Magic-Spurs Preview

Even a veteran team like the San Antonio Spurs can be mentally affected by a string of close games featuring several narrow losses. A visit from the Orlando Magic ought to ease the Spurs' minds.

After another late setback, the Spurs look to avoid their first three-game losing streak in two years and strengthen their tenuous hold on first place in the Western Conference as they host the struggling Magic on Wednesday night.

Five straight Spurs games have been decided by two points or fewer, with San Antonio (55-19) losing three of them. Prior to that stretch, the Spurs had gone 4-0 in games decided by two points or fewer this season.

After giving up a layup with 0.6 seconds left in a 92-90 loss at Memphis on Monday, the Spurs weren't sure what to make of their recent penchant for the dramatic.

"It's good if we're learning from it, and we're going to use it to be smarter come playoff time," forward Stephen Jackson said. "But, if we're not learning from it, no. Hopefully, we'll take all these experiences as we get ready to play postseason."

Game-winners against the Spurs by Houston and Miami over the last 11 days came with 4.5 seconds and 1.9 seconds left, respectively.

The close defeats have had consequences, as Oklahoma City has won four of five to cut San Antonio's lead for the best record in the West to one game. Each team has eight games remaining.

Getting healthy might help San Antonio get back on track. The Spurs played without three of their top four scorers Monday. Manu Ginobili is out for weeks with a strained hamstring, and Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard skipped the trip to Memphis to rest sore knees. Duncan and Leonard could be available Wednesday.

The Spurs, who haven't lost three in a row since a six-game skid March 23-April 1, 2011, have to like their chances of bouncing back against the Magic. They have won five of six in the series with those wins coming by an average of 11.0 points. San Antonio cruised to a 110-89 victory in Orlando on Nov. 28 as seven Spurs scored at least nine points.

San Antonio is 32-5 at home and 23-5 against the East.

Orlando (19-56) has dropped 10 of 11, falling 111-103 at Houston on Monday. The Magic rallied from 25 down to pull within five late in the fourth quarter before losing their eighth straight on the road.

"These guys don't quit," said rookie forward Maurice Harkless, who scored a season-high 28 points. "No one on this team quits."

Magic point guard Jameer Nelson has missed consecutive games with a sprained right ankle, and it is unclear if he will return Wednesday. In two starts in Nelson's place, former Spurs first-round draft pick Beno Udrih has averaged 18.5 points and 9.0 assists.

San Antonio guard Tony Parker has averaged 23.5 points and 8.0 assists while shooting 56.2 percent from the field in his last six games against Orlando.

Green helps depleted Spurs pull away from Magic

SAN ANTONIO (AP) No Tony Parker, no Kawhi Leonard and no Manu Ginobili proved to be no problem for the Spurs in the end.

Relying heavily on its bench, San Antonio took control of a see-saw battle in the fourth quarter and walked away with a 98-84 victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night.

Danny Green led all scorers with 20 points, Gary Neal had 16 and Tiago Splitter add 10 points and nine rebounds as San Antonio avoided its first three-game losing streak since 2011, getting a much-needed victory following back-to-back defeats in the closing seconds to Miami and Memphis earlier in the week.

Coach Gregg Popovich gave many of his regulars some welcomed rest. The Spurs travel to Oklahoma City for a Western Conference showdown Thursday after extending their lead to 1 1/2 games over the idle Thunder.

"That group that was out there did a pretty good job of attacking," Popovich said. "They didn't hold the ball. They kept good pace on the court and they played pretty good defense."

Popovich was particularly pleased with the three-man rotation of Nando DeColo, Patty Mills and Cory Joseph, which filled in for Parker. The trio combined for 23 points and 12 assists.

"I though Cory did a great job of catching and penetrating and creating problems in that regard," Popovich said. "Nando kept us together pretty well. Patty had a tough night shooting, but his hustle is infectious."

Parker was resting the left ankle that he sprained on Feb. 27 against Sacramento. The injury kept him out for eight games before returning to lineup for the last five games before Wednesday.

Leonard sat out for a second straight game with a sore knee and Ginobili is nursing a strained hamstring that is expected to keep him out for four weeks.

A 15-2 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by Green midway through the fourth finally allowed the Spurs to take control of the game.

"We wanted to jump on them and give some of our guys a rest," Green said. "It's always good to get the win first. The rest will hopefully help the team come tomorrow. Guys are sore and banged up a little bit. So hopefully they come out fresh tomorrow."

Before the run, San Antonio appeared sluggish and unable to pull away from the Magic, which was within four points at 74-70 with 10:37 remaining.

"They're just a team that's been there, done that over and over again," Orlando coach Jacque Vaughn said. "They were able to capitalize on our lack of small details."

