Grizzlies-Timberwolves Preview

The Memphis Grizzlies are within striking distance of another top-four finish in the Western Conference but could use some wins away from home if they want to make a serious push.

The Grizzlies will try to end a season-high five-game road losing streak Saturday night by continuing their dominance over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Memphis (48-24) is only a half-game behind the fourth-place Los Angeles Clippers in the West and one game back of third-place Denver, but the Grizzlies haven't helped themselves with their recent road woes.

Their five-game skid away from home is their longest since they dropped six straight Nov. 15-Dec. 6, 2010, but they might have a prime opportunity to end that losing streak Saturday. Memphis has won 10 in a row over Minnesota (26-45) and four straight at the Target Center.

With the playoffs right around the corner, the Grizzlies could use some road momentum as they'll play four of their next five games away from Memphis.

The Grizzlies are coming off Friday's 103-94 victory over Houston following back-to-back defeats. Zach Randolph had 21 points and 12 rebounds after scoring a season-low three points and grabbing four boards in Wednesday's loss at New York.

"Man, it's an 82-game season. Even MJ (Michael Jordan) had bad games. It's just part of it," said Randolph, who topped 20 points for the first time since Feb. 27.

Marc Gasol also scored 21 in his second game back from an abdominal tear and helped his team avoid a third straight loss.

"It's always good to be able to be back home and win, especially after we lost a couple of games on the road," Gasol said. "Offensively, I think we did a good job 70 percent of the game, 30 percent we didn't do so good, but we got the win."

The Grizzlies haven't need too much help from Randolph or Gasol when facing Minnesota this season, winning two matchups by a combined 32 points. Mike Conley had 20 points and paced five Grizzlies in double figures in a 92-77 victory over the Timberwolves on March 18.

Tayshaun Prince scored 18 while Conley, Randolph and Austin Daye added 16 apiece in a 105-88 home rout Feb. 10.

The Grizzlies, who finished fourth in the West in 2011-12, are making their first visit to the Target Center since a 91-84 victory April 17, and will face a team that's alternated wins and losses in its last six games.

The Timberwolves scored a surprising 101-93 home win over Northwest Division-leading Oklahoma City on Friday as Nikola Pekovic had 22 points and 15 rebounds. It was the best scoring performance for the center in eight games since returning from an abdominal strain.

"I'm just really proud of how the guys played," coach Rick Adelman said. "(Pekovic) had it really going inside and it's just a solid win against one of the best teams in the league.

"We keep talking about beating good teams, and there's no reason we can't do that. Maybe tonight is going to give us some confidence."

Ricky Rubio, who had 17 points and seven assists Friday, is averaging 13.8 points and 8.0 assists in six games since finishing with two points on 1-of-6 shooting and two assists against Memphis.

Grizzlies pull away to beat Timberwolves 99-86

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies broke out of their road slump the only way they know how: by locking down on defense.

Marc Gasol scored 21 points and the Grizzlies pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 99-86 on Saturday night.

Mike Conley scored 19, Zach Randolph 14 and Darrell Arthur had 12 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter for the Grizzlies, who ended a five-game road losing streak with their 11th straight victory over Minnesota.

"It's huge," Conley said. "We've lost some games we probably could have won. To beat a team that is playing well like Minnesota is always a big win. We're trying to get to that third spot, that fourth spot. We're right there if we can keep winning."

Memphis, playing its seventh game in 11 days, moved a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers for the fourth-best record in the tight Western Conference and is a half-game behind third-place Denver.

"You definitely got to beat a team like this, but more importantly, you've got to come out and play your style and try to play the best way you possibly can," said forward Tayshaun Prince, who finished with four points. "The bench guys showed they have some legs for us and played with some energy when they came out on the floor. That's what was able for us to get the win."

Minnesota's Ricky Rubio just missed his second career triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Derrick Williams added 19 points for the Timberwolves, who were playing without center Nikola Pekovic. He missed the game after spraining his left ankle Friday late in a victory over Oklahoma City after scoring 22 points and adding 15 rebounds.

"We had shot after shot, but you've got to make plays," said Minnesota coach Rick Adelman. "I thought defensively we were hanging in there in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the floodgates opened and they started knocking down shots. We couldn't get anything going. Had no answer."

Arthur scored nine points during a 16-2 run to start the final period, including a 3-pointer and follow shot, to give the Grizzlies an 81-69 lead with 7 minutes to play. A long jumper and a 3-pointer by Quincey Pondexter stretched the lead to 86-73.

Not only did Memphis start to hit shots, it also picked up its defensive intensity. Minnesota had just one basket, a 3-pointer by Rubio, in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter, and also held the Wolves to 43.3 percent for the game.

"In that second half we kind of just hit a wall offensively," said Chase Budinger, who was 1 for 6 from the field. "Give credit to them. They're probably the best defensive team in the league at taking on the pick-and-roll."

In his third game back after missing two games with an abdominal tear, Gasol also had eight rebounds and six assists.

