Timberwolves-Jazz Preview

The Utah Jazz held the final playoff spot in the Western Conference heading into their last game. They could be on the verge of postseason elimination following their next contest.

Utah will try to prevent that from happening in Friday night's home finale as it opens a stretch of two straight against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

With a half-game lead over the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth seed, the Jazz (41-38) lost for just the second time in nine games Tuesday, 90-80 to Oklahoma City. The defeat, coupled with the Lakers' victory over New Orleans that night, dropped Utah into ninth.

The Jazz are now a full game off the Lakers' pace following Los Angeles' 113-106 win at Portland on Wednesday.

"We still got a chance," point guard Mo Williams said Tuesday after leading the Jazz with 19 points and seven assists. "I'm not sitting here saying it's over. We got three games left. We've got to go get them."

If the Jazz lose Friday and Los Angeles defeats Golden State, Utah will be one loss or one Lakers win from elimination. However, a Jazz victory and a Los Angeles defeat would put Utah back in control of the race as it's won two of three head-to-head matchups.

The Jazz will try to put pressure on the Lakers, who play later Friday, with a seventh straight home win over the Timberwolves (29-49). Utah, a 106-84 winner Jan. 2 in Minnesota's only visit to Salt Lake City this season, has won nine of 11 in this series following a 97-93 victory Feb. 13.

Still, Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin is not overlooking the Timberwolves.

"They're not going to lay down and let us have it," he said. "... We need to go out and try to win these last three ballgames."

More offensive efficiency would help. Since averaging 108.6 points and shooting 53.0 percent during a five-game winning streak, the Jazz have scored 92.0 and shot 45.4 percent in their last four.

That kind of accuracy from the floor would be a huge improvement for Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio, who has gone 6 of 41 (14.6) during the team's 1-3 stretch. That isn't the only issue for Minnesota, which has surrendered more than 100 points in three consecutive games for the first time since a four-game stretch from Feb. 4-10.

Minnesota lost 111-95 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, allowing them to shoot 57.1 percent while making 38.9 percent itself.

"They were pushing the ball aggressively and they got a lot of points on the fast break and playing quick," Rubio said. "We couldn't stop it ..."

The Jazz had trouble slowing down Rubio and Derrick Williams on Feb. 13, with Rubio totaling 18 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds and Williams scoring 24 points with a career-best 16 rebounds.

Utah has a chance to finish with 30 home wins for the first time since going 32-9 in 2009-10.

The Timberwolves, 10-29 on the road, have dropped the first two games of their trip after winning a season-best three straight away from Minneapolis. They'll host Phoenix on Saturday before the Jazz come to town.

Jefferson's 40 lift Jazz over Wolves, 107-100

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Al Jefferson took it upon himself to make sure the Utah Jazz didn't lose ground in the playoff race.

"I remember being in that zone many times before, but tonight it was all about the playoffs to me," Jefferson said after scoring 40 points in Utah's 107-100 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.

"I just kept telling myself, talking to myself: We got to do it, start now, start with me, not only on the offense but on the defense, too. That's what I kept telling myself."

Jefferson tied a career high by scoring 40 for the first time since 2008. He broke his career mark with 19 field goals, the last coming on a clutch 14-footer with 39 seconds left that gave the Jazz a 101-98 lead.

Jefferson acknowledged he almost lost control of the ball, with the Timberwolves throwing a double-team at him and Ricky Rubio poking at the ball.

"I knew if I ever got control of it, there will have to be a shot," Jefferson said, knowing time was running out. "That's a shot that I'm real comfortable with on the move. I just let it go."

Derrick Favors blocked J.J. Barea's 3-point shot on the ensuing possession. Mo Williams sank four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for Utah (42-38).

"Unbelievable," Jazz guard Randy Foye said of Jefferson's 19-of-27 shooting night. "There's only one word you can say. I know a lot of other guys are more dynamic at dunking the ball, but come on, man. If you want somebody to throw the ball into and get you a bucket, when he's double-teamed and can score on a double-team, there's nobody like Al."

Jefferson also had 13 rebounds and a season-high six assists.

It helped that Jefferson's teammates started knocking down outside shots.

Foye hit 2 of 3 in the fourth quarter and 5 of 7 overall to finish with 16 points for Utah.

