Suns-Clippers Preview

On the verge of matching their longest losing streak of the season and following two particularly bad defeats, the Los Angeles Clippers may be getting a break with the Western Conference's worst team coming to town.

Chris Paul expects them to treat it like a playoff game.

The Clippers get their fourth crack at a franchise-record 50th victory and have a shot to wrap up the Pacific Division on Wednesday night as they meet the Phoenix Suns.

"We've had three chances to get to 50 wins, and we still haven't been able to do it. So Wednesday's a big game for us," Paul said. "We've got to approach it like a playoff game. Most teams are approaching us like that."

Los Angeles (49-26) has been outscored by double digits with its All-Star point guard on the floor in each of the last three games. The first one was a solid performance by the Clippers, losing 104-102 at West-leading San Antonio on Friday, but the last two were poor efforts that left many players frustrated.

Paul was the only starter not benched for the entire fourth quarter of Saturday's 98-81 loss to a Houston team missing James Harden. Los Angeles returned from a 1-3 road trip only to lose 109-106 to Indiana on Monday, when the starters again sat out the fourth except for Paul and Blake Griffin entering late after the reserves nearly made up a 24-point deficit.

"You'd love to sit here and say, 'Yeah, it's a wakeup call and we're going to be completely different,'" Griffin said. "And that's the idea and that's what we've talked about and that's what we want to do moving forward.

"We have to prove that."

Griffin averages a team-leading 8.4 rebounds but has grabbed 5.0 per game over the last four. His averages of 14.0 points and 40.9 percent shooting over the last seven games are well below his season marks (18.3, 54.0).

Paul is shooting 35.2 percent in the last four, including 2 for 12 from 3-point range.

Their struggles could be why the Clippers remain stuck on 49 wins, tied with the 1974-75 Boston Braves for the franchise record, and looking to avoid losing a season-high four straight for the third time.

They will clinch their first division title with a win Wednesday and a loss by second-place Golden State to New Orleans.

"You can only talk so much, eventually, answers speak louder than words," said reserve Jamal Crawford, who had 25 points Monday.

Phoenix (23-51) also is one loss shy of matching its worst slide of the season, having dropped six in a row and 10 of 11.

Like the Clippers, the Suns hosted the Central Division-leading Pacers in their last game but were more competitive, trailing by single digits for most of the contest before losing 112-104 on Saturday.

"I can definitely see that trend where guys get up a little bit more for the high quality teams," forward Jared Dudley said.

That may have been the case when the Suns last saw the Clippers, winning 93-88 in Phoenix on Jan. 24. However, an injured Paul missed that game after averaging 16.5 points and 12.0 assists in two December matchups as Los Angeles won both.

Griffin averaged 23.5 points in those victories before getting held to 12 in January.

Phoenix's Goran Dragic had 24 points in that meeting after totaling 15 in the first two. He's coming off a 21-point, nine-assist performance Saturday after being rested for the previous two games.

Clippers beat Suns 126-101 for record 50th win

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Clippers got their franchise-record 50th victory in their fourth try. It didn't come without some fireworks that had nothing to do with celebrating.

DeAndre Jordan had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Chris Paul added 14 points and 12 assists, and Los Angeles led all the way in beating the last-place Phoenix Suns 126-101 on Wednesday night as tempers flared in the fourth quarter.

"It's big," Jordan said about the landmark win, "but we're looking at the bigger picture. This is one thing we can check off."

Willie Green and Caron Butler scored 15 points each, and Blake Griffin had nine points, seven assists and five rebounds to help the Clippers end a three-game skid with their second-highest scoring total of the season. They improved to 50-26 overall, bettering the single-season record for wins set in 1974-75 when the team was in Buffalo. They're 29-9 at home.

"Whenever you do something first it's significant, but we expect more and we should," coach Vinny Del Negro said.

Griffin added, "We feel like we could have been a 60-win team."

The Clippers needed to win and have Golden State lose to New Orleans to clinch the franchise's first division title. But the Warriors won 98-88, postponing another first by this Clippers team.

"Ever since I got here we talked about setting a precedent," Paul said.

Wesley Johnson scored 20 points and Jermaine O'Neal added 18 for the last-place Suns, who have lost seven straight overall, 13 of their last 15, and six in a row on the road. Goran Dragic, who didn't score his first basket until the start of the third quarter, finished with 12.

"We didn't contend while they were penetrating and scoring some easy baskets," Dragic said. "We're not going to make the playoffs, so just try to compete until the end of the season."

The Clippers pulled away in the third, outscoring the Suns 38-20 to lead 95-70 going into the fourth. Jordan's teammates set him up for three high-flying dunks - he had eight total in the game - while Griffin and Paul got ones of their own in, too.

"It's all energy and effort," Del Negro said about Jordan. "He was active and running the court. When he moves like that it makes the game easier for him and the team."

Griffin and Phoenix teammates P.J. Tucker and O'Neal had to be separated at one point after they tangled with Griffin while double-teaming him.

