The New York Knicks are 10-4 at home against Western Conference opponents and the Memphis Grizzlies are 10-4 on the road against the East.

That's not the only similarity ahead of Wednesday night's matchup at Madison Square Garden between teams that will likely be missing key big men as the Knicks try for a sixth straight victory.

New York (43-26) won 100-85 at Boston on Tuesday as Tyson Chandler missed his seventh consecutive game with a bulging disk.

Chandler did not rule himself out Wednesday, but said he would "most likely" miss the contest in order to get two more days off before the Knicks play again Friday.

"When I get on the basketball court, I'm going to play defense and rebound and look up, so that's kind of my problem area right now," said Chandler, averaging a team-best 11.0 rebounds. "It's not something that I'm really worried about for long periods."

Memphis (47-23) will be without Marc Gasol for a third straight game. Gasol, second on the team with 7.8 rebounds per game, is out indefinitely with an abdominal injury.

His loss is a major one for the Grizzlies, whose plus-3.8 rebound margin is the NBA's second-best mark.

Memphis will play for the first time since Monday's 107-94 loss at Washington while New York will try to improve to 10-6 in the second half of back-to-back games.

The lack of rest shouldn't prove detrimental for a Knicks team that averages 40.8 points from its bench for the league's second-best mark. That depth was evident as J.R. Smith scored 32 of the reserves' 47 points against the Celtics.

Smith felt the key to victory was New York's defense, which forced 20 turnovers that led to 17 points.

"We credit everything we do to our defense," Smith said. "When we get out and run, no one can really run with us."

Carmelo Anthony made 10 of 30 shots for 29 points for New York, which extended its lead atop the Atlantic Division to 2 1/2 games over Brooklyn.

"It's tough for a lot of teams to come here and win (but) we're playing for something," coach Mike Woodson said. "They're playing for something, too, and they're a little beat up, like we are. And I just thought tonight our defense set the tone early and it was a nice flow for 48 minutes."

The Knicks will now try for their first six-game win streak since beginning 6-0.

That perfect start ended with a 105-95 loss at Memphis on Nov. 16. It was a feisty contest that featured six technical fouls, including infractions on Woodson, Smith and Anthony.

The Grizzlies could be still smarting after allowing John Wall to score 47 points Monday. It's the most one player has scored against Memphis since Kevin Martin had 48 for Sacramento on Nov. 2, 2009.

"When somebody has it going like that, there's really nothing you can do. You just put a hand up and hope that he misses," said guard Mike Conley, who scored a team-high 23.

Memphis is trying to avoid its first five-game road slide since a six-game skid Nov. 15-Dec. 6, 2010.

Knicks hold off Grizzlies for 6th straight win

NEW YORK (AP) Look who has the NBA's longest winning streak now.

The New York Knicks, mired in a bad slump just two weeks ago, tied a season high with their sixth straight victory by holding off the Memphis Grizzlies, 108-101 on Wednesday night.

J.R. Smith scored 35 points, his second straight 30-point game, to help the Knicks withstand a furious rally.

"I started off establishing my game on the inside and moving on from there," said Smith, who shot 10 of 18 from the field and 12 of 13 from the free throw line. "Fortunately, I got a lot of calls, got to the free throw line and was making my free throws, except for one. My mom is going to kill me, but I'll take it."

Smith scored 32 points against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday.

Carmelo Anthony added 22 points and Iman Shumpert had 16 for the Knicks, who started the season 6-0 but had played around .500 ball for much of the time since. They took over the NBA's longest win streak after Miami's 27-game run ended with a 101-97 loss in Chicago.

After trailing by as many as 30 points early in the second half, the Grizzlies cut their deficit to 103-99 on Tony Allen's two free throws with 33 seconds left.

However, they got no closer as Raymond Felton, Smith and Anthony scored the game's next five points at the free throw line.

"Games happen in spurts," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "To win games by 30 going away isn't that easy sometimes."

With the Knicks leading 71-41 early in the second half, the Grizzlies went on a 29-13 run and cut their deficit to 84-70 on Jerryd Bayless' 3-pointer with 32 seconds left in the third quarter.

Two free throws by Smith gave the Knicks an 86-70 lead heading into the fourth.

After Smith opened the final quarter with a three-point play, the Grizzlies pulled within 89-79 with a 9-0 run, as Bayless scored all nine points.

