Pistons-Celtics Preview

The Boston Celtics are limping toward the playoffs, and they're fully aware improvement is necessary to have any success in the postseason.

Their recent performances versus the Detroit Pistons shouldn't be used as an example.

Boston has a chance to clinch a playoff berth and will have Paul Pierce back in the lineup as it looks to avoid a fifth consecutive loss to visiting Detroit on Wednesday night.

Though season-ending injuries to Rajon Rondo (torn ACL) and Jared Sullinger (back surgery), along with the currently inflamed ankle of Kevin Garnett haven't made things easy, the Celtics (38-36) are clinging to the Eastern Conference's seventh seed, 1 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee.

While Boston can clinch a postseason berth with a win and a Philadelphia loss to Charlotte on Wednesday, it has dropped seven of nine after falling 110-100 at Minnesota on Monday.

Avery Bradley scored a team-high 19 points and said the Celtics still have a sense of urgency despite their recently disappointing results.

"We want to improve as a team every single game," Bradley said. "Paul (Pierce) and those guys let us know before every single game. When we are in the huddle, he lets us know that we need to keep taking steps forward to prepare for the playoffs."

Pierce wasn't there Monday, sitting out due to unspecified personal reasons. Coach Doc Rivers said Pierce definitely will play against the Pistons, though.

Jason Terry, who scored 14 points off the bench, was pretty vocal in Pierce's absence and said Boston is focused on going into the postseason on a high note.

"We will have plenty of time to game plan and practice. We will get there," Terry said. "There is nothing I haven't seen so I prepare for the best. The main thing is being optimistic and sticking together."

The Celtics, though, haven't been very good versus the Pistons lately, dropping the last four meetings by an average of 15.0 points. Detroit won the first two matchups this season at home, 103-83 on Nov. 18 and 103-88 on Jan. 20.

Greg Monroe combined for 35 points and 24 rebounds in those contests for the Pistons (25-50), who are winding down an otherwise disappointing campaign.

Detroit averaged just 89.4 points while dropping 13 of 14 in March before earning a 108-98 victory at Toronto on Monday, as Monroe finished with 24 points.

The Pistons shot 55.8 percent, second best only to the 58.1 percent they shot in a win over Miami on Dec. 28.

"We did a good job if withstanding their runs and responding with our own," Monroe said. "Guys showed a lot of fight."

Jose Calderon, who finished with 19 points and nine assists against his former team, said Detroit can be a dangerous team when everyone is clicking.

"When we have chemistry, when we are playing as a team, we have a lot of guys who can score the ball," Calderon said. "We were running the same play the last five or six minutes and everybody, different guys were getting shots. It was great, it was nice to see."

Detroit has allowed an average of 105.4 points over its last 11 games, though it has held Boston to 85.0 per game over the last four meetings.

Celtics hold on to beat Pistons, make playoffs

BOSTON (AP) Ray Allen left as a free agent. Rajon Rondo is out for the season. Kevin Garnett is recuperating from an ankle injury.

With the core of the Celtics team that won the franchise's 17th NBA title in 2008 otherwise occupied, Jeff Green led Boston back into the playoffs.

The Celtics swingman scored 34 points, including a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to snap a two-minute scoring drought, to help Boston beat the Detroit Pistons 98-93 on Wednesday night and clinch the team's sixth consecutive playoff berth.

"We knew we were a playoff team before the season started, despite the injuries and everything," said Paul Pierce, the only holdover from the team that won it all in 2008 and returned to the NBA finals two years later.

"The playoffs is a totally different game; it's nothing like the regular season. At least these guys will go out there and get their feet wet, see some shots go in, rebound the ball and get some experience."

Pierce and Brandon Bass scored 17 apiece, and Bass added seven rebounds for the Celtics, who had lost two in a row and seven of their previous nine.

The victory, coupled with Philadelphia's 88-83 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, left Boston 8 1/2 games ahead of the 76ers with eight games to play. It's the sixth consecutive season Boston has reached the playoffs since the New Big Three was assembled in the summer of 2007.

Even with Allen gone and Garnett missing seven straight games with an injured left ankle, the Celtics are back in the postseason. Boston is seventh in the Eastern Conference, two games behind sixth-place Chicago and 2 1/2 ahead of eighth-place Milwaukee.

"There was never any doubt in my mind or anybody in the locker room that we wouldn't be in the playoffs," said Jason Terry, who had 10 points and five rebounds.

Green came to Boston in the 2011 trade that sent Kendrick Perkins to Oklahoma City, but he missed all of last season after heart surgery.

Now he looks like the Celtics' best hope of making a postseason run.

"Jeff's a very, very good player, and I think (that's) what you've seen," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. "He got off to a tough start this year and obviously he had major, major, life-threatening surgery last year. ... I didn't like to see him do well tonight, but by and large every other game you pull for him, especially with what he went through."