The bad blood didn't stop there.

With 8:57 left in the game and the Clippers starters on the bench, Jamal Crawford hit a 3-pointer and Ryan Hollins put his left arm around Dragic's neck as they scrambled for position under the basket. Their momentum carried them over to the Suns' bench, with Hollins keeping Dragic in a headlock before shoving him and Michael Beasley shouting at Hollins in the tangle of players.

Lamar Odom pulled on Hollins' jersey to get him away. After the referees reviewed the play, Hollins was called for a flagrant-2 foul and ejected, while Beasley received a technical.

"It was just a quick play in the heat of the moment," Hollins said. "I definitely didn't have intent to hurt and I don't think he did, either."

In the first quarter, Griffin and Tucker received double technicals.

"Ryan had a nice 45 seconds there when he and Goran Dragic almost had a WWE battle," Jordan joked.

The Clippers dominated the paint with a season-high 72 points to Phoenix's 32, and had a 25-11 edge in fast break points.

"We played fast, we got tempo up and got some stops," Paul said. "We forced 19 turnovers and only had six ourselves."

Los Angeles opened the game on a 15-0 run for its largest lead of the half. The Suns twice got within two points on baskets by Beasley, but the Clippers used a 10-5 spurt, including six free throws by Paul, to lead 57-50 at the break.

"To come out and give up 15 points without them executing one single play is embarrassing," Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter said.

NOTES: The Clippers, Memphis and Charlotte are the only teams in NBA history that have yet to win a division crown. ... Clippers G Chauncey Billups missed his fourth straight game with a strained right groin. ... The Suns play four of their final seven games on the road, where they are 7-30. .. The Clippers won the season series, 3-1. ... Crawford has made 33 straight free throws since Feb. 23. He set the franchise record of 58 in a row earlier this season.

THE FACTS: If the Clippers are hoping to do any damage in the playoffs this season, they'll need more games like Wednesday's from center DeAndre Jordan. He put the Clippers on his broad shoulders against the visiting Suns, producing a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds in the 126-101 victory. The win ended a three-game losing streak and gave the Clippers a franchise-record 50 wins on the season.

THE STAT: The victory also dropped L.A.'s magic number to 1 in their pursuit of their first division championship in franchise history. They can clinch the Pacific with a win Sunday afternoon against the visiting Lakers, or a loss by the Warriors on Friday night against the visiting Suns.

QUOTABLE: "To get to No. 50 in front of our fans, the first time it has been done, is a great feeling for the organization and the team, but we've got much bigger things [to do] than win 50."

TURNING POINT: The Clippers scored the game's first 15 points, only to give up the next 10. Phoenix hung around until the Clippers strung together a 15-2 run to go up 77-60 with 5:54 left in the third quarter and the Suns were finally toasted.

HOT: The Clippers had six players score in double figures while shooting 55.9 percent from the floor, and that didn't include the team's leading scorer, forward Blake Griffin, who finished with nine points. Eric Bledsoe scored 17 points off the bench, starters bCaron Butler, Chris Paul and Willie Green scored 15 points apiece and Jamal Crawford added 13 points. Wesley Johnson scored 20 for the Suns, the third time in the last five games he has surpassed the 20-point plateau. Jermaine O'Neal added 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench, shooting 7-for-10 along the way.

QUOTABLE II: "We had some good performances from a lot of guys. ... Just a solid, good effort, a good team win for us."

NOT: Phoenix point guard Goran Dragic is one of four NBA players averaging better than 14 points, seven assists and 1.5 steals this season, but he didn't reach any of those numbers against the Clippers. He scored three points on 3-for-11 shooting, distributed four assists and had no steals. He did turn the ball over five times for the second consecutive game.

GOOD MOVE: In the four games leading up to the meeting with Phoenix, the Clippers had been outscored 113-75 in the third quarter. They made sure they didn't have a repeat of that lapse, winning the third frame by a 38-20 margin and shooting 70.8 percent in the process. It also helped their psyche to get off to a good start in the first quarter. Jumping out to a 15-0 lead certainly provided some early comfort.

QUOTABLE III: "The third quarter we kind of jumped on them, took control of the game."

BAD MOVE: The Clippers were leading 104-79 with just under nine minutes left in the game and the only thing to settle was the final score. But that's when Clippers back-up center Ryan Hollins got tangled up with Dragic under the L.A. basket and neither displayed any effort to separate. They spilled over to the Phoenix bench, where Michael Beasley got into the act, shoving Hollins aside to start an even bigger scrum. Both Hollins and Beasley received flagrant 2 fouls and were ejected. Griffin also received his 14th technical foul of the season after getting involved with Dragic in the first quarter. Two more during the regular season and he'll be suspended for a game.

NOTABLE: Clippers starting shooting guard Chauncey Billups missed his third straight game with a groin injury. He has played in just 20 games this season because of injuries and rehabilitation from surgery on a torn Achilles' in February 2011.