Maurice Harkless scored 18 points for Orlando. The Magic kept it close by taking advantage of nine first-half turnovers by the Spurs and 16 overall. Nikola Vucevic added 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Beno Udrih scored 14.

Tim Duncan played just 14 minutes and Tiago Splitter saw 17 minutes of action. Popovich had to go deep into his bench and called on little-used big man Aaron Baynes, who help spark a late third-quarter charge with back-to-back buckets.

"I didn't want to play Tiago any more than I wanted to play Timmy," Popovich said. "(Orlando) hung in there; finally we found a group that made some shots and got it going. So Baynes was really important in being out there."

Notes: Vaughn is another off the Popovich lineage of NBA coaches, having spent one season on the Spurs bench as an assistant, after playing three seasons with the Spurs . The Spurs' magic number is two to clinch the Southwest Division title . DeJuan Blair joined the other ailing Spurs, missing the game with a stomach virus . Orlando was without three players, including starting point guard Jameer Nelson, out with a sprained right ankle . The Magic have lost 10 of the last 12 meetings in San Antonio . Stephen Jackson, who tweaked his right ankle three minutes into the contest, will not travel to Oklahoma City and is expected to have an MRI on Thursday.

THE FACTS: Danny Green shot 7-for-10 from the floor and scored 20 points, and the San Antonio Spurs managed not to look past the Orlando Magic with a 98-84 victory over Orlando on Wednesday night.

It was hardly about tonight for the Spurs (56-19). Tim Duncan played only 13 ½ minutes, Tony Parker rested a sore ankle and Kawhi Leonard took the night off as San Antonio heads to Oklahoma City for a key Western Conference game with the Thunder on Thursday night. San Antonio is 1 ½ games ahead of OKC for the top seed in the West and has a 2-1 advantage in the season series.

The Magic (19-57), losers in 11 of their last 12 games, got 18 points from Maurice Harkless, but it took him 21 shots to do it as Orlando shot less than 39 percent from the floor. Jameer Nelson missed his third-straight game for Orlando with an ankle sprain. He's possible for Friday's game at Chicago.

QUOTABLE: "It's always good to get the win first. Second of all, the rest [for most of the Spurs notables] will help the team come tomorrow [in Oklahoma City]. Guys are sore and banged up a little bit. So, hopefully they'll come out fresh tomorrow."

THE STAT: Even though the Spurs rested most of their key players, the Magic were clearly outmanned. Their bench shot 2-for-10 in the second half as Orlando was held to less than 20 points in both the third and the fourth quarters.

TURNING POINT: Orlando never led, but the Magic cut the Spurs lead to 74-70 with 10 ½ minutes left in the game and forced Nando De Colo (starting for Parker) into a turnover off a halfcourt trap. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich called timeout and San Antonio outscored Orlando 15-2 during the next 5 ½ minutes. Green hit a pair of 3-pointers and had two assists.

HOT: Green was 4-for-7 from the 3-point line, 3-for-4 in the second half. It's his best showing from that distance since going 6-for-8 on March 27 at home against the Nuggets.

NOT: It looked like Stephen Jackson was breaking out of a 9-for-30 shooting slump over a seven-game stretch. He went 9-for-18 in his past two games against Miami and Memphis, but tonight he shot 1-for-9 (missing all four of his 3-point shots) until sitting on the bench in the fourth quarter because of what appeared to be an ankle injury. He'll get an MRI tomorrow and likely won't travel to Oklahoma City according to Popovich.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Nikola Vucevic scored 16 points for Orlando, grabbing 14 rebounds with four steals and two blocked shots. The second-year 7-footer out of USC is averaging 15 points and 14 rebounds in three games since returning from a mild concussion. He's also had at least two blocks or steals in each game.

INSIDE THE ARENA: With the Valero Texas Open making its annual stop on the PGA Tour, several golfers were on hand prior to tomorrow's opening round at TPC San Antonio. That included Ian Poulter, ranked 12th in the Official World Golf Rankings and the star of Europe's Ryder Cup team last fall.

ROOKIE WATCH: The Magic have two first-year starters and three other rookies getting plenty of time off the bench. But the Spurs got a boost from Aron Baynes, the former Washington State post player who had a career-high nine points with five rebounds (two of them offensive) and 4-for-6 shooting in almost 18 minutes. A member of the Australian national team at the London Olympics, he's played 12 games for the Spurs since his signing from the European League in late January.

NOTABLE: Tiago Splitter came of the bench tonight, breaking a streak of 50-straight games that he was a starter, dating back to Dec. 15. He joined the Spurs' other starters in getting rest, playing just 16 ½ minutes yet almost recording a double-double (10 points, nine rebounds). ... DeJuan Blair also missed the game for the Spurs because of a stomach virus. ... A loss by the Spurs would have been their first three-game losing streak since March 2011.
