Hornets-Suns Preview

The Phoenix Suns are finishing off one of the worst seasons in team history, and another defeat at home will give the club its longest-ever losing streak there.

Phoenix will try to avoid a seventh consecutive loss in the desert and ninth straight overall when they face the struggling New Orleans Hornets on Sunday night.

With six games left, the Suns (23-53) need to win out to avoid their lowest victory total in a non-shortened season since going 28-54 in 1987-88. Their frustrating 2012-13 got a little worse Friday when they shot a season-best 61.1 percent from the field and still lost 111-107 to Golden State.

"For us to shoot 61 percent and still lose is mind-boggling," interim coach Lindsey Hunter said, "but we had 22 turnovers in some crucial situations during the game. We got to keep working to clean those things up and try to take the little victories out of this and keep building."

The Suns have one home game left after Sunday, which might not be a bad thing. Phoenix has given up 111.8 points and 50.0 percent shooting in its last five home contests.

The team last dropped six straight on its home court Nov. 2-24, 1996, a skid that was part of a team-worst 0-13 losing streak.

Phoenix hasn't dropped nine in a row overall since then.

While the Suns are having problems at home, the Hornets (26-50) have dropped eight straight on the road after a 95-83 loss to Utah on Friday.

Losing four of five overall since winning three in a row is not the way coach Monty Williams wants to see the Hornets perform down the stretch.

"What kind of pro are you when it doesn't look like you're going to go to the playoffs?" he told the team's official website.

Anthony Davis could play in a big part in getting the Hornets into the postseason one day. He scored 24 points and added 11 boards Friday.

"The more time he plays, the better he's going to be," Jazz center Al Jefferson said. "It's going to be scary."

The Suns haven't seen Davis at his best. An ankle injury sidelined him for a 111-108 overtime loss at Phoenix on Nov. 23, and he scored eight points with one rebound in a 93-84 home victory over the Suns on Feb. 6.

Phoenix had taken four straight in the series.

Another strong effort from Michael Beasley could help the Suns win a third in a row at home over the Hornets. Beasley has 38 points in the last two games after scoring 25 off the bench on Friday.

"For him to come out and have two consecutive games where he is really, really good it is impressive and hopefully he can continue to do that," Hunter said.

Suns point guard Goran Dragic scored a season-high 32 points Friday.

New Orleans' Greivis Vazquez had then-career highs of 25 points and 14 assists Nov. 23. Teammate Ryan Anderson's 34 points and eight 3-pointers in that game were career bests.

Hornets send Suns to record 7th straight home loss

PHOENIX (AP) The New Orleans Hornets won on the road for the first time in almost two months.

And the Phoenix Suns lost at home - again.

Anthony Davis scored 20 points, Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson added 17 apiece and the Hornets handed the Suns their franchise-record seventh consecutive home loss, 95-92 on Sunday night.

Markieff Morris scored 18 points for the Suns, losers of a season-worst nine straight overall and 15 of their last 17. Luis Scola added 17 and Jared Dudley had 15.

The Suns, down by 16 with nine minutes to play, cut it to 85-82 on Goran Dragic's two free throws with 3:03 left. But Anderson's rebound basket and two free throws by Davis boosted it to 89-82 and the Hornets held on from there.

New Orleans snapped an eight-game road losing streak.

"It was good to get a win so people can stop talking about how many we lost on the road in a row," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "Our guys feel good about beating a team in their place."

Phoenix has made a lot of teams feel good recently at US Airways Center. The team's previous record for consecutive losses at home was six late in 1995-96 and again early in the 1996-97 season.

The streak can't get longer than eight this season because there's only one more home game.

"It's very tough," Scola said. "There's no reason why to be positive. So how are we going to stay positive? Nobody should be positive. We have to work hard. The way we do it is we realize that we have problems and that we need to fix them."

The Hornets outscored the Suns 35-19 in the third quarter. Phoenix was outscored 32-14 in its loss to Golden State on Friday night.

"We have to look deeper into it and see what's going on because it's like a trend for us," Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter said. "For a while the thing was closing out quarters for us. That started to be a trend, we couldn't close out quarters. Now it's like coming out (in the second half), we don't jump back into the game the way you're supposed to."

In the early stages of a 12-2 run, New Orleans took its first lead of the night at 51-49 on Davis' dunk. Anderson's 3-pointer capped the outburst and put the Hornets up 59-51 with 6:35 left in the quarter.

New Orleans scored the last six of the quarter, four by Brian Roberts and two by ex-Sun Robin Lopez, to lead 74-62 entering the fourth.

The Hornets kept it going to start the fourth, another former Phoenix player, Lou Amundson, dunked to make it a 13-3 run and put New Orleans ahead 81-65 with 9:06 to play.

