Grizzlies-Trail Blazers Preview

Mike Conley's improvement has helped the Memphis Grizzlies to the brink of franchise history and a top-four seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

Conley and the Grizzlies try to continue their climb in the standings and go for a team-record 51st win in Wednesday night's road game against the struggling Portland Trail Blazers.

After having a strong March, Conley opened this month by hitting a last-second layup in a 92-90 victory over West-leading San Antonio on Monday. He finished with a team-best 23 points as the Grizzlies (50-24) improved to 10-3 this season when he scores 20 or more.

Memphis signaled it was ready to rely more on the sixth-year guard when it traded leading scorer Rudy Gay to Toronto on Jan. 30. Conley has lived up to those expectations by averaging 18.5 points over his last 16 games - 5.3 more than in his first 56 - and 7.0 assists.

"He's constantly getting better on the court and being a leader, putting players in the right position," forward Zach Randolph said. "So I'm happy for the young fellow. Sky's the limit for him."

With Conley's help, the Grizzlies have won three straight and 20 of 26. They now have the same record as third-place Denver in the West, but the Nuggets hold the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the season series. Memphis and Denver are the only non-division leaders that can claim one of the West's top-four seeds.

"We want to keep pushing," Randolph said. "We want to keep getting better ourselves, try to stay in third or the fourth spot and try to get home-court advantage. Try to get to that next level."

The only other time the Grizzlies reached 50 wins in 2003-04, they lost their four subsequent regular-season games and all four playoff contests against San Antonio.

Memphis can break the 50-win mark for the first time by posting a third straight victory over the Blazers (33-41). Conley had a career-high 15 assists and 14 points, including six in the final minute, in the most recent matchup, a 102-97 win March 12 that snapped the Grizzlies' three-game skid in Portland.

Conley had 20 points in a 91-85 home victory over the Blazers on March 6 and is averaging 20.2 over his last nine games. This time, he will face a Portland team that's dropped five in a row and is close to being eliminated from playoff contention.

The Blazers, who begin a five-game homestand Wednesday, are 11th in the West and 5 1/2 games back of eighth with eight contests remaining.

Leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge's three-game absence due to a sprained right ankle has hardly helped, and it's unknown if he'll return against Memphis.

Portland trailed throughout a 112-102 loss in Utah on Monday despite Wesley Mathews' 23 points.

Damian Lillard set an NBA single-season rookie record for 3-pointers with 169.

"It's an honor to be able to (break the record)," said Lillard, 20 of 37 from 3-point range over the last seven games. "But I wish I would have done it in a win. It's bittersweet."

Lillard totaled 47 points in last month's two losses to Memphis.

Grizzles top Blazers for franchise-record 51st win

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) While guard Mike Conley says the Memphis Grizzlies are pushing for home court advantage in the playoffs, coach Lionel Hollins maintains it doesn't really matter.

History tells Hollins so.

"The players may think about it but I just want us to play well," he said. "We had some court last year and we lost the series. We've been in series where we didn't have home court and we won. Wherever you go you've just got to play well."

Conley scored 20 points and the Grizzlies beat the short-handed Trail Blazers 94-76 on Wednesday night to break the franchise record for wins in a season.

"We were all about business tonight," Conley said. "We understood that this is a game we needed to win. Obviously, we are chasing that home court advantage so need we need every one we can get."

The Grizzlies have won four straight to move to 51-24 this season, surpassing its 50-win season in 2003-04.

They have already clinched a spot in the playoffs and are jockeying for home-court advantage in the first round. Memphis sits in fifth place in the Western Conference, a game and a half back of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Zach Randolph, who played his first six seasons with Portland from 2001-07, added 17 points and eight rebounds for Memphis.

The Blazers, who are effectively out of the playoffs with seven games left, were without two starters, LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum. As a result, the team started rookies Victor Claver, Meyers Leonard and Damian Lillard.

Memphis took advantage and led by as many as 18 in the first half. Portland (33-42) got within single digits midway through the third quarter, but could not catch up.

Lillard and J.J. Hickson led the Blazers with 17 points apiece.

"We just have to play for each other," Hickson said. "You sit in the locker room and you look at guys, you look at the guy next to you. That's what it's all about. It's about playing and not giving in."

