The Miami Heat were ready to focus on other goals not long after ending one of the longest win streaks in NBA history.

The Heat can achieve one of those, clinching the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, by ending a lengthy road losing streak to the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night.

Miami (56-15) had its run of 27 consecutive wins snapped with a 101-97 defeat in Chicago on Wednesday but hardly seemed downtrodden. The Heat came closer than any other team to matching the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers' NBA-record 33-game run.

"It was a heck of an experience for all of us to have together. We took a moment to acknowledge it (after the game) and acknowledge each other, but it was never about the streak. We have a bigger goal," coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The Heat can put themselves in a stronger position for another championship run with a victory against lowly New Orleans (25-47) or a New York loss to visiting Charlotte on Friday. Miami finished second in the East last season before capturing the second title in franchise history, but is currently two games ahead of San Antonio for the NBA's best record.

"The streak wasn't important to us. What's important to us is winning the title. That's what we work on. That's what we're here for," center Chris Bosh said.

The Heat have earned No. 1 seeds twice in their history, in the 1998-99 lockout-shortened season and in 2004-05. They didn't win an NBA title either time, and were eliminated by New York in the first round in 1999.

Before any postseason concerns, Miami will first try to end a six-game road losing streak to the Hornets. The first two losses in that skid occurred in Oklahoma City.

The Heat, though, haven't visited New Orleans since Nov. 5, 2010, and have won the past three games in the series by an average of 14 points. They shot 58.0 percent in a 106-90 home victory over the Hornets on Dec. 8.

This time, they'll face a team that had a three-game win streak snapped Wednesday with a 105-91 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Clippers. New Orleans trailed by two points entering the fourth quarter but was outscored 26-14 in those final 12 minutes.

The Hornets didn't help themselves by missing 10 of 14 3-point attempts and giving up 20 points off 12 turnovers. The injury-plagued Eric Gordon had a team-best 24 points - three shy of matching his season high.

"We kind of beat ourselves. We really didn't move the ball very well and we took tough shots," forward Ryan Anderson said. "We didn't really battle. We just didn't have it like we had the last couple of games."

Gordon and No. 1 overall draft pick Anthony Davis sat out the game in Miami. Anderson had 24 points and Robin Lopez scored 20, but only one other player reached double figures.

Dwyane Wade, who returned from a sore right knee Wednesday, had a team-best 26 points for the Heat on 9-of-12 shooting and is averaging 27.9 points on 51.8 percent shooting in his last eight games against New Orleans.

LeBron scores 36, Heat roll in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Two nights after having their streak snapped, LeBron James and the Miami Heat looked ready to start a new run.

James scored 36 points, hitting six consecutive 3-pointers in less than six minutes during the first half, and the Miami Heat rebounded from their first loss in nearly two months to beat the New Orleans Hornets 108-89 on Friday night.

The Heat, whose 27-game winning streak ended in Chicago on Wednesday, clinched the top seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs. James kept shooting 3-pointers after making his first one with 1:55 left in the first quarter, and he did not miss until he already had set a season high with his sixth.

"It was one of those nights, so I just kept it going," James said. "We had a three-on-one break and Mike passed to me, and I stopped for a 3. I hadn't done that probably since high school or the early years with Cleveland. I felt good. Just tried to keep the Heat wave going."

James finished with seven 3s - one shy of his career high - as the crowd at the New Orleans Arena cheered louder and louder after giving him a mixed reception before the game.

Dwyane Wade added 17 points and seven assists for the Heat. Norris Cole scored 12 points and Chris Bosh 10.

But James was the show after drawing fire for complaining about what he thought were a couple of unnecessarily hard fouls by Chicago. He shrugged off criticism from the Bulls' Taj Gibson and Boston general manager Danny Ainge, who said he should not have complained about the fouls on Wednesday, then slammed the door on the Hornets.

"To hear boos during the name announcements and then to turn the crowd around and make it almost like a home game is really humbling," he said. "It's unbelievable to be part of something like that."

After his fifth 3, which gave the Heat a 42-27 lead, he walked by himself along the side of the court, raising his arm over his head to ask for applause, which he received along with a smattering of boos.

"That was my appreciation," he said of his gesture. "I was letting them know I heard them."

Most of his 3s were face-up shots from a few feet behind the arc when no one challenged him, respecting his driving ability. The last was a pull-up from the side with no space, as if he wanted to find out exactly how hot he was.

Nothing but net.

He finally missed two in a row on the Heat's next possession, but they were leading 47-27 by then.

"I'm glad I was on the bench," said Wade, who sat out during James' torrid stretch. "I had a chance to watch the show. When any player gets going like that, it's phenomenal."

Ryan Anderson had 20 points off the bench for the Hornets. Eric Gordon scored 17, and Al-Farouq Aminu tied his career high with 16 rebounds.

James also hit a pair of jumpers during his hot streak, scoring a season-high 28 points in the first half as Miami went ahead 60-43. His teammates were nearly as hot. The Heat shot a season-best 69.7 percent for any half, hitting 23 of 33 shots, and their 60.9 percent for the game was their highest of the year, too, and the highest allowed by the Hornets.

