While trying to maintain their slight edge for sixth place in the Western Conference, the Golden State Warriors look to accomplish something they haven't in 36 years.

The Warriors will try to continue building momentum heading into the postseason and sweep the season series from the reeling Phoenix Suns on Friday night for the first time since the 1976-77 season.

Golden State (43-32) heads into Phoenix four games in front of the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers and 4 1/2 games ahead of Utah in the West. Any combination of three Warriors wins or losses by the Jazz would clinch the franchise's first playoff berth since 2007.

The Warriors wrapped up a five-game homestand with their eighth win in 11 games, beating New Orleans 98-88 on Wednesday.

Golden State owns a one-game advantage over Houston for the sixth spot in the West, but the Rockets own the tiebreaker after going 3-1 against the Warriors. A seventh-place finish would likely mean a first-round date with defending conference champion Oklahoma City.

"The big thing for us," said forward David Lee, who had 23 points and 16 rebounds on Wednesday, "is continuing to compete."

Golden State shouldn't have much trouble doing that against a Phoenix team that dropped its seventh straight on Wednesday, 126-101 to the Los Angeles Clippers.

A win would give the Warriors just their second season sweep of the Suns (23-52) in their 44-year history.

Golden State won the two meetings in Oakland by a combined 30 points, but needed Carl Landry's 12 fourth-quarter points to sneak past the Suns, 87-85, in the season opener in Phoenix.

Stephen Curry, the Warriors' leading scorer at 22.6 points per game, finished with five on 2-of-14 shooting in the opener and has averaged just 8.0 points while missing 20 of 29 shots in his last three games in Phoenix.

Curry, though, is playing well heading into this contest, scoring 27.4 per game and making 37 of 78 (47.4 percent) from 3-point range over his last eight overall.

Klay Thompson has averaged a team-best 20.3 points against the Suns this season, but hopes to break out of a 6 for 30 shooting slump over his last three games.

The Warriors scored 110.5 per game and hit 19 of 39 (48.7 percent) from beyond the arc in the last two meetings.

They should be able to maintain that efficiency against Phoenix, which has given up an average of 112.8 points over its last six games and allows the highest 3-point shooting percentage in the NBA at 39.4.

The Pacific Division-worst Suns, who have lost 13 of 15 overall, have also dropped five straight at home.

"We're not going to make the playoffs, so (we'll) just try to compete until the end of the season," said point guard Goran Dragic, who has averaged 17.0 points and 8.2 assists in his last five games versus Golden State.

Guard Wes Johnson appears to be making the most of his opportunity, scoring 17.6 points per game while sinking 17 of 34 from 3-point range in his last five starts.

While the Suns have averaged 102.7 points - 8.1 above their season average - over their last three games, they've put up just 92.0 per game in this season series.

The Warriors have won five straight over the Suns, including the last two in Phoenix.

Curry's 18 points, 15 assists lead Warriors to win

PHOENIX (AP) Golden State's biggest comeback of the season has the Warriors on the brink of their first playoff berth in six years.

Stephen Curry scored 18 points and matched his career high with 15 assists, sinking two late free throws to seal Golden State's 111-107 victory over Phoenix on Friday, extending the Suns' losing streak to a season-worst eight games.

Jarrett Jack's 3-pointer with 31.6 seconds to play pulled the Warriors out of serious trouble.

Klay Thompson scored 15 of his 25 points in the third quarter, when the Warriors stormed back from an 18-point first-half deficit. David Lee added 22 points and 14 rebounds for Golden State.

The Warriors can clinch a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2006-07 with a victory over Utah on Sunday at home.

"There are a lot of people in the locker room that haven't tasted it before," Curry said. "For us to be right there and have a home game to clinch it, we understand we have a bigger goal than that, but it will nice to get the `X' by your name."

Goran Dragic tied his career high with 32 points and Michael Beasley added 25 for the Suns, who shot a season-best 61 percent from the field yet still managed to lose.

"For us to shoot 61 percent and still lose is mindboggling," Phoenix interim coach Lindsey Hunter said, "but we had 22 turnovers in some crucial situations during the game. We got to keep working to clean those things up and try to take the little victories out of this and keep building."

The Warriors have won three straight and five of six.

"Tonight showed the resiliency that we have built over the course of the season," Curry said. "We are a lot more mature team and are playing a lot better basketball, obviously, going into the last six games of the year."

Golden State swept the season series with Phoenix for the first time since 1976-77.

"We were not prepared in the first quarter. Our defense wasn't sharp. We were scoring but we were a step slow defensively," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "Unacceptable, at the same time I am awfully proud of my guys. We responded. There was a time we would have to talk about it tomorrow and make the adjustment, but we talked about it at halftime. They came out and out together a picture perfect third quarter."

Beasley, inconsistent all season, credited his better recent play by the fact that he no longer listens to anybody, his coaches included.

"I'm doing what I know how to do," he said. "That's really it. The more I listen to people the more I got to think about. So at times it messes me up when I'm trying to think about a thousand things at once. Just stopped listening to people and just start trusting my instincts again."

Consecutive baskets by Beasley cut the lead to 104-102 with 1:29 to play and Phoenix got the ball back, but Beasley's pass was intercepted by Carl Landry and Jack's 3 made it 107-102.