The Grizzlies were without rookie guard Tony Wroten because of a migraine. But earlier in the day, Memphis announced that it had signed 12-year veteran Keyon Dooling to add depth to the roster for the playoffs.

Dooling retired last September after playing for the Boston Celtics last season. Over his career, Dooling has averaged 7.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He played the final 1 minute, 55 seconds and missed a 3-point attempt with 37 seconds left.

Aldridge was missing his fourth straight game because of a sprained right ankle. The two-time All-Star is averaging 21 points and 8.9 rebounds this season.

Batum has a labral tear in his right shoulder, causing him decreased strength and sensation. He apparently sustained the injury on Monday in Portland's 112-102 loss to Utah.

The 6-foot-8 French forward, who is averaging 14.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists, will be re-evaluated Friday before the Blazers host Houston.

Austin Daye hit a 3-pointer early in the second quarter that gave the Grizzlies a 39-23 lead. Randolph's hook shot extended it to 43-25, and Memphis took a 57-46 advantage into the half.

"I thought it was a solid win," Hollins said. "Early on offensively we were executing very well and we were getting whatever shot we wanted. Then in the second half our defense really amped it up. We held them to 30 points in the second half. We just had a good focus and we played a solid game all over."

The Grizzlies visit the Lakers on Friday.

Notes: Former Blazers C Greg Oden was at the game because he is good friends with Conley. The two played together at Ohio State. Oden, a former No. 1 draft pick for Portland whose five-year career with the team was marred by injuries, was greeted with cheers - and a few boos - when he was shown on the video scoreboard in the first quarter. Oden did not appear to return for the second half. ... Portland made just six free throws, its fewest in a game this season. They attempted 10. ... The Blazers are the only NBA team with four 1,000-point scorers this season: Aldridge (1,451), Lillard (1,425), Batum (1,047) and Wesley Matthews (1,001).

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies led wire-to-wire in a 94-76 rout of the Portland Trail Blazers Wednesday night at the Rose Garden.

Mike Conley scored 20 points and Zach Randolph added 17 points and eight assists for the Grizzlies (51-24), who won their fourth straight game and remained in a tie with Denver for third place in the Western Conference playoff race. J.J. Hickson totaled 17 points and nine rebounds and Damian Lillard had 17 and six assists for the Blazers (33-42), who lost their sixth consecutive game.

QUOTABLE: "It's not a motivation. The players might think about it, but I just want us to play well. We had homecourt last year and we lost the series [to the Los Angeles Clippers]. You just have to go play, and play well."

THE STAT: Portland scored only 30 second-half points, making 1-for-18 from 3-point range.

TURNING POINT: The Blazers cut what was once an 18-point deficit to 63-56 midway through the third quarter. The Grizzlies went on a 9-0 run and Portland never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "Memphis is a top seed in the West. We did some good things tonight, but you have to give [the Grizzlies] credit. They're a better team than we are."

HOT: Conley was 7-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-5 on 3-point attempts.

NOT: Memphis reserve Jerryd Bayless was 0-for-8 from the field.

GOOD MOVE: Hollins went deep into his bench and got plenty of good results, especially from Ed Davis, who was 5-for-6 from the field and contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds in only 18 minutes.

BAD MOVE: Nolan Smith, entering the game in garbage time for Portland, hoisted up back-to-back airballs. The reserve guard finished with two points on 1-for-4 shooting.

QUOTABLE III: "We moved the ball so well tonight that the offense came easier for us. Everybody touched the ball, everybody was engaged and involved in each play. When we play unselfish, it's pretty good for us."

NOTABLE: Portland played without starting forwards LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle) and Nicolas Batum (shoulder). ... Newly signed veteran guard Keyon Dooling saw his first action for Memphis, going scoreless in two minutes. ... The Blazers' starting lineup includes three rookies ? Lillard, Victor Claver and Meyers Leonard ? the first time the club has started three first-year players since January 2009 (Batum, Rudy Fernandez and Greg Oden)... Oden, rehabbing from his latest knee surgery, watched the game from courtside seats. The 7-footer is a free agent.
