The Golden State Warriors blew an opportunity in their last game to distance themselves from teams battling for playoff seeding in the Western Conference - despite facing a club far removed from postseason contention.

They'll hope to not make the same mistake again on Saturday night when they host the Portland Trail Blazers, who appear to have all but removed themselves from the race with three consecutive losses.

The Warriors (41-32) currently own the sixth seed in the West by 1 1/2 games over Houston, but failed to increase that margin with Wednesday's 105-98 loss to Sacramento, now 27-46.

Golden State had won six of eight before the disappointing result against a team with much less to play for.

"There's no excuse for it, especially at this point in the season," Andrew Bogut said. "No disrespect to Sacramento, but we're playing for more than April 17."

The Warriors will hope to get their backcourt on track after Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson struggled against the Kings, going 6 of 31 from the floor.

As good as Curry has been - seventh in the league in scoring with 22.4 points per game and third in 3-point shooting at 45.2 percent - Thompson's performances have more accurately predicted Golden State's success this season.

Thompson is averaging 13.9 points on 37.3 percent shooting - including a 33.2 percent mark from beyond the arc - in the team's 32 losses. In 41 wins, he's scoring 18.2 per game while shooting 44.9 percent and 44.3 percent from 3-point range.

He scored just four points on 1-of-13 shooting on Wednesday and is 24 of 70 (34.3 percent) over his last five games.

"One thing with Klay, he was holding his head down a little bit," coach Mark Jackson told the league's official website. "He's a shooter. Those are shots I'll take and I don't care what anybody says. That was not the reason we lost this game."

For Portland (33-39), leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge (21.0 ppg) won't travel with the team after spraining his right ankle on Wednesday. He was unavailable in Friday's home game against Utah, and it proved costly in a 105-95 loss, the Blazers' third straight, pushing them 3 1/2 games behind the Lakers for the conference's final playoff spot.

Meyers Leonard made the third start of his rookie season, finishing with 12 points in place of Aldridge.

"We're still playing to make the playoffs," said J.J. Hickson, who had 17 points and 14 rebounds Friday. "I know our window is definitely smaller at this point, but as long as we've got a chance, we're going to keep playing hard and we're going to play with integrity."

Rookie sensation Damian Lillard will try to follow up a spectacular performance in his hometown of Oakland in the teams' first meeting on Jan. 11, when he scored a season-high 37 points, though the Warriors managed a 103-97 victory.

Aldridge's absence could also be a major factor on the defensive end for Portland. The Blazers already struggle to stop teams inside, allowing a league-worst 46.8 points in the paint per game, while Golden State is coming off a season-high 68 points in the paint against Sacramento.

David Lee had 20 points and 10 rebounds, his league-leading 27th game with at least those numbers.

Curry's 39 leads Warriors past Blazers, 125-98

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) With another mercurial performance in what has already been an outstanding season, Stephen Curry helped Golden State inch closer to the postseason.

Now it's just a matter of holding court in the Western Conference for the upstart Warriors.

Curry scored 39 points and Golden State moved one step closer to ending its five-year playoff drought with a 125-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night.

It's the 12th time this season Curry has had 30 points or more, and his seven 3-pointers extended his single-season franchise record to 236.

"It's amazing the clinic he's putting on," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "We are witnessing one of the greatest shooters that's ever played this game. He's been great for us all season, but he's on the floor like he's the baddest dude in the building."

Curry was definitely that on a night he was paired against Portland's standout rookie, Damian Lillard.

Lillard, who scorched the Warriors for a season-high 37 points in January, scored 16 points and tied Curry's' NBA's single-season rookie record for 3-pointers, but was nowhere as effective as he was in his first trip back home. The Oakland native shot just 4 of 11 from the floor and committed three turnovers.

Carl Landry had a season-high 25 points and 10 rebounds coming off the bench, while David Lee scored 13 points for the Warriors, who maintained their 1 1/2-game lead over Houston for sixth place in the Western Conference. Golden State lowered its magic number for clinching a playoff berth to five.

"Our goal is to be playing our best basketball these next eight games to put ourselves in position to make the playoffs and to not just be that team that goes to the playoffs and gets swept," Curry said. "We have that bigger picture in mind. We're not looking in the rearview mirror."

Curry showed why he's one of the elite perimeter shooters in the league.

He went 14 of 22 from the floor and had six assists and five rebounds in his most impressive outing since scoring an NBA season-high 54 points against the New York Knicks on Feb. 27.

"We have confidence he can have nights like that, but it's still unbelievable to be out there when he gets in a groove like that," Lee said. "The level of difficulty on a lot of the shots he's hitting is unbelievable."

That helped the Warriors to their third win in four games. Golden State hasn't made the playoffs since stunning top-seeded Dallas in the first round of the 2007 postseason.

Curry also moved past Tim Hardaway into second place on the Warriors' career list for 3-pointers. Jason Richardson (700) holds the franchise record.

Meyers Leonard led Portland with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Playing their second straight game without leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge (right ankle), the Blazers trailed by six late in the second quarter, but gave up 60 points in the second half.

"They made a lot of tough shots, but they also got a lot of easy baskets," Lillard said. "I thought we defended well about half the time. With a guy who can shoot like (Curry), you can't let him get so many open looks."

Lillard had a career night in his first trip back to Oakland as a pro earlier this season and got off to another quick start in his return. He scored seven points, had four assists and made two 3-pointers in the first quarter to tie Curry's NBA rookie single-season record of 166.

That wasn't enough to slow down the Warriors, who shot 72.7 percent in the first quarter and closed on a 12-3 run to take a 36-31 lead.

