Thunder-Warriors Preview

The Oklahoma City Thunder's most recent victory helped the Golden State Warriors clinch their first playoff berth in six seasons.

The Thunder can help themselves by beating the Warriors for the seventh time in eight meetings Thursday night as they continue their quest for the top seed in the Western Conference.

Oklahoma City (57-21), locked in a tight race with San Antonio for home-court advantage throughout the West playoffs, defeated Utah 90-80 on Tuesday. That game went final around halftime of Golden State's matchup with Minnesota.

Warriors coach Mark Jackson was informed during the break of the Thunder's victory. After relaying the message to his team, it ran away with a 105-89 win that allowed it to secure the franchise's first playoff appearance since 2006-07.

"He just told us we're 24 minutes from accomplishing what some of us have been waiting for our whole career," said forward David Lee, who recorded his NBA-leading 53rd double-double and is heading to the postseason for the first time in his eight-year career. "It feels great, but we want more."

The Warriors (45-33) have won four of five and lead Houston by one game for the No. 6 seed.

"People questioned us, and they should have. People doubted us, and they should have," an emotional Jackson said. "They underestimated the heart, the desire, the work ethic, the determination, the willingness to put in the time.

"I told them ... 'This is not our final destination. Celebrate that we got here, but this is not our final destination.'"

The Thunder also have their sights set on a deep playoff run after falling to Miami in the NBA Finals last season.

Russell Westbrook scored 25 points and Kevin Durant had 21 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists Tuesday, though coach Scott Brooks was more impressed with his team's defense.

Oklahoma City has held six of its last nine opponents to fewer than 90 points and ranks second in the NBA in field-goal percentage defense at 42.5.

"The stats say we are the second-best defensive team in the league and I believe we are," Brooks said. "We lock in on that end of the floor but you have to be able to score also. We always have this little thing that we talk about: Let our defense score points for us."

Westbrook has averaged 28.3 points in four games this month and committed one turnover for the second straight contest.

"He doesn't get enough credit for his aggressive play," Brooks said. "He helps us win games - a lot of games and the way he plays. He attacks, he puts so much pressure on the defense."

Durant played more than 37 minutes against the Jazz and leads the league in that category. Brooks isn't worried.

"When you're 24 and have the energy he has, and the ability to play at the level he has, minutes is really not a factor," Brooks said. "We've never gone into a playoff series and said, `Man he's tired. He's beat up."'

Durant's 30.4 points per game in 20 career contests versus Golden State is his best average against any team. He scored 33 in a 104-99 loss Jan. 23 in the only meeting in California.

Thunder whip Warriors 116-97 behind Durant

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Russell Westbrook blocked Stephen Curry's layup, Kevin Durant corralled the ball and dribbled down court. He threw down a soaring dunk at full extension, then pretended to slice his throat and crossed his hands in prayer.

"Kill `em and pray for `em after the game," Durant said of his new celebration.

Durant finished with 31 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to help the Oklahoma City Thunder regain the Western Conference's best record with a 116-97 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night.

"It's nothing against the team I'm playing against," Durant said of his animated moves, adding that somebody encouraged him to do it following a highlight dunk. "Come out with a mindset and be friends after the game."

With Durant leading the way, that's just what the Thunder did.

Kevin Martin scored 23 points off the bench and Russell Westbrook added 18 points and nine assists for the Thunder, who moved a half-game ahead of idle San Antonio for the top seed. The Spurs split the season series with Oklahoma City, but the Thunder (58-21) own the tiebreaker because of its better conference record.

Oklahoma City ended a stretch of six games against playoffs teams 5-1.

"Our approach was to embrace the challenge," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "And I think our guys have done a good job of that."

Two nights after sealing the franchise's second playoff berth in 19 years, Golden State missed a chance to take the next step.

Curry scored 22 points and reserve Jarrett Jack had 19 points on a night the Warriors lost center Andrew Bogut to another injury. The 7-footer left in the first quarter with a sprained left ankle.

Warriors coach Mark Jackson said Bogut is not expected to make the trip to Los Angeles for Friday's night game against the Lakers.

"Even before that, they played playoff basketball and we didn't," Jackson said. "That was a team that's chasing the No. 1 seed and was trying to send a message, `Just in case I see you at some point down the road."'

The Warriors (45-34) are a mere half-game ahead of Houston for sixth place in the West. The Rockets hold the tiebreaker after winning three of four this season over Golden State, which looked every bit like a team at the back of the playoff pack against the defending conference champions.

At times, even in embarrassing fashion.

Serge Ibaka blocked Bogut's dunk attempt at the rim in the first quarter, then gave an extended finger wave that even drew roars from Golden State's 31st straight sellout crowd announced at 19,596. Ibaka ran down court to tip-back Durant's miss, then hit a 3-pointer and later dunked to put Oklahoma City ahead 22-15.

"To perform like that on our home court is tough to swallow," Curry said.

Ibaka finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Durant was 10 for 16 from the floor, helping the Thunder outshoot the Warriors 50.6 to 44 percent.

Bogut exited with 2:55 remaining in the quarter, went to the locker and did not return. The team said Bogut sprained his left ankle, which he broke in January of 2012 and underwent microfracture on last April.

In the meantime, Durant and Westbrook got rolling late in the second half, including that incredible series that led to Durant's dunk and will surely fill the highlights.

