Pacers-Clippers Preview

Coming off back-to-back losses, the Los Angeles Clippers are still one win away from reaching 50 for the first time in team history.

Coach Vinny Del Negro is hoping to see a stronger sense of urgency down the stretch.

Hoping to move a step closer to their first division title, the Pacific-leading Clippers return home looking to regroup Monday night against the surging Indiana Pacers.

While Los Angeles (49-25) beat New Orleans 105-91 on Wednesday to tie the 1974-75 team record for wins, it's had difficulty breaking the record. The Clippers fell 104-102 at San Antonio on Friday, then put on an embarrassing display the following night in a 98-81 loss at Houston.

Unable to take advantage of James Harden's absence, the Clippers were outscored 30-13 in the third quarter and 48-26 in the paint. Chris Paul had 19 points but was the only starter to play in the fourth as Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Caron Butler and Willie Green were benched.

"We were terrible, our effort was terrible, our attitude was terrible and our urgency was terrible," said Del Negro, whose team was playing its fourth game in five nights. "They know exactly how I feel, and they didn't say much. That's not what we're about."

Del Negro was especially upset with Griffin and Jamal Crawford, who both drew technical fouls for arguing calls.

"When that happens, it's a selfish act that doesn't make any sense, and it hurts the team," Del Negro said. "I've got a lot of whining going on and a lack of urgency going on and it's disappointing."

Though they haven't played up to par of late, the Clippers sit seven games ahead of Golden State in the Pacific with eight to go. Los Angeles, which joined the NBA as the Buffalo Braves in 1970-71, has never won its division.

"Every game now counts, it's a dogfight till the finish line," Grant Hill said. "We got to stop making excuses and look at ourselves and take responsibility. At this point in time, a nice win would be good. Just get a win, get back to playing Clipper basketball."

The Clippers could have a hard time bouncing back against the Pacers (47-27), winners in seven of eight. Having outscored opponents by an average of 12.0 points during its four-game run, Indiana stayed hot Saturday with a 112-104 victory at Phoenix.

Paul George had 25 points and all five starters scored at least 14 for the Pacers, who shot 34 of 46 from the foul line to set season highs in both categories. Indiana, which sits percentage points behind second-place New York in the Eastern Conference, improved to 20-3 when making at least 20 free throws.

"We try to pound it inside and force teams to foul us if they don't have great low post defenders, and then we pound the glass," coach Frank Vogel said. "We have ones, twos and threes that are good attackers as well."

Roy Hibbert added 20 points, Lance Stephenson 16, George Hill 15 and David West 14.

"We are a team that is filled with leaders," said Hibbert. "Paul took over in moments, David came in and closed the game out, George made some spectacular plays and Lance is our bulldog."

While Hibbert missed a 99-91 loss to the Clippers on Feb. 28 due to suspension, he could be a difference maker Monday. The All-Star center is averaging 19.8 points - 8.4 more than his season mark - and 11.2 rebounds over the last five games.

Paul had 29 points, Crawford scored 23 and Griffin posted 18 and 14 boards for Los Angeles in that Feb. 28 win.

Pacers hold on to beat Clippers 109-106

LOS ANGELES (AP) Roy Hibbert wasn't available the last time the Indiana Pacers faced the Los Angeles Clippers. This time he was, and that made all the difference Monday night in a battle between division leaders.

Hibbert scored 15 of his 26 points in the first quarter and grabbed 10 rebounds before fouling out, and the Pacers barely completed a sweep of their four-game road trip with a 109-106 victory.

"I just wanted to get out of the gates early, be aggressive, make the right plays and don't force things," Hibbert said. "Obviously, you don't want to lose a 24-point lead, but we got the victory. We knew they were going to make a run, but the fact that we weathered the storm is great."

Hibbert, who was serving a one-game suspension from the league when the Pacers lost to the Clippers 99-91 at Indianapolis on Feb. 28, made all eight of his shots in the first half and finished 11 for 14 from the field to help his team extend its winning streak to five and increase its Central Division lead to 6 1/2 games over idle Chicago. Paul George added 23 points and 10 assists.

Clippers center DeAndre Jordan, whose games this season have fluctuated between dominant and invisible, played 17 scoreless minutes and went to the bench for good with 6:26 left in the third quarter. The Clippers were outscored 42-25 while he was on the floor.

