Celtics-Timberwolves Preview

With the Boston Celtics struggling and Kevin Garnett still sidelined, the team's opportunity to improve its playoff seeding is fading.

But on Monday night in Minnesota, they'll try to take advantage of a Timberwolves team they've won 11 straight against. Ten of those victories have come since Garnett was traded to Boston in the summer of 2007.

The Celtics (38-35) have lost six of eight overall and six of seven on the road following a 108-89 defeat against the Knicks on Sunday. They remain in seventh in the East, 2 1/2 games back of Atlanta and 2 1/2 in front of Milwaukee.

Sunday was their fifth straight game without Garnett, who has been sidelined with inflammation in his left ankle. Coach Doc Rivers said Friday that the team was intending to stick to its initial two-week timetable for Garnett's return, which would likely see him miss two more games this week against Detroit and Cleveland in addition to Monday's contest.

The absence of Garnett - Boston's leading rebounder with 7.8 per game - has had an effect on the boards, with the Celtics giving up an average rebounding margin of minus-4.8 over the last five. Garnett is also the club's second-leading scorer averaging 14.9 points.

Boston could also be without leading scorer Paul Pierce (18.7 ppg) on Monday after he turned his ankle during Sunday's loss.

"I feel like when we're healthy we can compete with anybody," said Jeff Green, who scored 27 against the Knicks and is averaging 20.2 points on 52.5 percent shooting over his last 10 contests. "We have a chance on it, whoever we match up against."

Despite being long removed from the playoff hunt, the Timberwolves (26-46) have been more competitive recently, splitting their last six games, including an impressive victory over Oklahoma City on Friday.

It seemed they were on track for another surprising win Saturday against Memphis, but they allowed a 16-2 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter on the way to a 99-86 defeat.

"I just think at one point we looked like we were trying to win the game in one possession," coach Rick Adelman said. "Trying to making hero plays and super plays. Just try to make solid plays."

Nikola Pekovic is listed as questionable after sitting out against the Grizzlies because of the sprained left ankle he suffered Friday, the latest in a litany of injuries for Minnesota this year.

The Timberwolves have seen a positive with Ricky Rubio continuing to look more like he did before tearing his ACL last March. He's averaging 13.8 points and 8.6 assists over his last 28 games, compared to 5.5 points and 5.4 assists in his first 19 games back from the injury.

Boston's offense has slowed to a crawl away from home, averaging 88.7 points over its last seven road games. The Celtics have also struggled to defend the 3-point line of late, allowing their last three opponents to go 29 of 64 from beyond the arc (45.3 percent), though the Timberwolves rank last in 3-point percentage (30.0).

The Celtics claimed a 104-94 home victory in the season's first meeting Dec. 5. Pierce and Garnett each scored 18 points as Boston shot 52.6 percent from the floor, though Rubio was still sidelined for Minnesota.

Pekovic hammers Celtics in Minnesota's 110-100 win

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Ever since Minnesota traded him to Boston six years ago, Kevin Garnett has always come in and bullied his old team to devastating effect.

Garnett wasn't in the building to save the Celtics on Monday night. Without him roaming the paint, Nikola Pekovic flattened the reeling Celtics.

Pekovic bruised and battered the overmatched Boston front line for 29 points to lead the Timberwolves to a 110-100 victory.

"We had no one that could deal with that big monster they had down there," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

Andrei Kirilenko had 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and Dante Cunningham scored 19 points off the bench for the Wolves, who delivered coach Rick Adelman his 998th career victory.

Avery Bradley scored 19 points for Boston, which was playing without Paul Pierce and Garnett. The Celtics, who are just 1 1/2 games ahead of eighth-place Milwaukee in the Eastern Conference playoff race, have lost seven of their last nine games.

This one snapped an 11-game winning streak against the Wolves, who beat Boston for the first time since Garnett was traded there in 2007.

Jeff Green had a quiet night with just 10 points and seven rebounds, while Jason Terry and Terrence Williams each scored 14 points for Boston, which was a step slow on the second night of a back-to-back.

"Big emphasis, get your mind right, whatever you have to do individually to do that, that's what we need, because you're going to have to be so locked in," Celtics veteran Jason Terry said after circling the locker room to try to boost his teammates' spirits.

Without Garnett there to throw elbows and spew intensity, the thin Celtics frontcourt was powerless to stand up to Pekovic in the paint. He bulled his way to the bucket for 15 points in the first quarter. And when he wasn't scoring, he was racking up the fouls on Chris Wilcox and Shavlik Randolph, the only two big men left on the roster. Wilcox didn't last five minutes before picking up his second foul and Randolph had three by early in the second quarter.

"They just didn't have anybody," Adelman said. "With all their guys out, especially when Wilcox got in foul trouble right away, we did a nice job of finding him, and he did a great job of being active."

After missing the game against Memphis on Saturday with a sprained left ankle, Pekovic jumped right back into the middle of things and forced the Celtics to throw double-teams at him in the post. The Wolves outscored Boston 62-38 in the paint and Pekovic was a perfect 11 for 11 from the foul line. It was the kind of commanding performance against an overmatched opponent that could earn the big fella a lot of money this summer.

Pekovic will be a restricted free agent come July 1, and the Wolves want to retain him. But centers are hard to come by in this day and age, and he could have several suitors.