"Right now he's one of the top three centers in the league. He's doing a great job. He knows how to play," Rubio said. "He can assist like a point guard. He shoots the mid-range very well. And on defense it's tough because he's so big. He's great."

Rubio had nine points in the first quarter, including five during a 12-2 run that put Minnesota up 25-17.

The Minnesota reserves pushed the lead to 37-26, including a desperation 3-pointer by Alexey Shved, before the Grizzlies tightened up on defense and went on a 13-2 run to get within one late in the first half. However, Rubio scored on a drive at the buzzer to give Minnesota a 50-45 halftime lead.

NOTES: The Grizzlies are 20-16 on the road, setting a franchise record for road wins in a season. ... Adelman remains three wins shy of 1,000 for his career. ... Jerryd Bayless finished with two points for the Grizzlies. He'd been averaging 19.1 points in his last eight games. ... The Timberwolves had seven of their 17 turnovers in the third quarter and went 4 for 14 from the field in the period, scoring 17 points.

THE FACTS: It wasn't easy at first, but the Memphis Grizzles (49-24) eventually continued their dominance over Minnesota (26-46), defeating the injury-riddled Timberwolves 99-86 on Saturday. Marc Gasol led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Mike Conley added 19 to give the Grizzlies their 11th straight win against Minnesota, including two early blow outs in the last six weeks. Ricky Rubio led the Wolves with a near triple-double, finishing 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

The Wolves started strong, getting out to a 30-23 first quarter lead. But playing without injured center Nikola Pekovic (sprained left ankle) eventually caught up to them. The interior size of Memphis forced the Wolves to consistently settle for jump shots or wild drives to the hoop, and the Grizzlies' second-rated defense allowed only 56 more points the rest of the way. With the win, Memphis slipped ½ game ahead of the LA Clippers for the fourth seed in the Western Conference.

QUOTABLE I: "They are in the paint. You are not going to make interior plays. You've got to find people on the outside, and then the second part to that is to make the shot. They are a very solid defensive team and they know exactly what they have to do to win. They took the game away from us in the second half."

TURNING POINT: After the Timberwolves finished an 11-3 run early in the second quarter to take a 38-26 lead, the Grizzlies locked in and went on a 13-2 run, holding the Timberwolves to just two points on 1 for 10 shooting over the next 6 ½ minutes and quickly getting back into the game.

THE STAT: The Grizzlies defense didn't stop there as they continued to shut Minnesota down the rest of the way. The Wolves scored their 30 first quarter points on 64.7 percent shooting, but Memphis defense forced Minnesota into shooting 18-50 over the next three quarters to finish a bleak 43.3 percent for the game.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought our defense kept us in the game. We held them to 36 points in the second half and really clamped down and took control of the game."

HOT: Memphis on the road this season. With the win tonight, Memphis is now 20-16 away from home, setting a franchise record for most road victories in a season. If the Grizzlies have any championship aspirations, they have to continue this trend as no NBA team in the last 25 years has won a championship without winning at least 21 road games during the regular season.

NOT: The Wolves in back-to-backs this season. After defeating Oklahoma City last night, they had a chance to sweep both nights -- something they haven't done since December 14 and 15 when they beat New Orleans and Dallas.

QUOTABLE III: "I don't like to hear those things. I didn't know it was on my back. Now that you told me I guess, yeah, it'd be nice."
-- Adelman responding to whether he wanted to get the "monkey off his back" and win on back-to-back nights for the first time in over three months.

GOOD MOVE: With Pekovic a late scratch, Adelman stayed big against the Grizzlies by inserting Greg Stiemsma into the starting lineup. Stiemsma filled the stat sheet with four points, two steals, a rebound, assist, and block in the opening quarter, helping the Wolves get out to an opening lead.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Just when owners thought they could count on the oft-injured Pekovic for a consistent source of points and rebounds, he turned up as a very late scratch with a sprained left ankle. Even Adelman was unaware of the injury in his pre-game press conference.

ROOKIE WATCH: Timberwolves forward Alexey Shved seems to be getting the "rookie treatment" from NBA officiating crews. Despite playing 25 minutes a game and regularly driving to the basket, Shved is averaging just 2.2 free throws a game. He got leveled on a 3-point attempt by Tony Allen early in the second quarter, but no call was made. After the play, Allen spent some time explaining to an incredulous Timberwolves bench how he got "all ball" when he slapped it away.

NOTABLE: With two steals tonight, Conley has recorded a steal in 64 consecutive games. Only Michael Jordan and Chris Paul have had longer streaks since Conley was born in 1987. Paul's streak is an NBA-record 108 games......Paul currently leads the league in steals at 2.41 a game over Conley's 2.31. Rubio would rank second at 2.33 if he had enough games to qualify......Memphis is now just one win short of a the franchise record of 50 wins. Since he became head coach in 2009, Hollins has improved the team's record every season....With the loss tonight, Adelman remains three wins shy of 1,000 for his career.