"Roy's good, man. He's skilled. He can use both hands and he's a big body," Jordan said. "They have a lot of guys who can drive, so you've got to help - and when you help, he's got the hammer. He really got going early on tonight. He didn't really get a lot of stuff in the post. It was more jump shots from the elbow."

All five Pacers starters scored in double figures, with David West getting 16 and backcourt mates Lance Stephenson and George Hill chipping in with 13 apiece.

Jamal Crawford scored 25 points off the bench for the Pacific Division-leading Clippers, whose magic number to clinch the first division title in the franchise's 43-year history remained at two. They failed on their third attempt at their 50th victory, which would break the franchise record set by the 1974-75 Buffalo Braves. Blake Griffin had 17 points.

Los Angeles is 2-4 since clinching its second straight playoff berth. The Clippers host Phoenix on Wednesday.

"We've had three chances to get to 50 wins, and we still haven't been able to do it. So Wednesday's a big game for us," said Chris Paul, who had 10 points and eight assists. "We've got to approach it like a playoff game. Most teams are approaching us like that. Every game is a big game, and we've got to try and get some wins before the playoffs."

West, playing his third game after missing the previous six with a lower back sprain, capped a 12-2 run on a 16-footer that gave the Pacers their biggest lead, 79-55, with 3:27 left in the third quarter.

The Clippers, playing almost the first 8 minutes of the fourth quarter with all of their starters on the bench, narrowed the gap to 89-81 on Eric Bledsoe's 11-footer with 7:24 to play.

West then tipped the ball away from Crawford near midcourt and got it back from George for a fast-break layup that gave the Pacers a nine-point edge. Paul reported back in with 4:07 remaining and set up Crawford at the right sideline for a 3-pointer that cut the margin to 97-93 with 3:38 left.

"They have the best bench in the game, and you've got to account for those guys," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "Jamal Crawford is a nightmare for coaches preparing to play those guys. They made a furious comeback, but our guys showed a great deal of guts."

Hibbert fouled out for the fifth time this season with 1:35 remaining and the Pacers ahead 99-93. The Clippers briefly seized the moment, as Paul converted the ensuing free throws and Griffin added a dunk to bring Los Angeles within 99-97 with 1:11 to go. But West canned a fadeaway jumper, and the Pacers clinched it by making all eight free throws in the final 32 seconds.

"I'm just disappointed," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "Just not enough effort from the starters to get us off to a good start, or a consistent 48 minutes of effort. We dug ourselves too big a hole and had to use a lot of energy from the bench to get us back in it. But they shot too high a percentage and made too many 3s (10 for 23)."

The Pacers never trailed, opening the game with a 10-0 run and holding a 51-43 lead at halftime. Clippers rugged forward Matt Barnes, who doesn't need much provocation to get agitated, was called for a flagrant foul 1 when he dragged Stephenson to the floor by the left arm near the Pacers' basket with 4:27 left in the third quarter and the Clippers in a 73-55 hole.

"Our first unit, I was disappointed in how we played," Paul said. "We didn't come out with any type of intensity, we weren't getting stops and we started off by giving them a 10-point cushion. If not for our second unit, the game would have been over a long time ago.

"In that third quarter we started coming back, but it's tough because you're almost in a situation where you can't mess up. Every play becomes a big play. We played great in the second half, it's just that we had to play almost perfect in order to win."

Los Angeles scored 100 points for the 45th time this season, equaling the most by the club since the 1993-94 squad did it 48 times under coach Bill Fitch. The franchise mark for triple-digit games is 73, set in 1978-79 under coach Gene Shue, when the Clippers played their first season in San Diego after leaving Buffalo. Their highest total in Los Angeles is 65 games, in 1992-93 under Larry Brown.

NOTES: The Pacers' 48-27 record is their best since they finished a franchise-best 61-21 in 2003-04. But they are only 19-19 on the road. ... The loss snapped the Clippers' franchise-record streak of 10 straight wins against Eastern Conference opponents. ... Los Angeles has a better winning percentage when Griffin scores fewer than 20 points (28-14) than it does when he gets 20 or more (20-11). ... Griffin's hurried 19-footer over Tyler Hansbrough from the left sideline was short, but Caron Butler made a leaping tip-in to beat the halftime buzzer. ... Clippers reserve F Lamar Odom - still looking for his 300th career double-double - came within one point of getting it and missed an attempted game-tying 3-point shot as time ran out. He has played in 128 regular-season games since his previous one on April 8, 2011, when he had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers at Portland.

