Clippers-Hornets Preview

The last time the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Hornets on the road, they weren't even located in New Orleans.

The suddenly surging Hornets would like to keep it that way.

After opening a four-game trip with another road defeat, the Clippers look to avoid a 10th straight road loss to the Hornets on Wednesday night.

Los Angeles (48-23) hasn't managed to beat the Hornets (25-46) on the road since Jan. 8, 2007, when they were temporarily playing in Oklahoma City following Hurricane Katrina. The Clippers have dropped 11 of 12 as the visitor in this series since their last win in New Orleans on April 20, 2005.

Los Angeles hasn't visited the Hornets since last March 22, when Chris Paul returned to New Orleans for the first time after spending his first six seasons as the Hornets' star point guard. He had 16 points and nine assists in a 97-90 loss.

Paul is averaging 22.0 points and 10.8 assists while helping the Clippers win three of four meetings since, but they've all been in Los Angeles. He had 10 points and 12 assists and was one of four starters that rested in the fourth quarter on Dec. 19, when the Clippers cruised to a 93-77 victory.

Duplicating that performance could be difficult considering Los Angeles has dropped three straight on the road, surrendering an average of 110.7 points and 51.7 percent shooting - 41.9 from beyond the arc.

Paul certainly did his part to try to end that slide Tuesday in Dallas, scoring 33 points on 12-of-15 shooting, but the Clippers fell 109-102 in overtime.

Production from Blake Griffin would surely help. The All-Star forward is averaging 10.7 points while shooting 31.3 percent over the past three games.

He's totaled 22 points while the Clippers have split two season meetings with the Hornets, including a career-low four points on 1 of 9 from the floor in a 105-98 defeat Nov. 26.

Unlike the Clippers, New Orleans enters this meeting with some momentum, winning three in a row for the first time since a season-high four-game run from Jan. 5-11.

While Los Angeles' defense has been virtually nonexistent during its road skid, the Hornets have stepped it up defensively during their winning streak, allowing an average of 85.0 points - 12.4 less than their season average.

The Hornets' latest performance may be their most impressive of the season, beating Denver 110-86 on Monday. They held the Nuggets to 37.9 percent from the field to end their franchise record-tying 15-game winning streak.

"We always talk about competing every single night, because you never know, to give yourself a chance," coach Monty Williams said. "I'm proud of the way we try to do things, and I'm also happy being a part of good stuff. That's who we are - we play hard, we defend - when the ball goes in, it's all the better."

Rookie Brian Roberts is looking to build on his stunning effort from Monday, when he had a career-high 18 assists with 13 points in just his second career start. He fell three assists shy of matching Paul's team record set in November 2007.

"I've had to grind and just fight to be on the team just to make an opportunity for myself," Roberts said. "It's something I know I don't take for granted."

Ryan Anderson had 23 points and nine rebounds against Denver, but averages 8.9 points in seven career games against the Clippers. He had seven on Dec. 19, while going 2 for 13 from the floor - missing all eight attempts from long range.

Griffin leads Clippers past Hornets, 105-91

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Chris Paul and Blake Griffin made their share of timely plays and otherwise enjoyed the perimeter shooting exhibition put on by the Los Angeles Clippers' supporting cast.

Even Chauncey Billups made a difference during the 13 minutes he tested his nagging right groin injury. It added up to the kind of comfortable victory the Clippers needed on the heels of an overtime loss at Dallas a night earlier.

Griffin scored 19 points, Paul had 16 points, nine assists and four steals, and the Clippers beat the New Orleans Hornets 105-91 on Wednesday night.

"With Blake rolling, and us spacing the court, if we make shots we're a tough team to play," Paul said. "It's a good bounce-back win for us, coming off an overtime loss, a tough game like that in Dallas."

Caron Butler and Jamal Crawford each scored 13 for the Clippers, who built a 13-point lead in the middle of the fourth quarter and thereafter had little trouble finishing off a victory that pulled them ahead of Denver for the third-best record (49-23) in the Western Conference.

"You should have seen last night on the plane and on the bus. Guys felt terrible," Crawford said. "Games like this couldn't come fast enough for us. We just wanted to get back on track."

Returning from a three-game absence, Billups added 11 points before sitting out most of the second half, again because of tightness in his groin.

"It was a little bit sore and I just want to be smart with it, see the big picture," Billups said. "It's frustrating being in and out like that, but I just want to try to get healthy because the only way I'm going to be able to help the team is if I'm healthy."

Eric Gordon scored 24 and Anthony Davis had 19 points and nine rebounds for New Orleans, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

"For the most part we forgot a bit about how we won these past three games: Defending, moving the ball and playing with a level of force that's necessary to have a chance," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "Even when we scored, they were hard scores."

The Clippers combined for 13 3-pointers on 29 attempts, with Billups and Crawford each hitting three.

Robin Lopez scored 13 for New Orleans, which outshot Los Angeles, 49.3 percent (35 of 71) to 46.6 percent (34 of 73). But New Orleans missed 10 of 14 from deep and turned the ball over 12 times, leading to 20 Clippers points.