"When I said killed them, I mean our attitude was straight focused, laser-focused, ready to play every possession, locked in on every possession at both ends," Durant said. "We knew what we were playing for. We know every game is important. So we were locked in from the beginning. That's what we need to do."

The Thunder's defense smothered Golden State's shooters in the third quarter to put the game away. They started the third quarter on a 22-5 run, and they took a 94-73 lead on Durant's 3-pointer in the final minute of the third quarter.

Oklahoma City played the second half without its center, too, due to an injury that seems far less serious. Kendrick Perkins sat out the final 24 minutes because of right hamstring tightness, but said he'll be fine.

With the Thunder in full control, there was no need to play anyway.

The only drama left was whether Durant would get his second triple-double of the season against the Warriors. Instead, Brooks replaced Durant with 8:14 remaining with his team still up 20 points.

Durant recorded his first career triple-double in a 119-109 win over the Warriors in Oklahoma City on Nov. 18.

"He's one of the greatest players in the game," said Warriors reserve Draymond Green, who got turned around when Durant threw down his dunk. "We have to be more physical."

NOTES: Martin left in the fourth quarter with lower back tightness but said he'll be fine. ... The Thunder won the season-series 3-1. ... Curry joined Ray Allen (2005-06), Dennis Scott (1995-96) and George McCloud (1995-96) as the only players in NBA history to make at least 250 3-pointers in a season.

THE FACTS: Kevin Durant dropped 31 points in less than 35 minutes and nearly put together his fourth triple-double of the season in leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 116-97 romp against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday.

Durant, who hung a triple-double on the Warriors back in November, had 10 rebounds but just eight assists this time around. Kevin Martin had 23 points off the bench before leaving due to tightness in his right lower back.

Oklahoma City (58-21) moved a half-game clear of San Antonio (57-21) atop the Western Conference, although the Thunder hold the tiebreakers in the event of a head-to-head deadlock between those two clubs.

Golden State (45-34) saw their lead over Houston (44-34) shrink to a half-game in the race for the West's No. 6 seed despite 22 points and seven assists from Stephen Curry.

QUOTABLE: "Going into this streak, we knew that we were going to have to play much better. . . . Our approach to embrace the challenge, and I think our guys have done a good job with that."

THE STAT: Oklahoma City came into the game ranked 27th in the league in terms of assisted baskets, getting help on 56.3 percent of their field goals this season. But the Thunder's ball movement simply slaughtered Golden State on Thursday. Oklahoma City recorded 30 assists -- one off their season high -- on 42 buckets.

TURNING POINT: Golden State did well to stay within six points at the half, but Oklahoma City wasted no time in blowing things open to start the third quarter. A 9-2 run, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Thabo Sefolosha, built a 69-56 lead for the visitors, and they would go on to outscore the Warriors 36-23 for the quarter.

GOOD MOVE: Brooks wasn't afraid to switch up his primary assignment on Curry until he found something that worked. Russell Westbrook, who opened the game on Curry but handed off duties early on to Sefolosha, eventually won the job back -- just in time to impressively swat away Curry a pair of floaters with unbelievable recovery speed.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Westbrook's first block of Curry led to a coast-to-coast dash and massive, cloud-scraping dunk from Durant, who celebrated with a throat-slashing gesture and then clasped hands.

HOT, DEFENSIVELY: Westbrook's rejections were part of a pattern for the Thunder, who clamped down in the second half, allowing the Warriors to shoot only 38.5 percent from the floor, 28.6 percent on 3-pointers. All told, Oklahoma City had 10 blocks, 10 steals and 36 defensive rebounds -- while Golden State could only manage seven offensive boards.

HOT, OFFENSIVELY: Serge Ibaka went 6-for-7 in a 15-point first half, hammering down a couple of dunks and generally creating havoc against a Warriors defense that desperately missed the presence of center Andrew Bogut.

NOT: The Warriors had to make do without Bogut for much of the night. Bogut, who has been limited all season while recovering from off-season microfracture surgery in his left ankle, played just 9:05 in the first quarter before heading back to Golden State's locker room. The Warriors announced at halftime that Bogut had stuffered a sprained left ankle and would not return. A Twitter report by Warriors beat writer Marcus Thompson II said Bogut initially sprained the ankle Tuesday in the Warriors' playoff-clinching victory against Minnesota but played through it. The ankle was originally broken in January 2012 and required further surgery in April 2012, after Golden State acquired him from Milwaukee. The Warriors said no X-rays were taken because they were deemed unnecessary.

NOT, PART II: The Thunder also lost their starting center when Kendrick Perkins left 69 seconds into the third quarter with what the team called right hamstring tightness. He did not return, and his status for Oklahoma City's game in Portland on Friday is in question.

NOTABLE: The Thunder are now 26-3 when at least five players reach double figures in scoring. In addition to Durant, Martin and Ibaka, Westbrook had 18 points and Sefolosha 10. . . . Curry became the youngest player to hit for 250 3-pointers in a season. He now has 252, and needs 18 over his last three games to unseat record-holder Ray Allen. . . . David Lee had his league-leading 54th double-double, but it was an empty 13 points and 11 rebounds. . . . With Bogut out, seldom-used Warriors center Andris Biedrins saw his first game action since March 15, breaking a string of 11 games' worth of non-activity.