"I hope I hit six every night," said Foye, who owns the Jazz franchise record for 3s in a season. "I want to be unconscious every night. I don't want there to be one night where I don't help my team."

Jefferson scored 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting in the third to turn a seven-point deficit into an 82-81 lead entering the fourth.

After Rubio's back-to-back 3-pointers gave Minnesota a 98-97 lead with 3:52 left, Jefferson followed with an 8-footer then the clutch mid-range jumper to win it.

It didn't help Minnesota that the injury-plagued Timberwolves were without starting center Nikola Pekovic because of left calf contusion. Greg Steimsma started in his place, opened 1 of 5 and finished with 10 points.

"He made a lot of shots, but yes, he is physical," Minnesota coach Rick Adelman said of Jefferson. "All I had was Greg. We really had nobody else to guard him. Greg probably got a little tired, but Al made a lot of jump shots tonight, too. He faced up and knocked down shots."

The Jazz have two games left, and need to win out and hope the Lakers lose to either San Antonio or Dallas after their wild two-point win late Friday over Golden State. The Lakers said afterward that Kobe Bryant probably tore a tendon late in the game and would have an MRI on Saturday.

"The playoffs started a month ago for us," Jefferson said.

It continues Monday, against the same Minnesota team.

"Focus. Focus," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "They play well at home. They have great fans in Minnesota. They're really going to be hyped for this game. They know how important it is for us. So that's really going to motivate them to be spoilers, so we want to come in focused and ready to play."

This one was in Salt Lake City, where the Timberwolves have lost seven straight.

When Gordon Hayward's 33-footer banked in at the buzzer to give Utah a 30-22 lead after one, Utah looked well on its way to its 30th home victory.

But backup Barea, the smallest player on the court at 6-foot, came up big for the Timberwolves. He scored 12 straight for Minnesota to open the second quarter, starting with back-to-back 3-pointers and a driving layup that tied it at 32 with 10:03 left in the half. He finished with a season-high 23 points for Minnesota (29-50).

"He's good, a little feisty guy," Foye said. "He's strong. He's really smart and he's a good player. He's won a championship before so he knows what it takes."

That feistiness showed up late.

The Jazz led 97-90 on Jefferson's 8-footer, only to see Minnesota score five points on one possession. After a missed Jazz shot, Derrick Favors was called for a flagrant foul for shoving Barea out of his way and to the ground with 4:49 left. Barea sank both free throws, then Rubio hit a 3-pointer. Rubio hit another 3 on the next possession to give Minnesota a 98-97 lead with 3:52 remaining, setting the stage for Jefferson's heroics.

NOTES: Andrei Kirilenko, who helped guide the Jazz to six playoff appearances in 10 seasons before leaving as a free agent two years ago, acknowledged before the game he hopes the Jazz make it to the playoffs this season. "We know the situation the Jazz (are) in," Kirilenko said of battling the Lakers for the final spot. "It's not that we're going to come and try to help the Jazz. I can cheer for the Jazz but not against the Minnesota Timberwolves. We are going to try to do our best and try to beat Utah. Other than that I will cheer for them to be in the playoffs." ... A special ceremony is planned for Wednesday in Minnesota for Adelman's 1,000th victory. ... The Jazz had two days rest before Friday's game, while Minnesota was playing its third game in four nights. "And tomorrow will be our fourth game in (five) nights and the team we play (Phoenix) is there waiting for us," Adelman said. " I don't know, ask the schedule maker. It makes no sense to me. You can see it's going to happen once in a while, but for us it's happening all the time. It's the second time in four, five nights in the last 2 1/2 weeks of the season. But it's what it is. You've got to go out and play. You can't worry about it. If we were in a playoff chase, it would be even more of a disadvantage." ... The Timberwolves shot 61.1 percent in the second quarter.

THE FACTS: If it was Al Jefferson's final home game in a Utah Jazz uniform, he sent fans away with something to remember.

Jefferson tied a career-high with 40 points and had 13 rebounds and six assists to keep the Jazz in playoff contention with a 107-100 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night. Utah trails the Los Angeles Lakers by a half-game for the Western Conference's final playoff spot. The Lakers are playing Golden State in a late game on Friday.