"I hope it's here," Pekovic said. "That's what I'm thinking about only. That's my preference, to stay here. I like it. I enjoy it. I hope I'll stay."

For once, the Timberwolves had the healthiest team on the floor.

One day after twisting his left ankle against the Knicks, Pierce did not make the trip because of personal reasons and Rajon Rondo has been out since the end of January with a torn ACL in his right knee. Garnett, the face of the Timberwolves franchise for 12 years, was not in town either while he dealt with inflammation in his left ankle, much to the chagrin of a Minnesota basketball community that still adores him.

Boston's annual visit to Target Center is still one of the most anticipated games of the year, with Minnesota fans pulling on their blue No. 21s and their green No. 5s to cheer for the biggest star the team has ever had. Without KG in the building, the crowd was rather subdued, and Rivers openly hoped that it wouldn't be the last time Garnett had a chance to play in Minnesota.

"Every year we don't know if it's his last time," Rivers said before the game. "Obviously I hope not and we all hope not, but you never know with Kevin. Every summer from this point on in his career he's going to decide if he's coming back or not. I would hope that this isn't (his last year) because I think you would want him to play in this last game here. So let's hope that this isn't."

NOTES: The Celtics whistled for 21 fouls in the game, while the Timberwolves got just 11. ... The Timberwolves scored a season-high 23 fast-break points. ... Ricky Rubio had nine points and 10 assists for the Timberwolves.

THE FACTS: The Minnesota Timberwolves took advantage of a team even more injury-riddled than them, defeating the Boston Celtics 110-100 Monday night. Nikola Pekovic paced the Wolves with a season-high 29 points while Andrei Kirilenko added 17 points, nine boards and five assists. The pairs' solid interior play led to a massive 62-to-38 advantage for the Wolves in the paint against the much smaller and depleted Celtics.

Avery Bradley had 19 points for Boston who were without all of their current Big Three as Paul Pierce missed the game with an ankle injury he suffered last night in New York. Their reserves were no match for the Wolves interior attack. Pekovic scored 15 first quarter points and without Garnett, and with Chris Wilcox in foul trouble, the Celtics had no effective way to control him throughout the night. Minnesota's win snapped an 11 game losing streak to the Celtics.

QUOTABLE I: "They really didn't have an answer for Pek. Pek got us going at the start of the game and carried right on through. With all their guys out, especially when Wilcox got in foul trouble right away, we did a nice job of finding him and he did a great job of being active. We didn't mention (he only had) five rebounds....he said he was an offensive player tonight."

TURNING POINT: In a game devoid of signature moves or defining moments, the Timberwolves quietly put together a 17-6 run at the end of the second quarter and into the third. The run gave the Wolves their first double-digit lead and Boston was unable to recover as they never got closer than six points from there.

HOT: Minnesota's offense. After a temporary hiccup against Memphis on Saturday in which they scored just 86 points, the Wolves continued their recent offensive assault which has seen them average 104 points over their past seven contests. They had five players in double figures tonight, and committed only eight turnovers -- the 18th time in the past 22 games they've had fewer turnovers than their opponent.

QUOTABLE II: "We are moving the ball better. We have a better understanding of what we want to do. Especially when Pek is out there we know he is going to draw attention going in. Our guards are doing a nice job. I think a lot of it is with Ricky (Rubio), Luke (Ridnour), J.J. (Barea), and Lexi (Shved)....we get all four of those guys making good decisions and it really helps."

NOT: Boston is stumbling towards the post-season. While a playoff berth is not in jeopardy with an eight-game lead over ninth place Milwaukee, the Celtics have now lost seven of nine and look nowhere near ready to battle Miami, New York, or Indiana in the first round. Even with Pierce in the lineup, New York blew out Boston on Monday 108-89.

GOOD MOVE: Playing starters Rubio and Pekovic for over 20 minutes each in the first half. The two Europeans never stopped moving on offense or defense, and that consistent energy kept the Wolves from the long scoring droughts they experienced against Memphis on Saturday.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Kirilenko was the main fantasy standout tonight as he added two steals for a four-category contribution -- a line reminiscent to his days in Utah when he stuffed the stat sheet on a nightly basis.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Timberwolves fans were disappointed Garnett was injured in his only visit back to Minnesota this year, particularly as Garnett's career winds down. Garnett was drafted 5th overall in 1995 by the Wolves and played 12 seasons for Minnesota.

QUOTABLE III: "Every year we don't know if it's his last time (returning to Minnesota.) We all hope not. But you never know with Kevin. Every summer from this point on in his career he's going to decide if he's coming back or not. You'd want him to play in his last game here, so let's hope this isn't."

NOTABLE: Pekovic saw his streak end at 68 games in which he has grabbed an offensive rebound. It was the 2nd longest streak in the NBA to injured teammate Kevin Love's current 75 game run....The Wolves were 5 of 18 from beyond the arc tonight, dropping them below 30 percent the season. Only one NBA team (Charlotte) in the last 10 years has finished below 30 percent from 3-point range....The victory brought Adelman to within two of 1,000 career wins. Only seven other coaches have reached this mark.....Rivers said before the game that he expects Pierce to play Wednesday against Detroit.....Jeff Green had just 10 points tonight after averaging 23.5 points in his last four games.