THE FACTS: Two playoff-bound teams hurtling in opposite directions collided as the Indiana Pacers held on for a 109-106 victory against the Los Angeles Clippers Monday night at Staples Center.

It was the fifth straight victory for Indiana (48-27) and eighth in the last nine games. L.A. (49-26), meanwhile, has lost three in a row and four of its last five.

QUOTABLE: "Winning is contagious. I think we need to get that feeling back. Once you lose. ...you forget quickly what it's like to win."

THE STAT: Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro is reported to be on the hot seat if his team doesn't advance deep into the postseason. Del Negro vehemently expressed his displeasure after Saturday's one-sided loss to the undermanned Rockets. The Clippers don't seem to be reacting to his messages, especially coming out of halftime. In the last four games, the Clippers have been outscored 113-75 in the third quarter. They now sit alone in fifth in the Western Conference standings, the same spot they finished last season.

TURNING POINT: The Clippers did an admirable job rallying from a 24-point, third-quarter deficit to get within striking distance. They pulled within two points with 1:10 remaining in the game, but David West made a tough fall-away jumper against Blake Griffin. The Pacers then made all six free-throw attempts over the next 40 seconds to keep it a two-possession game. The Clippers finally got a chance to tie when Jamal Crawford was fouled before the ball was in-bounded, giving him a free throw and the ball out of bounds to L.A.. Crawford made the free throw to cut the deficit to three, but Paul's 3-point attempt rimmed out. Matt Barnes was there for the putback, but the Clippers still trailed by one. Paul George then made two more free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining. Out of timeouts, the Clippers threw a long inbounds pass to Griffin. He made a touch pass to Lamar Odom at the top of the 3-point line, but his attempt went a couple inches long as the clock expired.

HOT: Indiana center Roy Hibbert was a handful for the Clippers. He made his first eight field-goal attempts and was 11-for-14 from the floor with 26 points and 10 rebounds when he fouled out with 1:35 left and the Clippers about to cut the deficit to four. George also had a solid game back in his native Southern California, recording 23 points, 10 assists and four steals. It was the second time in his three-year career that George reached double digits in the assist department. As a group, the Pacers shot 54.9 percent.

NOT: Paul shot 50.5 percent from the floor in March, the second consecutive month he made at least half his shots. But he struggled mightily against the Pacers, finishing 2-for-12 from the floor with 10 points, eight assists and four turnovers. Even after Del Negro finally put him back on the floor with 4:07 left in the game and the Clippers training by eight, Paul showed an uncharacteristic lack of confidence in his outside shot. At one point with 2:29 left and L.A. trailing by four, he passed up an open look near the free-throw line and instead gave the ball to Odom, who badly missed another 3-point attempt.

GOOD MOVE: The defensive play of the game belonged to West. He snuck up behind Crawford with about 4 ½ minutes left in the game and tipped the ball away to George, who then gave it back to West for an uncontested dunk and a 97-88 lead. That's when Del Negro decided to put Paul back into the game. Clippers forward Caron Butler didn't have much of a game statistically, finishing with 10 points in 18 minutes, but he may have had the toughest tip in of the season. As the final seconds of the first half were ticking down, Griffin left his shot from the baseline short. But Butler soared in and swatted at the ball with his back to the rim, causing it to spin backward and then up and over the rim for two points.

BAD MOVE: Sure, the bench got the Clippers back into the game after the starters let Indiana build a 24-point lead. But keeping Paul on the bench for that long of the fourth quarter was tough to stomach for a lot of L.A. fans. Griffin, the team's leading scorer and rebounder on the season, remained on the bench even longer in the fourth, not returning to the floor until 2:15 remained.

NOTABLE: The Clippers still need one more victory to set a franchise record for a season. ... L.A. had its franchise-record 10-game winning streak against the Eastern Conference ended. ... Clippers center DeAndre Jordan shot 55-for-65 from the field in March, but missed his only two field-goal attempts in 16 minutes against the Pacers. ... Back-up center Ryan Hollins played a season-high 32 minutes, the most of any player on the Clippers. ... Indiana back-up center Ian Mahinmi left the game in the second quarter with a right shoulder contusion but returned in the second half.
