch before Randolph finally had a putback with 6:01 remaining for the first of eight consecutive points. The last was a free throw by Conley on a technical on Hill for a defensive 3-second call with 3:34 left, pulling Memphis to 86-85. Paul then hit a long 3-pointer with 3:00 to go to give the Clippers enough of a buffer.

NOTES: The Clippers improved to 41-4 when leading after the first quarter this season. ... The teams had their sloppy moments at times, but they each had only three turnovers apiece in the second half. ... The loss snapped Memphis' 13-game home winning streak with the Clippers handing the Grizzlies' their first home loss since Feb. 5 against Phoenix. ... The Grizzlies also missed a chance to set a franchise record for home wins. They are stuck at 31-9 with the season finale against Utah on Wednesday night their last chance to top the 31-10 mark of the 2003-04 squad. ... The Clippers now have won two straight road games, adding to their team record with a 23rd road win this season. .. Memphis went 6 of 21 in the fourth quarter. ... Memphis lost for the first time with a sellout crowd and now is 5-1 in such games.

THE FACTS: The Los Angeles Clippers made just one field goal over the final six minutes, but it was enough to hold off the cold-shooting Memphis Grizzlies 91-87 Saturday night at FedExForum in what very well could have been a preview of a first-round playoff series between the two teams.

DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 12 rebounds for L.A. (54-26), Chris Paul added 13 points and the Clippers' bench scored 12 points during a key 14-0 fourth-quarter scoring run. The Clippers took the regular-season series against the Grizzlies 3-1, snapped Memphis' 13-game home winning streak and moved into a tie in the Western Conference standings with Memphis (54-26) with two games to play.

QUOTABLE: "It was everybody -- [Eric Bledsoe], Lamar [Odom], Ryan [Hollins], Jamal [Crawford]. The depth really helped us tonight. You know, the old man out there, Grant Hill, he hit a couple of big shots and had a couple of blocks for us so [I'm] really proud of him. He stays ready."

THE STAT: The Clippers' reserves were the difference Saturday, outscoring the Grizzlies' bench 40-21. Crawford and Bledsoe led the way, scoring nine points apiece, including five from Bledsoe during the 14-0 scoring run in the fourth.

TURNING POINT: Memphis took its biggest lead of the game with 9:32 left on a Darrell Arthur bucket that made it 77-72. But Hill, the 40-year-old reserve forward, scored five straight points on a 3-pointer and putback jumper to tie the game. Hill's back-to-back buckets sparked a 14-0 scoring run in the final period that put the Clippers ahead 86-77. Memphis pulled within one twice over the final 3:34, but couldn't overcome a frigid 6-for-21 fourth-quarter shooting effort.

QUOTABLE II: "I think it's very similar to last season. If we do play those guys, we understand them and they understand how we play. We understand it's going to be a dogfight and it could go either way."

HOT: Jordan scored the Clippers' first eight points Saturday and finished 8-for-13 from the field. He has made 90 of his 119 field-goal attempts since the All-Star break (75.6 percent).

NOT: Though Crawford and Bledsoe made some key buckets, the pair went a combined 5-for-17 from the field. The Grizzlies' bench, meanwhile, combined to go 8-for-24, with reserve guard Jerryd Bayless going 3-for-10 for for eight points.

NOTABLE: Clippers starting forward Caron Butler played nine first-quarter minutes Saturday and did not return to the game due to a sore right knee. ... Grizzlies center Marc Gasol had a standout all-around performance, contributing a game-high 18 points on 7-for-14 shooting to go with a season-high-tying 15 rebounds and seven assists. ... Zach Randolph registered his 44th double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 boards. ... The win dropped Memphis to fifth place behind the fourth-place Clippers in the Western Conference standings with Los Angeles having earned the tiebreaker by taking the season series against the Grizzlies 3-1. ... Before Saturday's home loss, Memphis hadn't dropped a home game since Feb. 5 against Phoenix.
