Nuggets-Spurs Preview

Given their recent play without starting point guard Ty Lawson, coach George Karl wasn't surprised that the Denver Nuggets' lengthy winning streak came to end.

Getting back on track likely won't be any easier when Denver visits a San Antonio Spurs team that's seeking a sixth consecutive home victory Wednesday night.

Lawson has missed the last three games with a right heel injury and it's uncertain when he'll return. The Nuggets (49-23) have struggled against sub-.500 competition without him, slipping past Philadelphia and Sacramento by a combined seven points before losing 110-86 at New Orleans on Monday.

The defeat ended a team record-tying 15-game winning streak, and Lawson's absence was clearly a big factor.

"He's important to us because he makes everyone else fit," Karl said. "These last three games we were thinking we are better than we are. It's human nature."

Danilo Gallinari had 24 points Monday, but he's shot 32 percent over his last nine games. Andre Miller has been starting in Lawson's place and scored nine for Denver, which was held to its lowest point total since an 81-72 loss to Memphis on Dec. 29.

"We were constantly taking the ball out of the basket and getting frustrated," Miller said. "They outplayed us and outworked us at both ends."

While Denver has been awaiting the return of its point guard, Tony Parker has thrived for the Spurs in his two games back after missing the previous eight with a sprained left ankle.

Parker scored 22 points in a 104-97 overtime win over Utah on Friday and had 23 in a 96-95 loss at Houston on Sunday.

"Tony's fine, feels good," coach Gregg Popovich said. "He probably gets a little winded still but he's playing well."

Parker scored a season-high 12 fourth-quarter points against the Rockets as the Spurs' comeback fell just short.

"TP is getting his rhythm back," Tim Duncan said. "He's feeling good and obviously, he's our attack guy on the floor and he is the guy we go through in the fourth quarter. He made some plays to get us back in the game and gave us a chance to win it."

San Antonio (53-17), which leads Oklahoma City by 1 1/2 games in the race for the top seed in the Western Conference, had its four-game winning streak snapped.

"The last few games have been pretty good," Popovich said. "I thought we worked hard, executed pretty well, (but) you can't turn it over 18 times on the road."

The Spurs, winners of five straight at home, follow this contest by hosting the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday before Sunday's showdown with league-best Miami, which is riding a 27-game winning streak.

"You have to take it game by game," Duncan said. "I don't think anyone goes into any streak thinking they're going to win 20-some in a row. It kind of builds and you start feeling good about yourself. It'll be a great game (versus Miami)."

The Spurs have won four of the last five meetings with the Nuggets in San Antonio.

Duncan finished with 31 points and 18 rebounds but Gallinari scored 28 in Denver's 112-106 home victory in the most recent matchup Dec. 18.

Duncan, Spurs escape with 100-99 win over Nuggets

SAN ANTONIO (AP) San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich treats the stretch run of the regular season like a series of final exams for his team.

The Spurs passed their latest - just barely.

Tim Duncan had 23 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks and the San Antonio Spurs escaped with a 100-99 win over Denver on Wednesday night when Nuggets veteran guard Andre Miller missed a short jumper at the buzzer.

"The schedule that we have is something that should be embraced and considered a great opportunity," Popovich said, "because it's like taking a final exam every day or most days. To get ready for the playoffs, understanding the physicality, aggressiveness and competitiveness that's necessary night after night in the playoffs."

Denver dished out a heavy dose of that playoff intensity.

Danny Green added 20 points and Tony Parker had 18 points and 11 assists for the Spurs, who remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Oklahoma City in the race for the top spot in the Western Conference. Kawhi Leonard had 11 points and Tiago Splitter 10.

JaVale McGee had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Wilson Chandler scored 15 points and Miller 14 for the Nuggets, whose reserves outscored their Spurs counterparts 59-18. Kenneth Faried and Danilo Gallinari added 12 points apiece and Andre Igoudala had 10.

San Antonio's starting five all scored in double figures, averaging 16.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists to counter Denver's bench and escape with its sixth straight home victory in a game that had 20 lead changes.

"I'm pretty sure the film will show it was a good loss, maybe the best loss of the year," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "We did a lot of great stuff. We had to fight a lot of things and overcome not shooting the ball well. I think we know we can play better but I thought the heart of the game was pretty first class."

Denver outscored San Antonio 24-17 in the fourth quarter, including a 6-3 run in the final two minutes.

Duncan missed an 18-foot jumper with 10.2 seconds left, setting up Miller's driving attempt that bounced off the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Green was able to close on Gallinari, who was forced to give up the ball to Miller behind the 3-point line. Miller drove into the paint on Parker, but was unable to make the off-balance runner.

"I think we gave it a good shot," Karl said. "I've seen Andre make that shot a hundred times, but I'm not disappointed. I would've rather had Gallinari, probably in the attack. We knew they were probably going to switch our stuff. When he hesitated, it took enough time off the clock where Andre didn't have much of anything to do but attack aggressively and get us a good shot."

The Spurs (54-17) pulled within two games of Miami (56-15) in the loss column for the league's best record. The Heat lost 101-97 at Chicago, snapping their 27-game winning streak.

San Antonio's final 15 games feature matchups against 11 playoff teams, including its next two against the Los Angeles Clippers (Friday) and Miami (Sunday).

"It's a great win to start this homestand here," Duncan said. "We've got some really tough games this part of the schedule down the stretch here. It's going to be tough for us, so we need to win everyone we can get."