The Suns mounted a 17-4 run, with Morris scoring eight to make it a three-point game with three minutes left. After Anderson's rebound and Davis' free throws, Dudley made two from the line to cut the lead to 89-84 with 1:44 to go.

But Gordon made two free throws, the Suns turned it over and New Orleans put it away from there.

"We are a young team and coach Monty tells us all the time how to handle situations," Davis said. "They are young, they run and they cut it to six I think (actually three). We just kept our composure and tried to execute our offense. We got a bucket and calmed the crowd down and got back to the flow of things."

Phoenix led the entire first half from the opening basket and was up 40-29 after Morris' 20-footer with 3:47 left in the second quarter. But the Hornets outscored the Suns 11-3 the rest of the half to cut the lead to 43-39 at the break.

After scoring in double digits four games in a row, including 25 points on Friday, Phoenix's Michael Beasley was 1 for 11 shooting for three points.

Notes: The Hornets last won a road game Feb. 11 at Detroit. ... New Orleans won the season series 2-1. ... The Suns were without C Jermaine O'Neal (bruised shin). ... Phoenix recalled Diante Garrett after he played one game for Bakersfield of the NBA Development League. He scored 32 points in a 106-105 victory that secured Bakersfield the No. 1 seed in the D-League playoffs. ... Phoenix plays four of its last five on the road. Its lone remaining home game is April 15 against Houston.

THE FACTS: Two lottery-bound teams, and their fans, got to see what a lottery prize looks like Sunday night in Phoenix.

Anthony Davis, the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft, scored a game-high 20 points as the New Orleans Hornets came from behind and rolled to a 95-92 win over the Suns.

Davis took just 10 shots in scoring 20 (or more) for the second straight game, a first for him.

"My teammates were finding me," Davis said.

"He took one bad shot, a crazy fade-away," coach Monty Williams said. "Otherwise, he was really efficient ... AD running the floor solves a lot of problems for our offense."

The Hornets, who have won five of their last nine, moved to 27-50 with the win. They hadn't won a road game since Feb. 11 at Detroit.

The Suns (23-54) lost their ninth straight and a franchise-record seventh in a row at home.

The game figured to be perhaps the Suns' last, best chance to win a game this season. They face a tough final five games (four on the road), meaning they could well end the season on a 14-game losing streak.

If they lose out, they would have the third-worst record in the NBA and the third-most ping-pong balls in the Draft lottery

They haven't beaten a losing team since an overtime win over Minnesota on Feb. 26.

They were led by Markieff Morris with 18 points. Luis Scola had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Goran Dragic, who has been outstanding lately, didn't have it in this one. He shot 4-for-13 for 11 points with four turnovers.

The Suns hit a pair of 3-pointers in the closing seconds to make the score close.

QUOTABLE: "He's a young 20. He's going to have his moments. He''s going to face all-world bigs the next few games."

-- Williams, saying his young big man is still learning and hasn't necessarily turned a corner.

THE STAT: The Hornets' eight-game road losing streak is over.

TURNING POINT: The Hornets, down 34-23 with 8:00 left in the first half, outscored the Suns 16-9 until the break to cut the deficit to 43-39. Eric Gordon scored eight points during this stretch. They then outscored the Suns 22-10 to start the second half to take a 61-53 lead and never looked back. Davis hit four straight free throws off two steals (by Greivis Vasquez and Davis, the turnovers were by Dragic and Wes Johnson), to start the run.

QUOTABLE II: "I just consider the source ... Mike."

-- Suns coach Lindsey Hunter on Michael Beasley who had made curious comments after a loss to Golden State on Friday. Beasley suggested he had tuned out criticism in saying, "I stopped listening to people ... everybody. My friends, my family, my teammates, my coaches." Hunter, asked about this, said, "He'd better be listening to what we're doing defensively, or he won't play."

HOT: The Hornets shot 27-for-29 from the line, with Davis going 8-for-8.

NOT: Beasley, who had averaged 15.5 points on 58 percent shooting the previous four games, shot just 1-for-11 in this one.

IN THE ARENA: The Suns gave their annual Dan Majerle Hustle Award to P.J. Tucker. Suns management passed up a chance to make the Ring of Honor member their head coach when Alvin Gentry was replaced in mid-season. Majerle, who was an assistant to Gentry, ended up leaving the organization and recently signed on as the head coach at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Grand Canyon is making the transition to NCAA Division I. The Suns hired Hunter even though he had no coaching experience.

NOTABLE: The Suns are now virtually certain to end up with the second-worst record of their 45-season history. They went 16-66 in their expansion season of 1968-69. They would have to win their final five games to equal what now stands as their second-worst year: 28-54 in 1987-88.
