Jeff Green has made quite a name for himself while helping fill in for the injured Kevin Garnett.

He may need to step up even more with Paul Pierce banged up, too.

Green looks to build on another terrific effort as the playoff-bound Boston Celtics host the Cleveland Cavaliers, who try to avoid an 11th consecutive loss Friday night.

Green, who burst onto the scene with a career-high 43 points against Miami on March 18, came up huge again Wednesday in a 98-93 win over Detroit. The former Georgetown standout posted 34 points, six rebounds and four blocks as Boston (39-36) clinched its sixth consecutive postseason berth.

"I don't try to take over games. We have 'the Truth,'" said Green, calling Pierce by his nickname. "We feed off each other. If it's in my hands, I try to make a play. If it's in his hands, he'll try to make a play. We're playing off each other."

Averaging 23.8 points on 56.8 percent shooting over the last five games, Green has started seven straight contests and nine of 11 with Garnett sidelined by an ankle problem, and he may stay in the starting lineup even when Garnett returns.

Green could be asked to take on an even bigger load Friday with Pierce uncertain to play due to a sore right ankle.

"You have seen a lot of flashes of that this year," Pierce said of Green becoming a go-to option. "You've got a guy like Jeff who can put up big numbers like that, who can take over like that. It's fun, it's fun to watch and to be a part of."

The Celtics sit in seventh place in the Eastern Conference and, though unlikely, have a chance to finish as high as fourth.

"We knew we were a playoff team before the season started, despite the injuries and everything," Pierce said.

"The playoffs is a totally different game; it's nothing like the regular season. At least these guys will go out there and get their feet wet, see some shots go in, rebound the ball and get some experience."

The Celtics now turn their attention to the Cavaliers (22-52), who have been outscored by an average of 13.5 points during a 10-game skid - their longest since dropping an NBA-worst 26 straight in 2010-11.

Cleveland's woes continued Wednesday with a 113-95 loss to Brooklyn. The Cavaliers trailed by as many as 34 points and allowed the Nets to shoot a season-high 56.6 percent.

"We just didn't show any life," coach Byron Scott said. "The energy, the effort wasn't there - for whatever reason."

Playing for the second time in three games after missing eight with a shoulder injury, Kyrie Irving was held to 16 points on 5-of-16 shooting.

"Have I checked out? No," said Irving, averaging a team-high 23.0 points. "I'm out here playing with basically still a sprained AC joint and with not a care in the world because I just want to play. I haven't checked out. That thought has never crossed my mind."

Irving is averaging 26.0 points in five career meetings against the Celtics, tied for his second-highest mark against any opponent. He scored 40 in a 95-90 win Jan. 22, but he missed a 93-92 loss March 27. Green scored 21 points that night, including the game-winning layup as time expired.

Cleveland has lost eight of 10 in Boston, where the Celtics have won 13 of 15 overall.

Cavs end 10-game skid with 97-91 win at Boston

BOSTON (AP) Tristan Thompson's new career highs of 29 points and 17 rebounds weren't nearly as important to him as the number he helped the Cleveland Cavaliers avoid.

There will be no 11th straight loss for Cleveland.

Thompson and the Cavaliers dominated Boston inside as Cleveland ended its 10-game losing streak by beating the Celtics 97-91 on Friday night.

"During this losing streak, we had a lot of games we should have won but at the end of the day we ended up taking the L," Thompson said. "Tonight was our game to win. We knew we had to take it and bring it back to Cleveland."

It was the second time in two days Thompson took on a leadership role for the Cavaliers. After practice Thursday, he lashed out at critics who blame the Cavaliers' woes on coach Byron Scott and rumors that he won't be back for a fourth season. Thompson called the speculation "bogus," saying it was the players' responsibility to work their way out of the slide.

On Friday, he backed up his comments by grabbing every loose ball within reach and leading the Cavaliers to a 58-42 rebounding edge in their first win since March 12. His seven offensive rebounds were just three short of Boston's team total.

"I just know he was really geared up to play," Scott said. "Maybe it was some of the things he said. `We have to come out and play like men' - and I thought our guys did that."

Alonzo Gee also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who avenged their most painful loss of the skid.

Cleveland's largest lead was 14, the same margin the Cavaliers led the Celtics by in the fourth quarter of a game last week before Boston rallied and won 92-91 on Jeff Green's layup at the buzzer.

The Cavaliers held on to this lead - firmly - two days after getting routed by Brooklyn 113-95 in Cleveland.

"I thought they responded perfect," Scott said. "I thought they were into the game from start to finish. Came out with some aggressiveness, focused and we played hard."

The Cavaliers avoided their 11th straight loss, which would have been the second-longest streak under Scott.