Quincy Pondexter's jumper with 1:38 remaining cut the lead to five, but Jason Kidd hit a 3-pointer with 1:16 left to stall the comeback.

"In the second half we got a little lax," Shumpert said. "They started to feel good and then we got a little rattled and got into the referees. We know where we messed up."

Shumpert scored 13 of the Knicks' first 15 points. His 3-pointer with 8:13 left in the first quarter broke a 7-all tie and the Knicks led the rest of the game.

New York ended the first quarter on a 30-18 run, shooting 72.2 percent from the field (13-for-18) for the period to take a 37-25 lead. They increased their lead to 30 points in the second quarter, 69-39, on another 3-pointer by Shumpert with just 9 seconds left before settling for a 69-41 halftime lead.

"Obviously, it was a bad start, getting all the way down by 30 points," said Memphis coach Lionel Hollins. "I'm proud of our guys, the way that they showed character and fought back. We had to finally find a lineup that could both guard and score. We worked our way back, but we just didn't have any margin for error."

Shumpert connected on all six of his field goal attempts in the first half, including 4 of 4 on 3-pointers, while the Knicks shot 61 percent overall, including 11 of 21 (52 percent) from 3-point range.

"Early on, we recognized that they put a big man on me," Shumpert said. "I took that as disrespect. Once everybody saw me feeling good, the bucket got big for everybody."

Mike Conley led Memphis with 26 points and Bayless finished with 24. Allen had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Marc Gasol, who missed the previous two games with an abdominal tear, finished with 13 points.

"I felt I could play and could help my teammates," Gasol said. "That's the bottom line. Obviously we didn't win and that didn't make me feel any better. Like I said, if I can play, I will play. That's the way it's always been with me and hopefully that's how it's always going to be."

THE FACTS: Behind J.R. Smith's game-high 35 points and Carmelo Anthony's 22, the Knicks opened a three-game home-stand with their sixth straight win in a 108-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at Wednesday night Madison Square Garden.

After Memphis whittled a 30-point lead to four points in the closing seconds, the Knicks used a 5-0 run to reestablish control. Smith went 12-of-13 from the foul line and had his second consecutive 30-point night off the bench after going for 32 Tuesday night in Boston. His four 30-point games off the bench leads the NBA. Iman Shumpert added 16 points for the Knicks, all in the first half.

Mike Conley scored 26 points and Jerryd Bayless had 24 for Memphis (47-24), which lost for the third time in four games. Tony Allen added 18 points and Marc Gasol 13. Gasol had missed two games with an abdominal tear.

New York (44-26), which hasn't won the division since 1993-94, opened the night 2 ½ games ahead of the rival Nets for the Atlantic Division lead.

THE STAT: The Knicks went 13-for-31 (42 percent) from the arc, while Memphis shot just 6-for-21 (29 percent). Shumpert went 4-for-6 from deep, Smith was 3-for-7 and Steve Novak 3-for-8.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks raced out to a 37-25 first-quarter lead behind a combined 35 points from Anthony, Shumpert and Smith. They led by as many as 30 points in the second and third quarters.

QUOTABLE II: "We got the win here. It didn't look as good as theirs, but we still got it."

WHO'S HOT: Shumpert scored 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting in the first quarter and had 16 at the half on 6-for-6 shooting. He had only reached double-figures three times this season, with a season-high 20 coming March 14 against Denver.

WHO'S NOT: The Memphis forward duo of Zach Randolph and Tayshaun Prince managed just eight combined points on 3-for-8 shooting.

NOTABLE: The Knicks played without All-Star center Tyson Chandler (stiff neck) for an eighth straight game. He could play Friday against Charlotte. "He's still day to day," Woodson said. "If he comes in tomorrow and he's up to playing on Friday, then we'll play him."

NOTABLE II: Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire told SNY that he hopes to return from knee debridement in time for the start of the playoffs April 20. "Hopefully, I'll be back for the playoffs. We'll see," he said. "I have total faith that I return and be just as good as before." Said Woodson: "I don't know what the timetable is on Amar'e. If he's telling you that his rehab is going well, then that's a good sign."

NOTABLE III: Knicks center Marcus Camby was ejected in the third period upon receiving his second technical of the night.