Green scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and added six rebounds and four blocked shots in the game. He has become one of the players the Celtics look to for big plays as the clock runs down, sharing the role that Pierce had occupied for more than a decade.

"I don't try to take over games. We have `the Truth,"' Green said, calling Pierce by his nickname. "We feed off each other. If it's in my hands, I try to make a play. If it's in his hands, he'll try to make a play. We're playing off each other."

Greg Monroe had 24 points and 17 rebounds and Rodney Stuckey scored 22 for the Pistons.

The Celtics led by as many as 18 points before the Pistons scored the final 11 points of the third quarter and opened the fourth with Jonas Jerebko's three-point play. Boston went into another scoring slump late in the fourth, going 2 minutes, 9 seconds without a point while Detroit cut a 93-87 deficit down to two points.

But Green hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to give Boston a 96-91 lead. After Monroe got free for an easy dunk on an inbounds play, Terry missed; Charlie Villanueva, who went 2 for 17 from the floor and missed all eight 3-point attempts, missed from beyond the arc for Detroit.

Terry made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to clinch it.

"Just a rough night for me offensively. Couldn't buy a basket," Villanueva said. "Seems like there as a lid on the rim for me."

In all, the Pistons had 25 offensive rebounds and took 22 more shots than Boston. But Detroit shot 37 percent from the floor, including 17 percent from 3-point range, while the Celtics made more than half of their 2-pointers and 7 of 20 from 3-point range.

Notes: Monroe's 17 rebounds were one short of a season high. ... Pierce returned after missing one game for what he told WEEI.com was the birth of his son, Prince Pierce. .. Rondo, who is recovering from a torn ACL, visited his teammates at Wednesday's shootaround with a knee brace on. ... The Pistons won both previous games this season, both in Detroit. ... Pistons G Jose Calderon was a late scratch with a sore right arm. ... The Celtics bench was called for a technical foul, apparently for arguing about foul calls with 3:19 left in the game and an eight-point lead.

THE FACTS: Jeff Green had a game-high 34 points, helping lift the Boston Celtics to a hard fought 98-93 win over the Detroit Pistons at the TD Garden. With the victory, the Celtics clinched a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference for the sixth straight season. The clinched berth didn't come easy though Wednesday night. Boston led by as many as 18 points in the second half, but surrendered much of it during the fourth quarter, in a feisty Detroit comeback before being rescued by Green. The hybrid forward scored 13 of his 34 points in the frame, helping carry the short-handed Celtics into the postseason. Greg Monroe posted 24 points and 17 rebounds for the Pistons in the setback.

QUOTABLE: "You have seen a lot of flashes of that this year. A lot of times teams come into this game really focused on what I'm trying to do and the scouting report. And you've got a guy like Jeff who can put up big numbers like that, who can take over like that. It's fun, it's fun to watch and to be a part of."

THE STAT: The Celtics were able to escape with the win despite surrendering 25 offensive rebounds to the Pistons. That was one rebound shy of the NBA season-high for offensive rebounds in a game. Those 26 offensive rebounds posted by the Utah Jazz on November 17, 2012.

TURNING POINT: Leading by two with 45 seconds remaining in the contest, the Celtics looked to ice the game. Pierce drove the lane on the possession and found a wide-open Green in the corner, who drilled the 3-pointer to help put the game away.

QUOTABLE II: "I think a lot of guys are cheering for Jeff [Green]. They want him to do well; Chris (Wilcox) too. Our league, it's funny, we hate each other, we hate the opponent, but then when a guy goes down you really want them to get back healthy and do well. I mean, on every team. "

HOT: Green. The forward has stepped up in a big way with Kevin Garnett sidelined over the past two weeks. Green has averaged 23.8 points per game over the team's past five contests, 11 points above his season average.

NOT: Charlie Villanueva. The former UConn star missed 3-pointers, layups and everything in between Wednesday night. Villanueva misfired on 15 of his 17 shots, including on a fast break layup in the second half.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Brandon Bass. The power forward continued his consistent play of late, delivering Rivers 17 points and seven rebounds in 36 minutes of action.

ROOKIE WATCH: Andre Drummond. The 19-year-old out of Kentucky looked sharp in the fourth start at center of his NBA career, posting eight points and nine rebounds against an undersized Celtics front line.

NOTABLE: Kevin Garnett sat out his seventh straight game with a left ankle injury. .... Pierce returned to the starting lineup after missing Monday's loss against Minnesota for the birth of his first son. Prince Paul Pierce was born on Tuesday night. ... Jose Calderon sat out for Detroit with a sore right elbow. Rodney Stuckey started in his place. ...Detroit outscored Boston in the paint 58-28.