Jefferson, who will be a free agent after the season, scored 29 of his points in the second half in Utah's regular season home finale. Mo Williams and Randy Foye each scored 16 for the Jazz.

Minnesota center Nikola Pekovic, the reigning Western Conference Player of the Week, was a late scratch because of a calf contusion. Greg Stiemsma started in his place, played 41 minutes and recorded 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

J.J. Barea scored a team-high 23 points for the Timberwolves.

QUOTABLE: "I felt like it started with me. I felt like, no disrespect to them, that I had the advantage on the block because they were trying to guard me one-on-one. I figured if I kept doing my job on the block I would get my teammates open shots. I think toward the third quarter is when they really started to try to double-team me and that's when (Foye) and them got some big shots. I just felt it started with me."

THE STAT: When the Jazz outscore their opponent in the paint, it usually translates into a win for Utah. The Jazz, with a big advantage inside due to Minnesota's key injuries and Jefferson doing most of the work, outscored the Timberwolves 44-32 in the paint. Utah improved to 28-8 when it has more points in the paint than its opponent.

TURNING POINT: The Jazz were down a point with 3:52 remaining, but closed the game on a 10-2 run to put it away. Jefferson (who else) made the go-ahead jumper to give Utah a 99-98 lead. He then hit a jumper before Williams iced the contest with six free throws. The Jazz also turned up their intensity on defense as Minnesota missed six consecutive shots while falling behind 103-98. The Timberwolves missed eight of their last nine shots with the one made being credited to Ricky Rubio thanks to a goaltending call on Derrick Favors.

HOT: Jefferson had perhaps his best all-around game in a Jazz uniform. He sank 19 shots to set a career-high for field goals made. He worked for his points as well as he attempted just two free throws. The Jazz shot a season-high 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from 3-point range. Foye found what had been a missing shooting touch as he shot 5-for-7 from 3-point range. He also helped slow Barea with solid defense on him in the fourth quarter. Alec Burks returned for the Jazz after missing two games because of a sprained ankle and played well. He had seven points and four rebounds in 19 minutes. Barea got the Timberwolves in the game after a slow start. He made his first five shots and scored 11 straight points during the second quarter.

NOT: Williams helped clinch the game with six free throws, but he also took a couple of questionable shots in the fourth quarter. He missed a runner and a long jumper on two different possessions with Utah clinging to a 99-98 lead and they could have been costly. Barea, after making his first five shots, missed eight of his last nine. Alexey Shved had a team-high five assists, but shot just 1-for-5.

QUOTABLE II: "That's my job. You got a big guy that plays inside like that and is such a force it makes my job that much easier. He was on a roll tonight and I just waited for them to double him and when they doubled him I made them pay."

GOOD MOVE: Forget the Jazz's usual style of offense of cutting to the basket and making extra passes. They chose to dump the ball into Jefferson and get out of his way -- and it couldn't have worked better. Sensing their big man was having a career night, the Jazz ran their offense through Jefferson. He responded by carrying Utah. He had 19 of the team's 29 points in the third quarter. The Timberwolves threw different looks at him, including double teams, and Jefferson made them pay for it. He found open teammates and his six assists tied a season-high.

BAD MOVE: Favors committed a flagrant foul on Barea and it couldn't have come at a worse time. Just as the Jazz were starting to pull away, having taken a 97-90 lead with 5:19 remaining, Favors let his emotions get the best of him. After a Jefferson miss, he got tangled with Barea as he began to run to get back on defense. He used his forearm to push Barea out of the way and the Minnesota guard went to the ground. Surely, Barea plays at 100 miles per hour at all times and is an irritant to opponents, but Favors needed to keep his head. The play ignited the Timberwolves as Barea made both free throws and Rubio hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Minnesota in the lead at 98-97 with 3:52 left in the game.

NOTABLE: Utah finished with a 30-11 home record. The two teams play again in Minnesota on Monday. The Timberwolves went winless on a three-game road trip, losing the three games by an average of 13 points. The Jazz have defeated Minnesota seven straight times in Utah. Former Jazzman Andrei Kirilenko had eight points, three assists and three rebounds in his second game in Utah in an opposing uniform. Utah's Paul Millsap, a free agent at the end of the season, didn't play in the fourth quarter and had 10 points in 24 minutes.