Wayne Ellington scored 12 points and Kyrie Irving added 11 points for Cleveland in his third game back since missing eight with a sprained shoulder.

The Celtics played without team captain Paul Pierce, who was out with a sore ankle.

The move may have cost the slumping Celtics. Boston has dropped eight of 11 and is clinging to the seventh playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We missed a lot of open shots, but I also thought we settled," coach Doc Rivers said.

The Celtics shot well early, but went 6 for 22 in a woeful third quarter and never recovered after the outside shots stopped falling. The Cavaliers were already controlling inside and outscored Boston 52-38 in the paint.

The Celtics also hurt themselves at the foul line, making 13 of 22 free throws.

"We definitely thought we had an opportunity to win the game there, but we let it slip," Jason Terry said. "In the second quarter, we built up momentum and for whatever reason we let them back in the game, sent them to the free throw line and gave them some easy baskets in transitions."

Green scored 23 points for Boston and Shavlik Randolph had 16 points before fouling out with 6:57 left in the fourth. Brandon Bass scored 12 and Avery Bradley had 10 points for Boston.

The Cavaliers hadn't won since beating Washington 95-90.

The Celtics started the third quarter well with a 10-3 run for a 62-55 lead, then went without a field goal for the next 5:18. Cleveland outscored Boston 13-1 during the span with the Celtics' only point coming on a free throw made by Randolph with 4:45 left in the third.

It was Randolph's 14th point of the game, but he missed on his second free throw attempt then had to go to the bench barely a minute later when he was called for his fifth foul. Thompson made both foul shots to put the Cavaliers up 68-63 with 3:19 left in the period.

Jordan Crawford's 3-pointer with 32 seconds left somewhat salvaged a dismal period for the Celtics, who trailed 74-68 entering the fourth.

The Cavaliers scored the first eight points of the fourth, including a pair of free throws by C.J. Miles after taking a flagrant foul from Terry at midcourt. Boston never got closer than four points the of the way.

Notes: Thompson's career high in points is 27 against the Nets in March 2012. His rebounding high was 16 against Houston in January. ... The Celtics were without Kevin Garnett, who missed his eighth straight game because of inflammation in his left ankle. ... The Cavaliers outrebounded the Celtics 28-21 in the first half, playing to a 52-all tie after two periods. ... Boston made just eight of 15 foul shots in the first half.

THE FACTS: Tristan Thompson had a career night, helping the Cleveland Cavaliers hold off a late charge from the shorthanded Boston Celtics and finish off a 97-91 win at the TD Garden. Thompson took advantage of a Celtics front line missing Paul Pierce (ankle) and Kevin Garnett (ankle), to post career highs in both points (29) and rebounds (17). The outburst allowed the Cavaliers to snap a season-high 10-game losing streak. Jeff Green had a team-high 23 points for the hosts in the setback.

QUOTABLE: "He had these green shoes on today, maybe that was it. I don't know. Again, he was really focused this morning and he came with an aggressive mindset from the start and he held it for 41 minutes."

THE STAT: The Celtics failed to find any rhythm in the second half without their two star forwards, as they shot just 32.6 percent from the field over the final 24 minutes.

TURNING POINT: With Green saddled with foul trouble, Cleveland took control of the game midway through the second half with a 14-3 run to build a double-digit lead. Despite a rally in the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough for Boston to overcome the 14-point deficit the Cavs had built.

QUOTABLE II: "Whenever you can get a win, especially during this losing streak we had a lot of games where we should have won, and at the end of the day, took the L. Tonight was our game to win, so we knew we needed to take it and bring it back to Cleveland."

HOT: Shavlik Randolph -- Despite fouling out in just 13 minutes of action, Randolph scored a career-high 16 points, providing crucial energy and rebounding off the bench for Boston in his time on the floor.

NOT: Kyrie Irving -- The All-Star point guard appeared rusty in just his third game back from injury, missing 16 of his 20 shot attempts on the night, in one of his toughest offensive games of the season.

ROOKIE WATCH: Tyler Zeller -- The rookie power forward battled foul trouble for the majority of the night, but still managed to post nine points and six rebounds over 25 minutes.

NOTABLE: Avery Bradley left the game in the fourth quarter with a bruised collarbone, but told reporters after the game he expects "to be fine." With the victory, Cleveland splits the season series with Boston. Doc Rivers said before the game he expects both Pierce and Garnett to return to the lineup Sunday vs. Washington. Boston maintained their 2.5 game lead for the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference with Milwaukee's loss to New York. Daniel Gibson did not play for Cleveland due to a elbow injury. Alonzo Gee had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