Miami made 14 of 27 3-pointers.

Miami led by as many as 27 points in the second half, and New Orleans never came closer than the halftime margin of 17. James was content to distribute, throwing a perfect pass to Bosh for an alley-oop that capped a 10-2 run at the start of the third quarter.

"It's maturity," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The Hornets were up 11-9 when rookie Anthony Davis drove the baseline and lost the ball on the way up for what would have been an uncontested dunk. He was called for traveling when he retrieved it on the other side of the rim, and nothing went right for New Orleans the rest of the way.

Bosh banked in a shot unintentionally to tie the score at 11. Wade put the Heat ahead for good with two free throws. Ray Allen sank a turnaround jumper from the baseline. Bosh faked an outside shot and drove for an easy layup.

Miami, coming off the streak-busting loss to Chicago and getting ready to play at Western Conference-leading San Antonio on Sunday, already led 25-15 when James took over.

"We came out with the right mentality, very professional," Wade said. "It would have been easy to come out and just lay an egg tonight, but we came out with great intensity and focus."

New Orleans, playing without starting point guard Greivis Vasquez for the second time in three games, committed 19 turnovers. Rookie Brian Roberts had doubled his career high with 18 assists in place of Vasquez on Monday, but only five this time. Davis was in foul trouble early, scoring 11 points.

The only person in the building who wasn't awed by James' performance might have been Hornets coach Monty Williams. Asked if James reminded him of Michael Jordan, whom Williams faced as a player in the 1990s, Williams pointed to the Hornets' inexperience.

"Jordan played against men," Williams said. "LeBron plays against young boys. That's the difference."

NOTES: Heat point guard Mario Chalmers missed his first game of the season with a sprained right ankle, with Mike Miller replacing him in the starting lineup. "His (Chalmers') injury isn't a major concern right now, but his ankle is a bit swollen and we want to stay proactive and give him a rest tonight," Spoelstra said. "We'll evaluate him tomorrow." ... Vasquez tried to return against the Clippers on Wednesday but was ineffective, going scoreless and missing both of his shots while playing 28 minutes. ... The previous high shooting percentage for a Hornets opponent was .580 by Minnesota on Feb. 2.

THE FACTS: It took less than a half for the Miami Heat to get back on track after having their 27-game winning streak snapped.

LeBron James had 28 points in the first half on his way to a game-high 36 to pace the Heat to a 108-89 win over the New Orleans Hornets. James shot 65 percent from the field, including going 7-for-10 from 3-point range, and had six assists and four rebounds to pace Miami (57-15).

And with the win, Miami, for the first time since the 2004-05 season, clinched the No. 1 seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The mismatch was evident from midway through the first quarter until the final whistle. Miami, coming off its loss at Chicago on Wednesday, outclassed New Orleans (25-48) from both the paint and the outside. The Heat shot 60.9 percent from the floor and hit 14 3-pointers on the night.

For 6½ minutes, the Hornets looked like they had a chance, even taking an 11-9 lead. But the Heat took over and in a four-minute period that spanned the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter, James hit four consecutive 3-pointers that pushed Miami's lead from nine points to 15.

The Heat never led by less than 12 points again. Their next task will be to take on Western Conference-leading San Antonio in Texas on Sunday in what could be a preview of this season's Finals.

Ryan Anderson led New Orleans with 20 points while Al-Farouq Aminu grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. Anthony Davis added 11 points and five rebounds for the Hornets.

QUOTABLE: "(Michael) Jordan played against men. LeBron plays against young boys. That's the difference."

THE STAT: 19 -- That's the number of turnovers for the Hornets. New Orleans, the second-worst team record-wise in the Western Conference, couldn't afford to give away possessions to the league's hottest team. But by the fourth quarter, New Orleans already had four more turnovers than its season average of 14 and it wasn't done giving the ball away for the game.

TURNING POINT: For the first six minutes of the game, it appeared the Hornets would be able to push the Heat. And then Miami did what the league's best team does -- it went on a 13-2 run that broke open the contest. Miami trailed 11-9 before Chris Bosh hit a long jumper to tie the game. This stretch ended with two Udonis Haslem free throws. In between, the Hornets missed three shots and turned the ball over once.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm going to continue to be who I am on the floor and be who I am off the floor. At the end of the day, I'm here to win games and put our team in a position to win another championship."

HOT: In the first half, the Heat were 23-for-33. And while you may be thinking that's because James shot 71.4 percent, his teammates weren't exactly missing shots. Eight players who don't have James as their surname went 13-for-19 in the opening 24 minutes

NOT: New Orleans' Eric Gordon had a tough night, going just 3-for-11 from the field against the Heat and finished with 17 points thanks to going 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. But he was below his average field-goal percentage in the past four games when he shot 42.3 percent.

NOTABLE: The Heat outscored the Hornets 17-4 in fast-break points. ... Anderson led the Hornets in scoring despite coming off the bench for the 15th time this season. It was the 24th time he has led the team in scoring. ... Norris Cole helped off the bench for Miami, scoring 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting. ... New Orleans' Davis tied a career-high with four steals. Davis also had two blocked shots, giving him 101 for the season.