"We kind of beat ourselves. We really didn't move the ball very well and we took tough shots," Hornets forward Ryan Anderson said. "We didn't really battle. We just didn't have it like we had the last couple of games."

Los Angeles led by 11 early in the third quarter after Willie Green hit a 3 and Griffin added a couple free throws, but Gordon and Davis helped the Hornets close the gap. Gordon had 12 points in the period, hitting a couple difficult driving floaters, one as he was fouled. Davis hit all five of his shots in the period, including several midrange jumpers.

Davis also converted a layup as he was fouled on a feed from Gordon, and Gordon's free throw cut the Clippers' lead to 79-77 heading into the fourth quarter.

Yet the Clippers soon were back up by 10 after Eric Bledsoe and Matt Barnes each hit 3s during an 8-0 run that made it 89-79.

"Our bench was amazing," Paul said. "That's very important, because down the stretch (the Hornets) tried to trap and tonight we were able to make them pay when we found Matt in the corner for the dagger."

The Clippers' lead grew to 98-85 after Griffin hit a short running hook and added a free throw with 4:27 left, and New Orleans did not threaten after that.

There were eight ties and 14 lead changes in a close first half in which neither team led by more than eight points. Lopez established himself early for New Orleans with 11 first-half points, mostly inside with a short baseline jumper mixed in.

New Orleans led 37-30 after Brian Roberts hit consecutive 3s. Then Paul, who had a quiet first quarter, started to get more involved.

He set up Billups' 3 for one of his five second-quarter assists and added and jumper and foul shot.

As the half came to a close, the Clippers made four straight 3s - two each by Butler and Billups - including one that Billups banked off the backboard. The shots resulted in a 12-3 run to close the quarter, putting Los Angeles ahead 56-48 at halftime.

NOTES: DeAndre Jordan had 11 rebounds to go with a fast-break alley-oop jam on a lob from Paul. ... The fans in courtside seats included Davis' college coach, Kentucky's John Calipari, as well as actress Lori Loughlin and Saints head coach Sean Payton. ... The Clippers continue their road trip Friday at San Antonio. ... The Hornets continue their home stand Friday against Miami, which saw its 27-game winning streak end Wednesday night in Chicago.

THE FACTS: The Los Angeles Clippers outlasted the New Orleans Hornets 105-91 Wednesday night, getting back on track a night after losing to Dallas. Chris Paul had 16 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals in his return to the city where he got his NBA start. He was helped by Blake Griffin's 19 points and Jamal Crawford's 13.

The Hornets (25-47) nearly won every statistical category that matters, shooting 49.3 percent to Los Angele's 46 percent while outscoring the Clippers (49-23) in the paint by 12. The Hornets had as many rebounds as the Clippers did, too. But it was Los Angeles' prowess from the outside that made the difference; the Clippers were 13-for-29 from 3-point range.

Los Angeles, fresh off of an overtime defeat in Texas, allowed New Orleans to hang around through three quarters. In the final frame, however, Los Angeles finished strong thanks to a big presence inside. The Clippers scored eight second-chance points on four offensive rebounds and got to the free-throw line for 10 shots, all of which helped them win the quarter 26-14.

Eric Gordon led the Hornets with 24 points while Anthony Davis pitched in 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Clippers now continue their voyage through the Southwest division, heading to San Antonio for a Friday showdown. Los Angeles sits only 1/2 game ahead of Denver for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. New Orleans must contend with a Miami Heat team that lost Wednesday night for the first time in 28 games.

THE STAT: 28.6. That was New Orleans' 3-point percentage. On a night in which Los Angeles drained 13 treys, the Hornets had no answer, going just 4-for-14 from long range. The Hornets were close in every other major statistical category, helping them stick close through 36 minutes. But they couldn't match from long range. While the Hornets didn't hit a 3-pointer in the fourth, Los Angeles hit three.

TURNING POINT: The Hornets were within 81-79 with 11:14 to go in the fourth quarter after a Ryan Anderson tip-in. And then Los Angeles went on a run. Starting with an Eric Bledsoe 3-pointer, the Clippers rolled off a 14-4 run that all but put the Hornets down for good.

QUOTABLE II: "We just played a playoff team that knows how to play. I thought they pushed us a little bit tonight. I didn't see a physical presence in the paint. I thought our guys didn't back down but didn't match that and try to exceed it."

HOT: New Orleans' Davis was quiet in the first half, going 2-for-5 for only 5 points, as he played in front of his college coach John Calipari. But in the third quarter, the Rookie of the Year candidate went 5-for-5 for 10 points.

GOOD MOVE: The Clippers held the Hornets' Greivis Vasquez scoreless by allowing Paul to get inside the third-year player's head. Slowed by an ankle injury, the Clippers trapped Vasquez and Paul harried and harassed him into three turnovers and five fouls.

NOTABLE: Los Angeles won in New Orleans for the first time since Jan. 8, 2007, a span of nine games. ... For the first time this season, no Hornet recorded at least five assists. ... New Orleans' Anderson didn't hit a 3-pointer for only the fifth time in 73 games. ... The Clippers own a 2-1 advantage in the season series. They'll be back in New Orleans on April 12.