San Antonio escaped a minor scare when Parker sprained his right middle finger late in the third quarter, but returned to score four points in the fourth.

"I had no feeling in my finger so I just wanted to make sure it was not broken," said Parker, who will have X-rays Thursday morning. "They don't think it's broken."

Continuing the momentum they captured late in the first half, the Spurs outscored Denver 32-21 during a third quarter in which they shot 3 for 3 from 3-point range. The Nuggets failed to score any fast-break points in the third and were 9 for 23 in the quarter.

"It was a great test for our defense and for our offense when you play a team like that," Parker said. "They pack it in the paint really good. They stopped my penetrations, Manu's penetrations. So we had to make shots and trust each other. It was a great playoff intensity."

NOTES: It was Duncan's fifth game of at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks this season. .... The Spurs are 64-19 all-time at home against the Nuggets. ... The Spurs' Australian contingent - G Patty Mills and C Aron Baynes - were both on the inactive list. ... Nuggets G Julyan Stone (knee) sat out with an injury. Stone has been inactive 61 times this season and had seven did not play-coach's decision. ... Parker gave Duncan an inquisitive look when the All-Star power forward opted to toss a three-quarters court pass to Leonard off a rebound rather than give it to the point. Duncan's pass sailed untouched out of bounds as Parker stared dumbfounded, before smiling and shaking his head. ... Former Spurs center David Robinson received a huge ovation when he appeared on the large television displays as the team honored those in attendance who had served in the Armed Forces.

THE FACTS: The Denver Nuggets' long winning streak has turned into a losing streak after Tim Duncan scored 23 points with 14 rebounds and San Antonio dominated the 3-point line in the Spurs' 100-99 victory on Wednesday at AT&T Center.

Even though the Spurs finished 10-for-15 from 3-point distance and the Nuggets failed to hit a 3-pointer, Denver still had a chance to win. After Duncan missed an open jump shot with 10 seconds to go, the Nuggets set up after a timeout and got a driving three-footer from Andre Miller. But his contested left-handed shot bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

The Nuggets, who have lost consecutive games after running off 15 wins in a row, got a 21-point, 11-rebound night in 26 minutes off the bench from JaVale McGee. He shot 10-for-11 with five of his rebounds on offense and had three blocks.

QUOTABLE: "It was huge (to beat Denver tonight) because we've got a lot of tough games. The Clippers, Miami and Memphis (are next on the schedule), so we need to take care of our homecourt advantage."

THE STAT: On a night when Denver again controlled the paint (the Nuggets led 68-36 in the lane) and was successful running the floor (16-9 advantage on the fastbreak), the Nuggets were outscored 30-0 from the 3-point line. For all the things the Nuggets do well on offense (third in the league in scoring), they are 24th in 3-point shooting percentage.

TURNING POINT: Manu Ginobili was struggling through another sub-par shooting performance when he entered the final two minutes of the game shooting 3-for-8 from the floor. But he was left open near the top of the key with a minute and a half to go when Kawhi Leonard drove the lane, and when Leonard kicked the ball back out Ginobili quickly put the ball in the air. He knocked it down and San Antonio was up by five with 1:26 to go. It was the last points San Antonio scored, and the Spurs held on despite Danilo Gallinari's four free throws in the final 1:10.

QUOTABLE II: "I've seen Andre (Miller) make that shot (at the final buzzer) a hundred times. But I'm not disappointed. When Gallinari hesitated (before passing to Miller) it took enough time off the clock where Andre didn't have much anything to do but attack aggressively."

HOT: The Spurs just missed five of their 15 tries from the 3-point line, and Danny Green led the team with 6-for-8 shooting on 3-pointers. It's another sign of his streakiness. In the past three games he's gone 11-for-20 on 3-pointers. But in the two games before that Green was 1-for-6. Tonight, in fact, Green hit all of those 3-pointers in the first half (a franchise record for one half) and got only one try from the 3-point line after halftime.

NOT: Ty Lawson had trouble in his first game back since missing the last three games with a heel contusion. A 46-percent shooter from the floor this season, Lawson went 1-for-7 tonight in 19 ½ minutes.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: McGee's 21 points are a season high, and his 10-for-11 night was his best since going 9-for-9 while scoring his previous season-high of 20 points in December at Indiana.

ROOKIE WATCH: By playing an average of 10 minutes in the two games since Parker's return from injury, it looked like Nando De Colo was taking the role as backup point guard for the Spurs. But he did not play tonight while Cory Joseph was given 12 ½ minutes (five points, one assist, no turnovers) off the bench behind Parker (18 points, 11 assists).

NOTABLE: San Antonio struggled through 4-for-17 shooting in the fourth quarter, but the Spurs survived by hitting 8-for-11 from the foul line (Denver hit four foul shots in the fourth). ... Nuggets coach George Karl was called for a technical by Bennett Salvatore when Kenneth Faried was called for a shooting foul on Tiago Splitter with Denver leading by one with eight minutes to go. ... Parker sprained his right middle finger (shooting hand) on a layup try in the third quarter and went to the locker room to get attention from the team's training staff, but he quickly returned. ... Ginobili's streak of shooting less than 50 percent from the floor is now at nine games; he was 4-for-9 tonight. ... Spurs shooting guard Gary Neal, who has been battling a tight calf muscle and plantar fasciitis much of this season, missed his fourth-straight game.