Landry scored Golden State's final four points in the period, then scored the team's first seven in the second quarter to put the Warriors up 43-34.

Portland cut the gap to 61-55 with 1:07 left before Andrew Bogut scored on a short hook shot and Harrison Barnes added a dunk that gave Golden State a 65-55 halftime lead.

Curry didn't slow down after the break. He made two lob passes for assists on dunks by Barnes and Bogut, then later scored on a driving layup and 3-pointer to make it 90-70.

Curry hit more two more 3s in the fourth quarter, the second of which extended the Warriors' lead to 110-85.

THE FACTS: Stephen Curry rebounded from a subpar performance with one of his best of the season, burying the Portland Trail Blazers with 39 points, six assists and five rebounds as the Golden State Warriors cruised to a 125-98 victory Saturday night.

Curry went 5-for-18 as the Warriors were shocked 105-98 by visiting Sacramento on Wednesday, but made sure there would be no such success for the Trail Blazers, whose late-season playoff run was pretty much halted in its tracks by a devastating collapse against Utah on Friday.

Curry sank all five shots in the first quarter, including a trio of 3-pointers, and finished 14-for-22 with seven treys. His 39 points ranked second on the season behind his career-high 54-point explosion at Madison Square Garden last month.

The decision clinched the Warriors' third winning season since 1993-94 and allowed sixth-place Golden State (42-32) to keep pace ahead of Houston (40-33), Utah (38-36) and the Lakers (38-36), all of whom won Saturday as well.

Portland rookie Damian Lillard, an Oakland native who dropped a career-high 37 against the Warriors on Jan. 11 in his first visit back to the Bay Area, was held to a 4-for-11 shooting night and 16 points this time. As All-Star big man LaMarcus Aldridge remained in Portland to treat a sprained right ankle, rookie center Meyers Leonard filled in for the Trail Blazers (33-40) with career highs in points (22) and rebounds (10).

THE STAT: With his onslaught from behind the arc, Curry moved past Tim Hardaway and into possession of second place on the Warriors' career list for 3-point shooters, with 608. Jason Richardson is the club's all-time leader at 700. Of more immediate note, Curry has 236 3-pointers this season, and is on pace to knock down 263. If Curry has another couple of big nights over the Warriors' final eight games, Ray Allen's all-time NBA record of 269, set with Seattle in 2005-06, could be in real jeopardy.

TURNING POINT: Aldridge's absence was not felt too keenly by the Trail Blazers in their first unit, since Leonard stepped in for a second straight night and did a more-than-credible job in just his fourth career start. But the domino effect meant the Warriors' first big man off the bench, Carl Landry, was going up against the likes of rookies Victor Claver and Joel Freeland, with ugly results for the visitors; Landry racked up 11 points for the Warriors in his first 4:08 on the floor, helping Golden State go on a 17-3 run to bridge the first and second quarters. That push staked the Warriors to a 47-34 lead, and they never trailed again.

QUOTABLE II: "The kid (Curry) was lights out. He's been like that all season. He's an All-Star without the label. ... The way he's shooting the ball, nothing's farfetched. I wouldn't put (breaking Allen's record) past him."

HOT: You could have your pick of highlight moments for Curry, but perhaps his most showman-like sequence came in the third quarter. It began with an acrobatic layup -- replete with a crash into a courtside cameraman -- continued with a steal at the other end and then, after nailing a pull-up 3 in transition, finished with Curry posing, perpendicular to the basket, as the Trail Blazers called timeout down 90-70. By the time Curry came to the bench -- along with everyone on the floor, as Jackson made a wholesale victory substitution with 6:19 remaining -- Andrew Bogut was waiting with a towel to try to fan off the red-hot Curry.

NOT: Portland's bench was entirely overmatched. Before the Warriors called off the dogs midway through the fourth quarter, Golden State's reserves held a 33-10 edge in scoring, and shot 12-for-18 to Portland's combined total of 3-for-17.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Landry was the biggest beneficiary of the poor play from Portland's reserves, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds, his second game with such numbers in his career. It was the first 25/10 performance by a Warriors reserve since Anthony Randolph hung 28 and 13 on Orlando on Dec. 5, 2009.

ROOKIE WATCH: Leonard continues to blossom for the Trail Blazers. He had never before carded an NBA double-double, and he also drained his first career 3-pointer as a pro.

INSIDE THE ARENA: A confluence of events brought a surprising amount of star power to Oracle Arena. TV star Matthew Perry sat courtside, next to Warriors co-owner and well-known Hollywood producer Peter Guber. Oakland A's outfielders Josh Reddick and Coco Crisp walked across the hall from the O.co Coliseum after finishing a 4-3 afternoon win against the San Francisco Giants to close out the club's spring training schedule. And former nine-time NBA All-Star Gary Payton -- himself an Oakland-bred point guard -- was in the house, presumably to see Lillard.

NOTABLE: Portland forward J.J. Hickson had his 40th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards. ... Warriors forward Harrison Barnes will likely have a starring role in Nicolas Batum's nightmares for the next couple of weeks. Barnes delivered powerful slams for his first two buckets, each time beating Batum off the dribble to get to the rim. ... Wesley Matthews knocked down a pair of 3-pointers en route to 18 points, making the Trail Blazers the first team to have three players with at least 160 treys in the same season since the 2007-08 Phoenix Suns, who saw Leandro Barbosa, Raja Bell and Steve Nash reach that same plateau. ... With two makes pushing his total to 166 for the season, Lillard tied Curry's mark for most 3-pointers by a rookie.