Dragic's two free throws with 22 seconds to go cut it to 107-104, then Curry threw the ball away for an over-and-back violation, giving the Suns the ball with 18 seconds left.

Jermaine O'Neal was fouled but made just the first of two free throws, keeping Golden State ahead 107-105 with 17.2 seconds to play. Curry's two free throws with 14.8 seconds left put the Warriors ahead 109-105.

O'Neal scored on a rebound with just 0.5 seconds to play, then Jack added two from the line to make the final 111-107.

Down 64-55 at the half, the Warriors mounted a 25-4 run to take an 87-76 lead on consecutive 3s by Thompson, the second with 54 seconds left in the period. Golden State outscored Phoenix 32-14 in the third quarter to lead 87-78 entering the fourth.

The Suns dominated most of the first half.

Beasley banked it in from just inside midcourt to give Phoenix a 37-23 lead after one quarter. Dragic scored 15 in the team's highest-scoring quarter of the season.

Beasley started the second quarter with a pair of jumpers to give Phoenix its biggest lead at 41-23 with 11:08 left in the half.

The Warriors rallied, and when Curry stole the ball from Dragic, scrambled to his feet, and sank a 3-pointer, Golden State cut the lead to 46-41 with 6:10 left in the half.

But the Suns stretched it back to 58-47 on Beasley's driving layup. His 11-footer in the lane with 1.5 seconds to go put Phoenix up 64-55 at the break.

Dragic was 7 for 7 from the field, two of them 3-pointers, for 21 first-half points. Beasley was 9 for 12 for 19.

Notes: Phoenix has lost a season-worst six in a row at home. ... Golden State has won six in a row over Phoenix dating to last season. ... Phoenix is 2-15 since winning three in a row Feb. 26-March 1. ... Curry's previous 15-assist game came against Sacramento on Feb. 17, 2010. ... THE FACTS: The Golden State Warriors are on the verge of making the playoffs for the first time since 2007, just the second time in 20 seasons.

The Warriors, who struggled to a 23-43 record last season, can clinch on Sunday after they stumbled badly at the start and the finish Friday night but somehow edged the lowly Suns in Phoenix 111-107.

"This is not a surprise," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. Maybe not to the Warriors, but surely to the rest of the NBA. The Warriors' magic number is two, but they can clinch the No. 8 spot with a win over No. 9 Utah at home Sunday night.

"They worked their tails off," Jackson said of his players. "They deserve all the credit."

Warriors guard Stephen Curry said, "We understand we have a bigger goal...But it would be nice to have that X by your name."

Jackson had said, confidently before tipoff, that, "We're not good enough to look ahead." His words didn't appear to get through though when the Suns rolled to an early 18-point lead (41-23 early in the second quarter).

"I'm disappointed by the start," Jackson said. "We were not prepared in the first quarter. We were a step slow....unacceptable."

In the end, though, the Warriors had too much firepower. They pulled ahead late in the third quarter, then struggled to put the Suns away but appeared safe when Jarrett Jack hit a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left for a 107-102 lead. Then the Warriors made a series of inexplicable mistakes in the final 20 seconds, They had a 107-104 lead when Curry threw the ball from the frontcourt into the backcourt instead of waiting to be fouled.

"Bad play by Steph," Jackson said. "He thought he had someone open. A careless mistake. That can't happen." The Warriors then intentionally fouled the Suns with a full 17 seconds left.

"We were trying to foul, but not that quickly," Jackson said. But Jermaine O'Neal, despite a lane violation by the Warriors' David Lee, converted only one free throw.

The end result was that they didn't wrap it up until Curry hit two free throws with 14.8 seconds left. Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 25 points, while Lee had 22 points and 14 boards.

The Suns (23-53 ) lost their eighth in a row and 12th in 13 games. They now have the NBA's third-worst record, just below Cleveland (23-52).

For the Suns, Goran Dragic scored 32. "There are still six games left," Dragic said. "You have to play for your own pride and everything else....most importantly for your team." Michael Beasley had 25 points but also six turnovers.

Beasley, who has has a disappointing season but has played better under new coach Lindsey Hunter, said he has stopped listening to criticism.

"I stopped listening to people....everybody. My friends, my family, my teammates, my coaches," Beasley said.

After a fine all-round game Wednesday at Utah, Hunter said he told Beasley, "'I'm proud of you, but I'm mad at you. You could have been doing this all along.'"

THE STAT: The Suns shot 61.1 percent yet lost. The NBA record in this situation was set on April 11, 2001 at Washington, when the Wizards shot 63.4 percent in a 113-109 loss to the Bulls.

TURNING POINT: When Dragic turned mortal in the third quarter. Dragic hit every shot in the first half, 7-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-2 from long range, and 5-for-5 from the line as he piled up 21 points and the Suns took a 64-55 lead at the break. But he couldn't carry the Suns by himself. He scored only two in the Suns' 14-point third quarter, while the Warriors piled up 32 and took an 87-78 lead into the final quarter.

"I don't think he took a shot in the paint," Curry pointed out. "You can say you can live with it. But you have to do something different."
